MEXICO CITY (AP) — Something rare gave children in a north-central Mexico state a day off from school Friday — snow.

The heaviest accumulation in Zacatecas state was about two inches, enough to snarl traffic in a state where measurable snow is almost unheard of.

A light dusting and below-freezing temperatures led the Education Department to cancel classes in the state capital of Zacatecas, 300 miles north of Mexico City, the government news agency Notimex said.

Meanwhile, police closed some roads and restricted access to others leading to mountain peaks which surround Mexico City, after snow fell in those high-altitude areas.
