Slept off and on all day and Tylenol took care of what little pain I have and very little bleeding. I'm amazed I feel so good

This is so disturbing about this Louisiana shooting case. What is going on, so it's all about being a "lone wolf" , modeling himself after ISIS ? And was a member of the Tea Party yet admired Hitler and the Nazis? This guy was a total psycho, good riddance. What a tragedy he had a chance to take out others before himself.

Piddling away at catching up with some odds and ends this week. Heading back outside to put a coat of primer on a project. Hope everyone is doing well. Stay cool!

I have had the most stressful week in a while and haven't slept. I learned that I really need to go with my gut instincts. I have posted about this unthread.

It all started with having my driveway sealed. A nice young man was driving around my development and saw me and asked if I needed it sealed. Yes. He left a flyer that said he did pressure washing so I hired him for that, however he didn't have a powerful enough pressure washer, so he had a friend who did, help. That young man was very nice, did construction, and I hired him to clean my gutters.

When he power washed, the 25 yo wood just disintegrated and the gutter was hanging off the fascia. This young man gave me a price for his labor to fix the gutter as I bought all the materials.

OMG story short, he underestimated the scope of work and overestimated his abilities. I was trying to be kind and give him work. Well that bit me in the ass. I paid upfront for the labor and he came everyday this week with his fiancé to work on the back of the house. Yesterday, he decided he needed to charge me $2800 more to finish the whole house. This is after he had to leave early to get his truck starter fixed, my gutter is laying on the grass and the soffits are off and that area exposed. I have already paid $1000 in labor and he was no where close to being done. He wanted another $600 to finish just the back.

I told him I didn't have any more cash and boom, he decided he wasn't coming back. I am not a cash cow and I am blown away at how kindness is mistaken for weakness. All the metaphors at work here. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth. No good deed goes unpunished. Etc etc etc.

I will never pay for work upfront again, despite the down on their luck story. Did I get my $1000 worth of work done? No. Only about $525.00 worth. Did I learn a lesson? Yes. Never again.

There is such a thing as being noble. He could have come and finished what he started. It is not my problem he lives an hour away, has to pay tolls, his starter went, had to pay a second person to go up on the ladder, has to be home by 4 to pick up his daughter, has no money, is behind on his rent, took on a way bigger job than expected that he couldn't handle.

Do you all have any words of wisdom for me as he is coming back tomorrow to pick up his equipment? What do I say?

If he hasn't done the work that you paid for - I believe you can keep his equipment until that work is done!!!! :gaah: Yeah - don't trust people that come around to your door and say they can do this and this and that.... most of them don't even have contract licenses!!

I don't know about the guy trying to make a dinosaur... crazy if you ask me! What is he going to do - keep it on an island - didn't seem to work in the movies!!

On the Holmes trial - delayed until Monday, as one of the jurors has a sinus infection... :waiting:

Do you have a shed you can padlock and store his equipment in? Or your garage? Then tell him you want all your money back if he wants his equipment, or he has the choice to finish the work, if you trust him to do that. Unfortunately if he's a total con and dishonest, the first chance he got he'd load up his stuff and you'd never see him again anyway. Sorry this happened to you Zuri, few people are trustworthy these days. (((hugs)))

So sorry you've had to go through this.

One thing I would mention up front is that power washing in itself is something that can easily go awry if not done by someone with proper experience. It seems like perhaps he was overzealous, as in, "Sure, I can do this in no time and make some quick money." Too much water pressure (which he may have used in his haste to get the job done) can do more harm than good on a structure where wood is involved, and might have exacerbated the damage to the fascia, gutters, etc.

The second thing -- and maybe this is just me being hyper-vigilant -- I would hold his equipment ransom. Do you have a garage? Can you (or someone more physically able) get the stuff in there?

I would look at it as something akin to a Mechanic's Lien; he agreed to do the work for xxx amount of money, and until he fulfills his part of the verbal contract, he can't have his stuff back. It also helps to reference an attorney (whether real or implied). Those sorts can be easily intimidated by legal threats. Also, rest assured that HE will not be hiring an attorney, so you definitely have the upper hand, even if just psychologically.

I, too, have had experiences where people have mistaken my kindness as being stupidity/ignorance. They back down pretty quickly when they see the not-so-nice side of me. It does cause some anxiety and psychic pain, but I far prefer that to feeling used. JMO


p.s. There was a guy who used to come around offering to clean my gutters. He was kinda sleazy (yeah, should have trusted my gut), but the price was good, so I said, "OK." After the first time, he asked if he could store his ladder under my house. Again, I agreed. Later, I found out he had stolen the ladder from one of my neighbors! I felt terrible -- even complicit -- and very, very angry!

