That article made me feel so sad for Susan. She could be anyone's daughter. She was such a sweet person and so resourceful. I wished she had the opportunity to have been loved by a partner who was deserving of her love.

Josh made Susan ride a bike 14 miles round trip to work for two months - Made her sell her car

March 1, 2010 -

Gifford said, "We can say without a reservation that Susan was a victim of domestic abuse in her own home."

It has been discovered that Josh controlled the finances even though it was Susan who brought in the bulk of the money. Susan's friends and family say that Josh did not even allow her to buy the groceries she needed for her boys, and complained when she bought them shoes.

They say he sold Susan's car against her wishes, leaving her dependent upon him. He undermined her as a parent.

Josh was extremely controlling when it came to money. He restricted the amount of groceries Susan bought for her boys and, while friends and family once believed Susan labored in her garden because she loved gardening, they have since learned she was forced to garden to provide healthy and nutritious foods for her growing children.
Jennifer Graves, Susan's sister-in-law, said, "She had to really fight to buy groceries for her kids."

"I remember one time," Jennifer said, "when Josh made her feel guilty for buying a pair of shoes for one of the boys when he outgrew them."

"There was another time," she said, "When Josh borrowed money from Chuck [Chuck Cox is Susan's father] and he refused to repay it, and he refused to let Susan repay her own parents money they borrowed years ago."

Jennifer said when Susan bought anything for herself, "He would get angry whenever Susan tried to purchase non-essential items for herself like clothes and makeup."
During the Feb. 15 press conference,Gifford said that Josh changed PIN numbers so Susan could not access her own bank accounts.

"There was at least one time," Jennifer said, "when things got physical in their relationship."

Examiner.com spoke with two legal experts, Attorney and Legal Analyst, Anne Bremner, and Family Law Attorney, Juliana Wong, of Stafford Frey Cooper for their expert opinion.

"Many of the clients that we represent may not suffer from physical violence, but more often than not," Bremner and Wong conferred, "will be victims of mental violence. A successful perpetuation of the abuse is through financial restraints and limitations."

"For obvious reasons," they said, "by taking away the funds from the victim, the victim is left without the necessary funds to support themselves or the children and is completely reliant on the perpetrator. This is the most effective way of controlling a person."

Examiner.com learned from those closest to Susan that selling Susan's car was Josh's idea. Susan was not happy about it but finally relented. Josh claimed they didn't need a second car and it was too expensive to keep up two cars. Was it another form of control?
Gifford said during the Feb. 15 press conference that Josh held the only set of keys to the family mini-van.

The couple seeks marriage counseling
Susan confided in Caldwell, telling her that Josh continually told her she was crazy. Susan was so distraught by what Josh said that she told Debbie she went to a therapist to be analyzed and was told she was not crazy.

Caldwell suggested they try marriage counseling. She told Susan to ask their Bishop, who ultimately signed the couple up for counseling.

Caldwell said Susan confided in her, telling her that Josh became angry during counseling sessions and that the counselor called him on it once.

Susan also told Debbie Josh's goal for Susan was that she not confide in her friends or family about their marital problems.

Susan told Caldwell Josh's behavior would change when he talked with his father and brother on the phone. Susan said he would get angry and mean.

Shelby Gifford, spokesperson for the Cox family, said Susan kept many things from her parents in an effort to protect them.

::: snipped for length :::

No way that Susan was buying beauty products as she needed them. And that camping picture on the website? I bet Susan knitted the caps and scarves that she and the boys are wearing. Could be why she took up knitting?

ANd what a sorry excuse for a man to not want his children to have adequate food or clothing, shoes and other essentials. I am just speechless on that one.

It'll be interesting if Josh ever mentions her accomplishments with schooling to become a licensed stockbroker. Curious if he will mention her time at WellsFargo or not, since that is where it was reported she kept her journal of incidents with him, and also, I have a feeling that thats where her emails (at least the bulk of them) to her friends were coming from as well, when she confided in them.

I have a feeling Josh is trying to distance her from Wells Fargo for those exact reasons, thus his hocky malarky condescending nonsense about doing hair and socializing with her friends, because 'it was her favorite thing to do'.

Also have to wonder what his father and brother was telling Josh during their conversations that resulted in his becoming so angry? That he wasn't enough of a man to keep his wife under control from her irresponsible spending ways? That he needs to 'wear the pants'? That they were disappointed in him or ashamed and tired of him calling and venting or complaining?

Do you think Susan was concerned Josh would try to hurt her parents, thus her silence in 'protecting them' from the truth about her marriage? Did he threaten her parents safety during one of their arguements? I'm sure the bulk of her withholding was to spare them heartbreak.

If Josh slipped up and told Susan to shut up in public, then you can bet that he said a lot worse to her at home. He has no respect for her as a person at all.

Please Lord, protect those little boys from that family. Please end the cycle of abuse and teach them to honor the women in their lives. Shield their hearts from hate and help them respect all of God's creations. In your name I pray. Amen

I know most of us here already believe that the image on the homepage is "shopped." I just wanted to point out why I do not believe that the fire is real.

