Those were the days, those were the days! My sister & I used to dawdle through breakfast, listening to the radio, hoping that the announcer would say that due to weather, girls would be allowed to wear slacks to school! That meant slacks, folks, not jeans and only real athletes wore sweats. Otherwise it was snowpants under your dress, all the girls crowded into the closet to take off the snowpants before sitting at our desks.

My parochial school never closed due to inclement weather. My siblings and I walked to and from school (about a mile each way) rain or shine. I remember the nuns telling classmates who struggled to get their boots on or off to keep plastic bags in them and slip them over their shoes when putting boots on. Mom collected enough bread wrappers for the five of us :D