Months later, I noticed he was working on a crew doing tree-work on the house across the street. Once I realized it was him, I stormed out of my house to confront him, and to make his new "employer" aware of how sketchy he was.

As soon as he saw me coming HE RAN AWAY!!!! That was at least 10 years ago and I haven't seen him around here since.

My wolf pup lady got a hold of me this morning, OMG, she has a gorgeous female (Alaskan and BC wolf) who she intends to breed towards the first of the year to a stud who is a half brother to my Poquita. They (Poquita and the male) share the same father, a 150 lb. Mal, Timber, Arctic cross out of the "White Fang" wolf dog.

By then, Ontos will be going on 10, and Poquita will be into her 5th year. And both will be able to help with the learning curve. I swear, WD pups have been the easiest pups to house train. 2 and 1 weeks, with just the random accident............and I had told myself Poquita would be the last pup of anything EVER!!!

The pony was a "project", passed on him. He'd been in a stall so the owner could "catch him". Not a good thing. So he's basically spent his life in a "box" for most of his 8 years, other than being chased/terrorized the few times she ever let him out to play in a pasture. Heck, I'd run away too, if I was going to be shoved back in a stall and ignored for all but feeding, haltered getting my hooves trimmed and shots from the vet.
That all kind of adds up to:
1. Halters are evil.
2. Stalls are evil.
3. Run away from people <-----(does he think they're evil too?) when you get the opportunity so you avoid #1 and 2.

Have Zuri pretty solid with her halter training. Bathing, spraying her with fly spray, picking up and cleaning her hooves, easy. Can slip her halter on, no problem. Have "played" with her in the round pen, no serious teaching sessions, just letting her know the round pen isn't "scary". We've been playing follow the leader, seriously, she thinks there is this invisible thread between me and her, and she just follows on my side. Responds when I call her. Stands, leads, turns.
And this is probably nonsense to any non-horses people!!!! Just kind of yacking away, lol!

I have been so stressed out I have now lost speech so bear with me. This is like what stroke patients get with aphasia and I just can't imagine being this way permanently. My DH actually left the office early as he was concerned at how bad I have gotten. Wonders never cease.

Thank you for the ideas about keeping the pressure washer and filing a mechanics lean. I hope it doesn't come to that. My DH is really good with people and I think he can rationally explain our position. What is frustrating is that I used to be able to without an issue. Oh well.

I slept until 10:30 this morning which was heavenly as the stress level went from 60 to 35 mpsh (miles per stress hour). The dogs like to ride in the car to Dunkin Donuts with me as I get cheese for them from there. I LOVE my Dunkin Donuts people and I always make sure to take cRe of them when I am there by tipping well/extra as my order is always ready when I hit the door.

Bella, the insecure rescue Manchester Terrier, usually will ride in the front and Zuri and Chayton ride in the back as they are big shepherds and there is more room. Well today, Zuri sat up front and Bella and Chayton were in the back. Bella will pick on Chayton sometimes and he doesn't trust her. The next thing I know, Chayton is climbing into the front seat with Zuri. So I have 2 huge shepherds in one passenger seat with their heads out the window. I had to lol.

When I stopped, I told Zuri to get in the back which she did and Chayton stayed up front. I swear, it is like having to separate children in the car all over again!

Glad to hear you got some stress relief. I've never hired a worker from off the street. Guess you learned a hard lesson, but as long as your house finally gets fixed in the end, all will be right. Yeah, I'd hold this guys' tools hostage or it sounds like he will keep gouging you for more money. I can't figure out if he's incompetent or a scam artist. Either way, next time use only licensed contractors. Home Depot contracts out guys like the ones that installed our doors. He had his own construction company and Home Depot farms him out work.

I am not sure I would even squabble over keeping his tools (though that is a good idea, if you are up to it. It could become even more stressful, though). Your health is the first thing to consider. Adrenal dysfunction can be devastating and take a long time to get through. Maybe your husband will be able to settle this one.

As for using TapaTalk ... I would like your opinion as to how it works. out for you. I am getting frustrated with getting this thread to open. I don't have the same problem on other threads.

I just called the non Emergency 911 number to see what recourse I have. I can't hold his pressure washer hostage and would have to take him to civil court. My DH is going to ask for the $500 back that was given to him to purchase material. I am sure it is spent. I just hate that I was so trusting and stupid. So, I will have to go to civil court and get a judgement against him. Great

Spellbound, there are no ads and I haven't had any issues with refreshing, loading etc. It looks different from what we are used to, but I am a whole lot less frustrated.

