Did I ever tell you I saw DeeDee after she died? She walked through my bedroom , I could see through her! see now Knox is up there romping around, free of pain, living in beauty. Zuri I believe..(((hugs))).:HHJP:

My dear Nore, thank you for your words. I too want Knox's ashes, my Devon Horse Show blue ribbon and the ashes of my beloved dogs past and present to be with me. I believe too that we are reunited as the connections are so deep. You are loved and I hope you are doing better from that last scare. Xo

I want to share with you some of the miracles that have been happening within the last week. I am certain I have heavenly Angels surrounding me as well as Earthly Angels as in all of you. I have always thought that when a door closes, a window opens. I also believe that we are like chess pieces, that whatever you call your Higher Power is controlling, and are constantly moving in directions we are unaware of for some as yet to be revealed purpose. Some of this will be hard to write so they will come forth in different posts.

Miracles can and do happen.

Shonda Walter, a 36-year-old Black woman on Pennsylvania’s death row

"Shonda Walter is one of two women who currently sits on Pennsylvania’s death row. Pennsylvania has two women’s prisons, Muncy and Cambridge Springs..

The question of how Shonda Walter’s ended up on death row may be the final nail in the coffin of the death penalty in the United States. Shonda Walter’s story hinges on the State-allotted destiny for young, low and no-income, Black women.

Shonda Walter was tried and convicted for murder. At the time of the murder, Shonda Walter was in her early 20s. At her first trial, Shonda Walter’s lawyers were a hot mess. They freely conceded her guilt to the jury, and they never presented her, or the jury, with any options or explanations. In her appeal, the judge described her attorney as “unintelligible.” The Pennsylvania appeals court found that Shonda Walter had indeed had terrible representation, and then went on to uphold the conviction and sentence....

Shonda Walter has new attorneys who have filed a brief with the Supreme Court. Her attorneys argue that the ordinariness, the typicality, of Shonda Walter’s case, or pre-ordained fate, means the death penalty is unconstitutional. The adjudication of death sentences is capricious, arbitrary, and bears more than a `taint of racism.’..."

Could One of These Cases Spell the End of the Death Penalty?
Abolitionists seek the perfect case for a Supreme Court challenge.

"Last June, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer suggested that the death penalty might be close to its ultimate demise. “Rather than try to patch up the death penalty’s legal wounds one at a time,” he wrote in a dissent to Glossip v. Gross, to which Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg added her name, “I would ask for a full briefing on a more basic question: whether the death penalty violates the Constitution.”...

On Friday, the high court will discuss whether to hear a challenge to the death sentence of a Pennsylvania woman named Shonda Walter. Her case is one of several posed as direct responses to Breyer’s invitation to attack the death penalty head-on...

Shonda Walter, whose case will be discussed in a conference of the judges on Friday, was convicted in 2005 of killing 83-year-old James Sementelli with a hatchet in the small, central Pennsylvania town of Lock Haven. She was 24 years old. Walter’s current defense team argues that her trial was unfair in part because her trial lawyer openly conceded her guilt to the jury (she tried to have a new lawyer appointed, but the judge refused). In an appeal, the trial lawyer made arguments that one judge described as “unintelligible.” Her new lawyers argue that Walter “emerged from an arbitrary process which fails to limit the death penalty to the worst offenders.”...

Supreme Court Faces Decisions On Where To Go Next With The Death Penalty

"WASHINGTON — Five months after two Supreme Court justices made clear that they have serious questions about the constitutionality of the death penalty, lawyers are bringing plenty of related cases to the justices...

Frontal Constitutional Challenge

Shonda Walter, sentenced to death in Pennsylvania in 2005, has brought the most significant challenge to the justices, asking earlier this month for the court to address the fundamental question of the constitutionality of the death penalty head on.

“The question presented is whether, in all cases, the imposition of a sentence of death violates the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishments,” Walter’s lawyer, Daniel Silverman, writes.

Walter was convicted of murder and sentenced to death for the 2003 killing of an 83-year-old man, James Sementelli.

