Barry Manilow announced Monday that he has lung cancer and will reschedule his January shows to undergo surgery.

The 82-year-old singer-songwriter revealed the diagnosis in a statement shared via Instagram on Monday. He said that he recently had bronchitis for two periods of multiple weeks, so his doctor ordered an MRI out of precaution.

Something very similar happened to my dad in late 2022. (Gosh, 3 years already?) He had that lobe of his lung removed, and opted for no follow-up treatment which his doctors agreed with.

I hope Mr. Manilow makes a speedy recovery, and doesn't die from something else 8 months later like Dad did. Miss you, Daddy! <3

My favorite Barry Manilow memory: In the fall of 1995, I attended two R.E.M./Radiohead concerts on two consecutive nights at an amphitheater in suburban St. Louis. I stayed at a nearby hotel and took advantage of the shuttle van, and while returning from the second show, the station the driver had on started playing “Copacabana,” and we ALL started singing along. Upon arrival at the hotel, we all wanted to stay aboard until the song was over, but the driver said we had to get out so he could pick up the next load. Too funny!