Here is why-

To me, it looks like the fire was added to a family photo specifically to verify that they indeed did go camping and have fires in the snow. I believe that the original photo probably looked something like this -

JoshSusanPowellFamilyWinterCampfire.jpg

(note- I just did this in Photoshop in about 10 minutes, so it isn't perfect... but you get the idea)

The image was probably taken by a friend or family member. The flames just came later to verify Josh's story. Typically when the average person takes a photo of someone's family they will center the family in the photo. However, when viewing a photo, or doing graphic design, the mind tends to like things that fall on thirds. Any simple photo editing class will teach this. A simple way to make a photo interesting is to crop an image so the focal point lands on an imaginary line drawn on a third of an image... Maybe JP's enthusiasm for photography has given him away here...

*cough* Notice the fire lands on the right third of the image...

JoshSusanPowellFamilyWinterCampf-2.jpg

One other thing worth noting is the image name. If you view the page source (CTL + U in firefox) you will see that the image name for the photo is "JoshSusanPowellFamilyWinterCampfire.jpg." Now if I were saving a photo I would just save it as "FamilyCamping" or something like that. Instead, JP or someone working with him on the site has made sure to use keywords like "Josh, Susan, Powell, Campfire." Being involved in web development I can tell you there is really only one reason why you would be so specific, and that is search engine optimization. This means that when google or yahoo index the site and collect all the info that will be used when people search they will now have an image to display any time someone searches "Josh Powell Camping" or any of the included words. The point I am trying to make is... JP really wants people to see that picture, so he has made it as accessible as possible.

Someone earlier said that maybe Josh had set up a tripod and took the picture with a flash.

Although this is possible, a flash would not be able to light up as far behind them as in the picture. There would have to be some other light source. I would suggest that it was not a fire, because being that low to the ground it would cast very long shadows. (Think of the shadow at sunset. It is stretched when its light source is hitting it from the side rather than above.)

I would suggest that the lighting is up higher. Possibly from lamp posts in a lighted park, or outside lights on a house, but definitely not purely from the flash.

Have you ever taken a picture in the dark with the flash on. Almost everything behind subject is dark. If it were only taken with the flash, it would probably look like this-

JoshSusanPowellFamilyWinterCampf-1.jpg

(Again, please ignore my quick Photoshop job. I know they aren't cut out very well.)

Because of how bright the original image is I'd bargain that they are in a backyard, park, or school... unless the were camping at the world's best lit campground...
If they were in these places I really doubt they would have a campfire. (another reason to doubt the integrity of the original photo)

I am so glad the truth is coming out and the Examiner is printing it. Josh is a typical controlling little cowardly man who has to now try to control the public's view of his missing wife.... He can't fool me and the more he writes the more foolish he looks.

Susan was an angel married to an evil weak controlling jealous man who couldn't stand her success and her beauty which was from the inside out. Darkness can't abide light and evil can't abide goodness. I wonder if he realizes there are many more men like him in this world who have to emotionally, verbally and physically abuse their wives to feel big and good about themselves-and he's not special.

God knows the truth and so does Josh. There will be a day of reckoning and he will pay. I hope and pray justice comes soon but if not soon, I believe with all my heart it will come! It must be tough waiting and waiting and waiting for that knock at the door... oh I can't wait. If not in this world then the next !

Oh by the way I just wonder if the police have picked up on the contradictions between what he's written these last few days and his interviews? Yes.. siree... Josh keep writing.

"Therefore, her home based business was never advertised and she never officially accepted payment for services. Many people would offer tips and they would usually reimburse her for products they used.
Susan never held back when it came to purchases at the beauty supply. Of course, Josh has always been happy to support Susan's efforts in any way he could. Josh suggested that she turn it into a real business and he offered to teach her accounting basics."

This sounds to me that Susan enjoyed doing hair for people she knew, but Josh resented her doing it without being compensated as he thought she should have been. In his comment above he says people "usually" reimbursed her for supplies-which suggests sometimes they didn't. He probably was very upset when Susan did not charge them. Josh states here that he wanted her to make it a "real business". Diphi from an earlier posting (sorry if I didn't remember how to spell your name right) was wondering if Susan did want to leave her stockbroker job to return to cosmetology.

If Susan was 200 hours short of being licensed in Utah when she moved there, years ago; she could have completed those requirements a long time ago. Instead she pursued a career as a stockbroker.

The way that Josh micromanaged everything Susan did, he probably would have been hovering over her clients, insisting that Susan was using too much shampoo or conditioner which was cutting into their profits. Too bad he didn't care as much about how he was doing his own job; perhaps he wouldn't have forgotten to go to work on that Monday.

Oh... My....

Like I said earlier, every time I pop in here it gets worse.

That man is a complete nutjob.

God please be with those boys :(

ITA. I am OUTRAGED at this. Very telling on these peanut balled monkeys who have some serious psychological issues. Wasn't Steven raised in the area of WA state that adhered to "hatred" ? IMO

These roosters are about to meet the hens strutting their stuff.

I thought the same thing...that picture barely looks like Susan, and is most unflattering, with the "foil" in her hair...like he is doing this deliberately

I also thought he was sort of hinting that she was "breaking" the (cosmetology) laws etc..by running an informal "business" out of the home
without a license

very strange....I also was totally creeped when he says

"Most of these plans have been put on hold for the time being."

