Panic ensued at John F. Kennedy Airport after a passenger told police she saw a man with a gun at Terminal 8, leading to massive evacuation.

The woman told an officer about the alleged gunman a little after 9:30 p.m., leading to a massive law enforcement hunt for the armed man.

The thread has been removed. Hmmm.

I think it was a satire article Tulessa. At least that's what I read before thread shut down.

In a crowded airport, I would think many people would hear and "see" and something like this (like compared to the mall (compartments). There has not been a desription of someone - I think it was one of those thunderclaps - which are intense!

Whether or not shots were fired, people are really on edge. Regarding the mall incident yesterday, I watched a video of the sound and to me it didn't sound like gunfire at all - more like something large falling over and hitting the floor. But I understand in today's world how it would seem like gunfire. We have such a tremendous ability to communicate - one person's idea can become "fact" and acted upon by a large number of people, and in a very short period of time. In many cases that is a good thing, but it can also be a bad thing when it causes panic and overreactions. But what we can do? We have to take things seriously, because bad things like this really do happen. Such a shame.

I agree, at the same level I think we need some middle ground - dont know how -but we cant keep disrupting our society for loud noises!!

I know nothing about guns - so when I heard mall yesterday I could not really tell.

I've been around guns my whole life but I'm certainly not an expert.

I don't know how we find middle ground either - the more we know of incidents around the country, the more alert and on edge we are. It's going from a "that can't happen to me or anyone I know" kind of thing to people realizing it really can happen to them.

I think my concern is now all someone has to do is call something in and in reality the mass shooters and terrorists kinda win -- for the pure terrorists (as opposed to mass shooters) imo, that is what they want more than anything is disrupt our society.

So now in the last 24 hours fear there are just gonna pick up on that idea, and start calling nothing in, I dont know an answer

or some bored teens

Thank God! I wonder what it was? Possibly what CARIIS stated, a large thunderclap?
I will be anxiously awaiting to hear what it was, since people reported seeing someone with a gun.

Thank you greg ~

BBM - That's the same thing that happened at the mall yesterday. I swear people make stuff up in their head to go along with the current story. Either that, or they see things that aren't really there. how many times have we seen that happen her on WS? we see things in pictures that aren't really there - our minds are powerful when it comes to suggestion!!

Maybe a middle ground could be of course LE responds, but dont go into evalcuation mode instantly.

Think about it - a mass shooter or terrorist is not going to shoot a couple of shots, and then stop --they are going to do it the way we have seen it happen - it starts and continues and is clearly real and horrid.

IMO the evacuating has to be slowed down, maybe not the first reaction??

I dont know

I have concerns that this stuff is going to get like hurricanes - at the beginning of every season the media goes nuts - but then people get dessntized

The cry wolf deal is real - we are animals - we do get less responsive .

Kinda like that idea - arrive access - evacuate

And yesterday at mall the whole time I am thinking gosh robbers are gonna get an idea , call in a shots fired, wait until an entire police dept goes to site, anc cruise around robbing banks or whatever

If we go with the notion that an area needs XX number of cops - that does not evaperate or change.

I am just saying resource wise we are not going to be able to handle two false alarms per day everywhere - so maybe a recodnsideration of the first "action" on arrival .

Frankly, in the real events citizens do not need to be told to "run" or get out - comes naturally fight flite stuff

I cant really come up with an event where there was a stop and start, so when LE gets there and do not get direct reports and people down hold back on mass evacuations.

Cops can change outcomes when it is ongoing- but the intial time before they get there will be normal human being bahaviors

maybe just a adjustment - the mall was a mess, now airliners are gonna be a mess for 24 hours , plus the system up there was already cascading in troubles due to weather

just moo

One of the officials said cheering, clapping and banging from people watching the Olympic Games may have been misinterpreted as a fight and gunshots. The initial alarm spread through Terminal 8 and to Terminal 1, the official said.

"There are no reported injuries or arrests at this time," the agency said. "Preliminary investigation does not indicate shots were fired at JFK."