Oh Zuri, you needed a contract. Even if it's doing a favor. Did you pay him by the hour or by the job? If he low balled himself, you want it to be a learning lesson for him, but it bites you in the butt , and feel at some point you're being held hostage.

We had our bedroom and bathroom redid after a seventy year old pipe started leaking into my closet for who knows how long, and I hated the people that did the work. And we had a contract. And I was pissed at dh for showing the first guy that showed up the work, shook on it and came and told me. I asked dh, in front of the guy, if he had him sign a contract, the guy said no, I asked if there was a drop dead date, and was told nope it can take a while to get er done, but they'd try to have it done in three weeks. So the siege began.

The first guy that showed up was the "foreman" who told me to not be afraid of the man who would show up to bust up the old bathroom tile with a large sledgehammer, he was OK and the pockmarks on his face were from a shotgun blast that his ex wife unloaded upon him. And they did sew his arm back on. My first thought was of dh and a few cuss words. We had to move out of our end of the house and slept on a real mattress on the floor for over two months. They had to tear up the hardwood floors in my bedroom to repair the wall. You could see the ground underneath between the piers and floor joist. Things could crawl in and out if they wanted. It stayed like that for over a month.

I had a disagreement (surprise surprise) over a definition of what work was to be done, and called State Farm who sent the engineer that did that did the estimate of damage back out, and went over what was wrong (like the floor was not level like before) and how to correct it. One beam in the foundation had shifted and they needed to replace the floor joist like it was planned and paid for and adjust them. They put crime scene tape across our hall and told us it wasn't safe if we went in there. We went in there and took pictures. Not only were we not getting new plywood sub flooring that paid for, they had pieced together old sub flooring, and didn't take out the bathtub to have it refinished, but sprayed some epoxy that started flaking off a year later.

One day two sixteen year old boys showed up and sat under the house hammering for several hours. Later dh took a look and they had hammered nails all over the wood beam and nothing else. The floor and bathroom "got done" and we moved on to the laying the new floor and wall tile and why we can't have the old soap dish built into the wall, along with the toilet paper holder like we did because they don't make them any more. I called BS but it was too late. Then they installed the shower and the faucets and the shower head were off centered and out of alignment. They told me I couldn't get the same style of toilet to match the new pedestal sink, which is why I picked that sink because it had a matching style toilet.

In this dh and I went to lunch and a movie one Sunday afternoon and he had food poisoning, so I'm taking him to the er at three in the morning, hoping I can get back before the crew showed up, and they started painting and finishing up and thought they were done. But I told dh he needed to talk to his little buddy and tell him I was holding his last twenty thousand and wasn't going to hand it over. Little buddy asked me what would do the deal to make me happy. I told him I wasn't happy and wasn't going to be happy but until the hump was gone. So the State Farm engineer comes back and tells them to put an eight foot four x four between the ceiling and floor joist and leave for a few days hoping the top force will force it down. It did a little but I was over and done and wanted them gone and didn't shake the man's hand when he offered it after I handed him the rest of his money.


OH, did I tell you we had to go to a motel room to take bath for over a month?

I just called the non Emergency 911 number to see what recourse I have. I can't hold his pressure washer hostage and would have to take him to civil court. My DH is going to ask for the $500 back that was given to him to purchase material. I am sure it is spent. I just hate that I was so trusting and stupid. So, I will have to go to civil court and get a judgement against him. Great

Not to belabor the point, but if I read this correctly... If you hold his pressure washer hostage (and it IS on your property, correct?), then HE would have to take YOU to court. I think the police were being overly cautious with their advice. And, they're law enforcement, not lawyers. I do believe that a lawyer would give you a very different understanding of what your options are.

I truly doubt that this guy has the kind of time or money to butt heads with you. Again, just the THREAT of a lawyer is often enough to make these types back off.... I'm also fairly certain he won't call in police... Just saying...

That said, please don't beat yourself up about this incident. He's already done enough damage; don't allow him to cause further mental distress to add to it. We've all been through these kind of ordeals. In the grand scheme of things it matters little. A few years from now, it will be a barely perceptible blip on the radar of your life. Please bear that in mind.

I know down here they can get a mechanics lien, and that could expose Zuri to having a lien on her home and he could make her jump through hoops to satisfied the lien. So it might be best to just let him have it, tell him what you think of his honestly and work effort as nice as you can, an be glad to get rid of him. Then you find a good contractor that won't contract the job out. If the young man is just starting out and leaving flyers, I'd try to leave a review at his website to warn others.