This is just totally bizarre...I can't remember a "case" where anyone acted this brazen and just off the wall

This guy is certainly a "wreck". I hope the Cox's will begin the legal process of getting those boys soon. The helping proof is right here.

Excuse me while I run to the bathroom to barf....I have not met another man who is so woefully lacking in self-awareness. Do you think his family is sitting around reading this stuff and telling him it is good? That it will help take the heat off him? Or are they telling him to post that fetid garbage in the hopes the cops will come get him? They must be really sick of him now. I'll bet dollars to donuts the younger sister is stuck taking care of the boys all the time while the men do "important" stuff like build crappy websites.

I would love to get some insight on the only daughter among this group of "loving men".

By that time, I'm sure she had an idea about his weak employment record and inability to provide well for his family. Perhaps she felt a career as a stockbroker would bring in more income and help ease some of the financial burden. Just a thought.
Oh, in after thought, she may have decided not to persue the completion of her cosmetology license for Utah. If he was condescending to her friends while they were there getting their hair done (or even to her) and also didn't help out with the kids, I can easily see why she would decide against a home business.

Getting out of the house was likely a good therapy for her, if you will. A break from the constant emotional abuse she had to endure.

Also, its common for women who know how to do hair to have a small list of clients of friends who's hair they take care of. Sometimes they charge a very small fee which covers the cost of product and usually not much else. Even some (not saying all) cosmetologists who are licensed will not charge other than the cost of the product and supplies they use.

I really don't think he wanted her to have a home based business. Its pretty obvious he didn't support her when doing hair by not helping with the kids when she was. But since none of us believe his diatribe the point is moot.

Thank you so much for that! I have been bothered for a long time about that. I thought for sure there should have been some form of shadows on that picture. It just screamed at me!! I also believe that this picture may have been taken during the day or late afternoon with still ample sun, and that he tried to 'darken' it to suggest its night time taking, but I really don't think it was taken at night.

sunnydee,

I saw on that same TV news report that Susan did indeed love being a cosmetologist and would have pursued that career IF she could have.

However, because Susan had such a lazy, employment-challenged husband who would not/ could not support the family, she chose to become trained in stock brokering because it paid much more than cosmetology.

It was obvious many years ago that it would be Susan, NOT Josh who would be the major, (and often ONLY) breadwinner of the family.

Poor Susan, she was so loving -- so patient -- and she got such a raw, stinking reward.

I haven't LOATHED :furious: any wife murderer this much since Golden-Boy-Scott Peterson!

Please Cox Family -- do anything necessary to get Charlie and Braden removed from the demented, sociopatic clan from Hell!

----------

Regarding Susan not being compensated for her cosmetology materials: Josh is a LIAR and exaggerator. Susan often TRADED her beautician products and skills for services provided to her and her family.

Apparently Josh expected free products - free services for HIMSELF and HIS family but didn't like to reciprocate.

Josh's unreasonable demands didn't last long when he was carpooling with John Hellewell. John stopped the carpooling after a week.

Can you imagine what Joshua demanded 24/7 from Susan?

imho

He can afford it when he's paying the Technical Coordinator in pancakes!

My favorite phrase from that site is in the bio where it says that Micheal "did" two years of college.

Lol! That jumped right out at me also and made me crack up! How about completed? Whomever is writing this stuff is about as dumb as a sack of eyeless potatoes!

Thank you for sharing this. This makes more sense now considering her situation. Sounds like she did a lot of 'bartering' and other methods (kintting and gardening) to make up for the financial restraints Josh put on her.

Btw, do you live in Utah? Just wondered as your post sounds like you have more first hand knowledge, may know her or her family and or are closer in distance than most of us here are.

I'm sorry, I didn't see your post until after I posted mine. According to Susan's friends who were interviewed, you are absolutely correct with your statements.

And boy, aint it the truth that anything Josh says is moot! :loser:

AlexisFresca,

You're more than welcome. ;)

No, I don't live in Utah -- nor do I know any of the players.

I'm just waaay too obsessed with this horrific tragedy and read and watch anything and everything I can about all the details.

It's almost becoming more depressing than I can tolerate. I need breaks every few days. I don't know why I bother. It takes a long time to catch up. LOL

Since JP allegedly threw a fit when Susan bought what JP viewed as nonessentials like clothes, makeup, fruit, vegetables, etc. I can only imagine how he reacted when she came home with products from the beauty supply shop!

JP: "How much did you spend!"
SP: "$145.00! Martha and Rachelle are going to reimburse me!"
JP: "You're damn straight they will! You tell them to bring cash when they come! No checks! And I'm going to collect the money before you start!"
SP: "Please don't embarrass me like that! If you keep it up, I'm going to have to start going to my client's houses!"
JP: "Oh no you won't! How are you going to get there? Walk?"
SP: "Believe me, they'll come pick me up! It's worth it to them!"
JP: "Over my dead body! You are NOT leaving this house!"
SP "If I thought you'd kill yourself, I'd leave and come back every five minutes until you did!"