This is of course the most significant of claims that could be brought to the justices, as it asks for the court to end the death penalty across the board, across the country.
Walter’s lawyer argues that the death penalty should be abandoned for two reasons: “First, our standards of decency have evolved to the point where the institution is no longer constitutionally sustainable.”

“Second, the assumptions underlying this Court’s reinstitution of the death penalty after Furman have proved wrong, flawed, or illusory,” Walter’s lawyers continue. They argue the reliability of the process put in place since the 1970s cases ending and then approving the use of the death penalty still don’t protect against wrongful executions — and that arbitrariness and racial discrimination remain...."

The Death Penalty Endgame
JAN. 16, 2016

"How does the death penalty in America end?

For decades that has been an abstract question. Now there may be an answer in the case of Shonda Walter, a 36-year-old black woman on Pennsylvania’s death row. On Friday, the Supreme Court met to discuss whether to hear a petition from Ms. Walter, who is asking the justices to rule that in all cases, including hers, the death penalty violates the Eighth Amendment’s ban on cruel and unusual punishments...

Shonda Walter’s case is the first to take up Justice Breyer’s challenge. Ms. Walter was convicted of murdering an 83-year-old man named James Sementelli. Her appointed lawyers put on no defense and offered no argument that might have spared her from a death sentence. Pennsylvania appeals courts agreed that she had inexcusably bad representation, but they still upheld her conviction and sentence. Since Ms. Walter does not fit the special categories of defendants who are shielded from the death penalty, her appeal is based on the claim that all executions violate the Constitution...."

QUESTION PRESENTED

Recently, Justice Stephen Breyer suggested that “rather
than try to patch up the death penalty’s legal wounds one

more basic question: whether the death penalty violates the
Constitution.” Glossip v. Gross, 135 S. Ct. 2726, 2755
(2015) (Breyer, J., dissenting). This case, which seeks a
writ of certiorari following the affirmance on direct appeal
of Petitioner’s death sentence, provides this Court that
opportunity. The question presented is:

Whether, in all cases, the imposition of a sentence of
death violates the Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against
cruel and unusual punishments...."

Some happy Tuesday-- :badmood:

A foot of snow is on the ground here in lovely Upstate NY

ANDDDD I think the drain under the bathtub in my son's bathroom seems to be frozen (which is affecting the toilets, but not the other drains - which seems strange).
I have been running some hot water in the tub to see if that solves the problem, but the tub drain is running slow.

I hate this :gaah:- I'm not a handy person. :scared: so I don't know if I should call Roter-Rooter now or wait some???????
Last time this happened, it cost me about $1300 to have the plumber unfreeze the waste pipes (one of the pipes was actually solid ice on the inside and one of the waste pipe was actually hanging on the ground. :scared: ).

So- "pleasant" AM :sheesh:

(I'm taking a break from the mess now)

This makes me want to get an apartment where there is a superintendent to fix messes.

Anyway- some more potential "great" news for the weekend:

East Coast Snowstorm Is Expected to Hit This Weekend

"
Days after a snowfall on the East Coast, any hope of a return to 60-degree winter was officially dashed on Tuesday as meteorologists warned that the season’s first significant winter storm could be fast approaching.

But some forecasters say it’s too early to expect the storm to make history, and forget those dreams of Florida. The Sunshine State has its own weather problems...

The storm expected this weekend could change those numbers. Mr. Otto said that one to two feet of snow could be expected from Washington, D.C., to New York and Boston, but warned that it was still too early to pinpoint exact snowfall numbers yet.

“There’s potential for blizzard conditions” including strong winds, Mr. Otto said, “but it’s too early to say exactly who and where and when that could occur.”...

He did say that a nor’easter, a weather event defined by its blustery winds, is likely on its way..."

(I hate living here :( )

BBM1:

If it makes you feel any better, it was just SUNDAY when I got my shower working again (from around Jan 1). While I was waiting for the parts for SIL to do the repairs, the bathroom sink backed up and he had to snake it. After working on the plumbing for the shower over the better part of Saturday and Sunday, he was visibly relieved to have solved the problem. Then, the toilet wouldn't stop running. Ugh! (obviously, it's all connected). Still, I couldn't believe it! But thankfully, yesterday he fixed that, too.

