PB: Were you aware of the fact that the glove of Mr. Qwabe tested positive for primer residue? PE: I'm aware of that.

PB: When did you find this out? PE: During consultation in preparation for this trial.

PB hands in photos of Qwabe's glove.

PB: You can see the area between left thumb and index finger has been cut out. PE: I see that.

PB: That's the area that tested positive. PE concedes.

PB: Why was this report never exposed to the court during Mngeni's trial? PE: I have no knowledge.

PB: You did not work through the docket before you testified? PE: I'm aware that primer residue tests were done. I just don't have any knowledge of the findings

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 2m2 minutes ago
PB: You did not think, as the primary ballistics expert that it's NB to determine the result of the tests?

PE: I'm not a primer residue expert. I know that those tests are done regularly.

PB: You didn't think it was NB to find out about the results? PE: I could have made enquiries about the tests.

Defence trying to AGAIN discredit evidence and work of prosecution's ballistics expert witness.

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 2m2 minutes ago
PB: That's not my question. I asked if you didn't think it was NB. PE: It is important.

PB: You'll be aware, at the time, Qwabe and Mngeni were accusing each other of being the shooter.

PB: even my learned colleagues of the state weren't aware. Can you tell us how that happened? PE: No.

Botha: let's move on. (Yes, lets :p)

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 2m2 minutes ago
PB refers to a pack of crime scene photographs...dealing with the seats again.

PB: There's about 30m between her knee and front seat? PE: there is a considerable distance.

PB: The model that you used's left knee is almost touching the back seat. PE: Correct. (re: reconstruction)

PB: Did you place the stickers on the body of the model, depicting the wounds? PE: yes

  • #206
Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 2m2 minutes ago
PB: Where did you see that the wound on the deceased's left hand, was on the position where you placed the sticker?

PE:It was not necessarily the place where the wound was. We wanted to ascertain the direction of the bullet.

PB: You just randomly placed stickers on the body of this model. What were you trying to achieve?

PE: Wanted to show a line of the wounds & different positions in the vehicle in the manner the person could've turned.

PB: You placed a sticker on the left finger knuckle. PE: I understand that the wound was not on that spot on the hand.

PB: The wound on the neck is also not correct. PE: I just wanted to indicate where the bullet went through.

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 2m2 minutes ago
PB: Would you agree with me if those stickers are lined up with sticker on the seat, this model would not have had..

PB: an exit wound on her shoulder, but near right ear? PE: It's difficult to say how a bullet travels through the body.

PB: It's simple. Do you agree that if one lines up the stickers, that would've caused an exit wound close to right ear?

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 2m2 minutes ago
Botha: I am at a complete loss on what you were trying to achieve with those stickers.

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 2m2 minutes ago
PB: It's of utmost NB to get a model of same height, etc, not so? PE: We couldn't get a precise model.

PB: What was the height of the deceased? PE: I think, 1.59. PB: It was 1.595m

  • #209
Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 57s57 seconds ago
PB:You will concede that the NB of this is obvious. If the person is tall, they'd have to lean over more. That's logic. PE: Yes.

PB: Mr. Steyl, ballistics expert for the accused, will testify.

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 3m3 minutes ago
PE: correct. Botha: that's why its important to put sticker at exact height.

Defence continues grilling ballistics expert. Shrien looks relaxed in the dock.

PB: Can you dispute this? PE: It's difficult to say if the body was against the back seat.

PE: It's possible that the hairs would be embedded there, if the body was supported by the seat.

PB: I want to ask you about the exit wound of the deceased. You did not deal, in detail, with this aspect.

PB: Are you able to assist the court with details? PE:I don't want to comment on that because I was not at the autopsy.

PB: Mr. Steyl also did a reconstruction. He used a similar Sharan model & a model of similar height & build as Anni. (oh dear, what money can buy... but I hope that will be verified, they can't just take the word of PT surely.)

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 3m3 minutes ago
Botha: Defence's expert also adjusted the seats, he positioned the hand and left shoulder of model to line up wounds.

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 36s36 seconds ago
Botha: Mr. Steyl positioned firearm to make contact with the model's left hand, measured from gun handle to left front seat = 80cm.

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 3m3 minutes ago
Botha: it was only when he (DEFENCE EXPERT) wedged himself between the two front seats that he was able to reach.

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 3m3 minutes ago
PB: Steyl has an arm length of 60cm & could not reach the grip of pistol with his left or right hands.

PB: Only when he was lodged between the two front seats, he could get a grip. Do you accept that? PE: Yes.

PB: It would've been impossible for Mngeni to reach the pistol if he was positioned in the front of the Sharan.

PE: I accept, it would be difficult, if the shooter was in a seated position.

Traverso: The question was, is it impossible? PE: It would be impossible, My Lady.

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 3m3 minutes ago
Botha: our expert agrees that the trigger pressure was normal.

Botha: its a singe action pistol. One would have to 🤬🤬🤬🤬 the hammer back first, which makes an audible clicking sound.

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 3m3 minutes ago
PB: if there was a round in the chamber, one would have to 🤬🤬🤬🤬 the hammer. PE: Correct.

PB: One would be able to hear it. (if gun is cocked) PE: Yes

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 2m2 minutes ago
PB: Is it possible for the firearm to be fired if the necessary pressure is placed on the trigger? PE: It's possible.

Engelbrecht steps down.

State calls Leopold Leisser. The German Master. (This could be interesting. I would like to know what SD demeanor is like while he's giving his testimony.)

Mopp: Is it usual for clients to stay over at your place?

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 3m3 minutes ago
State: Was it usual to have clients sleep over? Leisser: no that's not usual, but he did ask me in advance and I allowed it.

We've heard that Dewani slept over on two occasions at Leisser's home.

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 2m2 minutes ago
Mopp: The witness will testify about a conversation he had with Mr. Dewani, where Dewani made certain diosclosures.

Traverso: Why will that evidence be relevant? (Judge obviously not happy, not interested in SD sex life but Mopp wants to ask about Anni)

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 3m3 minutes ago
Mopp: Dewani says he is bisexual. Judge: it's common cause. Mopp: Dewani made statements to this witness.

Leigh-Anne Jansen ‏@LA_JANSEN 3m3 minutes ago
Traverso: Is this witness going to prove that Mr. Dewani had to get married?

Traverso: When it's evidence of this nature, I think twice.

Mopp: We have a situation where a month before the accused had to get married, he makes disclosures to the witness.

Traverso: Please put it in context. Mopp: My Lady, I am trying.

EWN Reporter ‏@ewnreporter 4m4 minutes ago
Judge:when its evidence of this nature I think twice. Unless I'm satisfied evidence will achieve something I won't allow.
