I think he ended up on the floor after the bodyguard broke into the room dislodging the carabiner. They can look like what many people use as key rings. I wonder if other people actually use larger ones to exercise in their rooms or perhaps for auto erotica asphyxia.

I was trying to figure out if Chris was still living in Paris with his family. I wondered where his siblings lived and other Soundgarden members were living. Yeah, I'm too curious. Anyways...

Chris has a brother Peter with a remarkably similar voice.
Shorter, but looks similar to Chris. He, along with some of the sisters, had a band back in the 90's. Peter, is a public figure and mentioned on the Grunge Story Tellers site as talented in his own right. He has some fine music cd's of his own out there. I checked out his fb, and it looks like he's somewhat of an exercise guru as well.

Having spent many years on tour myself most use a carabiner to keep their laminate or credentials for tour clipped to their pant belt loops.

Thanks for sharing this. I couldn't figure out why he would have a carabiner laying around. Just the time and place, seemed like an unnecessary and random thing for him to have. My brain was running wild with conspiracies. This makes much more sense though.

Our family uses carabiners for various things. As a clip on the stroller for holding purse or bags, as keychains (clip keys to purse, belt etc), on backpacks for holding water bottle. I could go on and on for the many uses our family has for carabiners. Pretty much anything you would want to quickly and easily clip to.

Having said that we are a family of hikers so its has been a common thing in our house for many years, for multiple uses, not just hiking.

ETA - It's like use it once for something and you find all sorts of other uses.

Our family uses carabiners for various things. As a clip on the stroller for holding purse or bags, as keychains (clip keys to purse, belt etc), on backpacks for holding water bottle. I could go on and on for the many uses our family has for carabiners. Pretty much anything you would want to quickly and easily clip to.

Did he pack the carabiner in his suitcase specifically that day to be used with the exercise band? Was it spur of the moment, like 'ok, I'll just attach this band to something. oh, perfect, I'll use that carabinder I always have with me.' Did he just always have a couple attached to his touring bags? I couldn't see him needing one for power cords/etc... as I'm sure someone else looked after all his gear. I also couldn't see him needing one for house keys. Needing one for ID purposes somewhat answers that question for me, whether or not it's the actual reason for having one.

TMZ reported Friday that the Soundgarden frontman fastened the exercise band to a carabiner that was used to hang himself from the top of his hotel bathroom door. Cornell reportedly jammed the carabiner so tightly into the door frame that it left an indentation.

We've learned the Soundgarden frontman secured a red elastic exercise band attached to a carabiner to the top of his hotel bathroom door. A carabiner is a device commonly used by mountain climbers which they attach to a belt to keep them from falling. The device can withstand enormous weight.

Cornell jammed the door shut with the carabiner at the top of the frame. The carabiner was jammed so tight it left an indentation in the door frame.

I could see him having one for his tour laminate, but it would be a small one. You don't walk around with a giant one around your neck like Flava Flav and his clock. How would it take his weight? He's a thin guy but still.

There are large carabiners, he probably took the part where it opens and shoved it over the top of the door, then closed the door to give it some extra strength. Carabiners are strong, they are meant to hold body weight if properly placed.

I agree....they are very common and handy. I have a few of them myself. I use lanyard for my name badge at work. It has a swipe feature to access certain areas, however there are several areas with enhanced security and in case of a network or power fail a key is required. When I know I'm going to a department, area or another site that requires keys I attach a small carabiner with my keys onto my lanyard. Otherwise my carabiner w/keys are on my work bag, backpack or in my purse.

Vicky says her last conversation with Chris came about 30 minutes before his body was found hanging in a Detroit hotel room. Vicky says just before Chris called her, the lights in their family home — which Chris could control remotely from his phone — began flickering on and off. When he called she asked him if he had just manipulated the lights and he said no — that he did it an hour before.

Vicky immediately became suspicious because Chris was onstage an hour before. Things got more ominous as he began slurring, and every minute the slurring got worse. He was complaining about the show and his crew, saying, “They f***ed up again. They had 3 days to fix my in-ears and I was getting static. I couldn’t hear.”

He then started to complain, “I blew my voice. I blew my voice.” He kept repeating it...

.....said to Chris, “I need to know what you took tonight. You don’t sound right, sweetheart.” He replied, “I was really angry and I just took 2 Ativan. I’m really pissed and I had to calm myself down.”

Vicky replied, “I need to know what you took. It doesn’t sound like 2 Ativan. It sounds like you took something else. You need to tell me now what you took. I forgive you.”

Vicky says at that point Chris’ entire demeanor changed. He got aggressive — not toward her — but his tone was “cocky and aggressive.” She says she immediately had a flashback to 14 years before, when Chris was abusing Oxycontin … when it got so bad at one point he nearly died.

"As we reported, sources connected with the investigation tell us EMTs and cops saw fresh track marks on Chris’ arm. Vicky says she never knew Chris to use needles and says just before he left for Detroit that afternoon, he was walking the streets of New York with her in a t-shirt and there was no evidence of track marks on his body."