I have to say that he is my hero. He doesn't just do what he says he's going to do, he does it well, and he does it with a smile on his face. On top of that, he insists that it's no problem at all. I wish I could clone him. :)

BBM2:

A windy 12 degrees here in DC, and they're calling for a possibly "historic" snowstorm Friday. Oh, joy. And while there's a slight chance they're wrong, all the previous BIG snows here (in my lifetime, at least) come from those dreaded nor'easters. I'm already thanking the heavens for my "Snow Angels" who are very proactive about letting me know they'll come and shovel me out. Thank goodness for the wonderful folks willing to do such arduous work for complete strangers.

p.s. I hate living here, too. Where, oh where, is that tropical island we were going to buy?

Hello Niner,

Heard on the news about the allegations about Tennis game fixing. Not sure if I have right person but someone maybe Federov? said someone approached him years ago about throwing a match. He doesn't think its widespread and he denied it was a problem.

I am not sure how he could say that because if he was approached about throwing even 1 match then that right there is a pretty big sign that some shady things may have been going on.

He may not have participated but others could have. I wonder if investigators will force him to tell who made him that offer to throw a match.

It seems all major sports are not immune from shady things. I never would have thought tennis could have had some issues. I wonder how widespread it was. Maybe just isolated incidents or something.

I think for the most part it was just allegations from someone.

If its frozen pipe or even a clogged pipe then it could affect the toilets depending on how they hooked up the pipes.

I hope you can get the drain cleared.

If you are having trouble with pipes freezing then what you can do is buy this wire wrap stuff that wraps around the pipe and you plug it into an outlet and the coils of wire heat up around the pipe and keep your pipes from freezing.

It is not too expensive to buy those wraps. Below is a link. You wrap it around the pipe in the areas that you know give you trouble.

If you know you have a frozen pipe then I think you can even put it on the frozen pipe and you may have to wait a couple days and I think it will thaw the pipe.

You keep it plugged in all winter. You just need an outlet close by. You have to be careful where you plug it in because you don't want the plug to touch water so you may want an electrician to hook it up to a proper GFI outlet.

I ended up buying about 6 of these things to keep my pipes from freezing in another rent house I was staying at years ago.

You can get as many as you need. But do be careful with proper plug in because you don't want to have a fire from the plug in part. A good electrician should be able to hook them up fairly cheaply.

I prefer the plug in kind but they also make regular insulation wrap to wrap around pipes. It can work too to prevent pipe freezing but when it is really cold it may not be as good as the plug in kind.

Of course somethings are funny to me these last few days. I'm getting tired of being in bed, but it's the best place in the house. My heated waterbed, large screen tv (dh and I have decided that were not getting glasses, just bigger tvs), my laptop and coloring books and perfect natural light to color in.
Shhhhhh, I had Anna pay for my new Faber Castel pencils, so dh wouldn't know the full price. I'm terrible aren't I. It will cost me in the long run - it's expensive to keep her mouth shut. I always sent her with dh because she'll spill her guts on everything he did. When we were on our fifteenth wedding anniversary down in San Antonio, one of my sisters babysat Anna and her brother, and Anna kept a list of infractions to present to me when we got back.

We need some music

I am half way through reading the document dumps (over eight hundred pages) in Teresa Seviers murder. I am amazed at how many cell phones were found in CWW house.

LOL :)

The games we play. :)

I once thought I had a great plan ordering something extra that I just had to have from QVC.

I had it all planned out and they told me the delivery date was going to be on a Friday of that week which I knew I would be home for. I got busted because it came a day early and when I got home from work, there was this open box on the table with a pair of evil eyes staring at me from behind the box. :)

I tried to explain it was a necessity. LOL My definition of a necessity didn't fly. LOL

Hey Hatfield! Actually the tennis player's name is Novak Djokovic (from Serbia) and he said he was apporached at the 2007 St. Petersburg tournament - actually HE personally wasn't approached, but one of his "team" was. You might be mixing up the name with Roger Federder (from Switzerland), who said - name the names!! Right now, it's actually just a "rumor", but if Djokovic says he was approached, it ISN'T a "rumor". I hope they get to the bottom of this! They said that 8 of these players (throwing a game) are in the Australian Open tournament. I agree to Federer - release the names! (saying it like "Release the Hounds! :D )

Yes, unfortunately, no sports are immune... I too never would have thought about tennis having issues, but than, I didn't think Bicycle racing would either...

Oh - I wished daisymae a Happy Birthday thru PM, and she said she would join us soon!!! I do see she Thanked a few posts! at ya!!

Now watching Maria Sharapova beating the crap out of a poor Belarus girl... :)

Okay - I need some prayers from you all - my sister (with the non-hodkgins lymophoma) had a set back; she is starting a new experimental drug program, but had to get "rid" of the other drugs in her system before starting this new drug and she is having problems - headache and right upper arm are swollen and hurting. So went to Stanford ER for an ultrasound - oops - just got an email from BIL:

The news is mostly good. They don't think the arm symptoms are a new cancer site and the ultrasound didn't show any blood clots. They think the headaches, lethargy, low energy, achiness, are most likely a result of stopping the Imbruvica meds.
The not so good news it that they think Monik may have torn her rotator cuff doing the bowflex. She's in a sling and on some heavy pain meds.
But, we hope she will be good enuf to have the scheduled scan on Thurs and start the Clinical Trial as planned next week.

Prayers would still be good! :D for the new experimental drugs!!

Signing off for the night! :pcguru:

Zuri....cant wait to hear more about your small miracles.

I am a firm believer too.

I think I may have shared the time where I came home from a funeral of a SIL and I can pretty much guarantee she gave me a sign thanking us for going to the funeral. It got very late that evening after the funeral and everyone was sleeping except me.

I was watching TV and a commercial just happened to come on that had something in it that we were just talking about that very day at the funeral. It wasn't just a coincidence in my mind because the subject was so unique that I had never heard it used either before or since then. I almost fell out of my chair when the commercial mentioned the subject and then I just smiled and realized I had my SIL visiting for the last time to say goodbye.

I was channel surfing at the time and I bet my SIL pointed me to that channel with that commercial knowing the subject was about to be brought up.

The thing where I really know it was a sign was because there was a 2nd thing that happened right after that. I cant remember what it was but when the 2nd thing happened then I knew for sure.

Hooray, Daisymae may come for a chat! I hope so, I have missed her. I do hope her arm gets better this year.

Y/N, winter is wreaking havoc in your area, it seems. I am so sorry about your water pipes. I hope they don't burst. Hatfield has some good suggestions. Any way to get warmth on them is the key, it seems. good luck.

SBM, BBM
We just got a 55" TV and I was so surprised that I can read those scrawling words at the bottom of news shows! I do think you have the right attitude .... new glasses every year (which don't really help me) or a bigger TAv every 10-20 years? I'll take the TV.

Prayers would still be good! :D for the new experimental drugs!!

Signing off for the night! :pcguru:

Many prayers for your sister.

LOL

You weren't going to just put on the counter with other necessary's and hope it blends in and you can argue that it's been there for awhile? Dh has Anna that can tell knows what all and where everything in the house is and when it got here. I told him she's inventoried the house top to bottom, he can't hide much anymore.

Anna dropped a dime on me last September when our grand daughter turned eighteen, and I sent her several presents and five hundred dollars in cash. One hundred ones, twenty five, ten tens, five twenties, and one one hundred dollar bill. It's a big day for her, and I wanted her to have a very good day. I told dh that I spent much more on her when she was here each summer for clothes, shoes, and getting her hair and nails done before she when back to her mothers for the year, and that he was getting off cheap. I sent her flowers on her sixteenth birthday - it will be something she'll always remember how much we love her. They were purple because that's her favorite color.

That was so sweet of you. You are right that she will remember it too for the rest of her life.
That was very special. Good job.

I've posted this before, but I still find it funny (and appropriate):
