Combrink objects, Galloway counters, saying that Olckers is contradicting herself

Judge Desai permits Olckers to answer

Galloway is on fire now
"Then you yourself make calculations on these flawed results"

Olckers says uniform system in place; must be followed. Couldn't find where in SOPs stated samples below 1 and 2.5ng can be used.

Olckers says she would have stopped these samples at qPRC stage

So you're saying these 40 samples shouldn't be used, because they're fatally flawed? Yes, they're invalid, Olckers says.

But then you use results to make calculations, Galloway asks.
Yes, used affidavits to show problems these samples brought about.

Olckers explaining how Otto used qualitative data, and not quantitative data, in her report.

https://twitter.com/CapeTownEtc

[Sheesh. This is agony]

Refers to Olckers' report. "It appears Lt Col Otto only took qualitative aspects into account." She read 3 samples in shower

Quantitative should be taken into account. Can't categorically make distinction from only qualitative data of #VanBreda brothers and mother.

Combrink jumps to object after having a number of discussions with counsel

Galloway sounds quite frustrated now

Live streaming off line!

Not taking processes into account, mixture can't be distinguished from each other,Olckers says. Probable it contains only male DNA

Result nothing to do with calculations, but point out how wrong Lt Col Otto is? Olckers says lab made an incorrect interpretation

Is anyone else experiencing streaming issues? It's dreadful where I am.

News24 have done a terrible job with live streaming this trial, the worst I've ever seen! Many people complaining and giving up!

  • #189
By the time I posted the last tweet, the live streaming still had about 10 minutes to go!

[Ye gods. Now she's complaining about South Africa's fingerprinting system]

Galloway questioning Olckers about 'random match probability' - again another reference is made to the 2001 Arizona case

Is there something wrong with SA's fingerprinting system? Desai poses an interesting question. It's problematic, Olckers confirms

Olckers discussing the foreign peaks as testified by her last week, a very low-level profile present, external DNA not of family

Desai discounts this area of foreign peaks, inconsequential he concludes. Witness unable to provide effect of this finding

I'm not sure what's happening but I can't see the News24 live news feed containing the tweets and the live streaming is stopping intermittently.

For the moment I can only post Tracey's tweets. Sorry.

As far as I can see Olckers willl not accept anything can be deduced correctly if someone has not followed the SOPs to the absolute rule. She is determined not to say that even though the amount of the sample was not as large as the SOP states, it could be that it would still give the correct results. Desai picked up this possibility. Definitely a Rules is Rules lady with little/no lab experience in this field.

Sadly I have to go out again and won't be back until after court finishes, unless I am very lucky. I will rely on the excellent reporting here to bring me up to date. TIA.

See you later.

You're doing just great, JJ!

Why its relevant is it points to something that can't be explained in this profile. Can contribute to uncertainty of measurement.

Could be only allele high enough to be scored by the system. Can't say if its an allele or not. Agrees with Lt Col Otto.

She used low res copies, rulers etc to check results.

Galloway: You manipulated unclear data.

I didn't, Olckers says.

Olckers says she stated that it was unclear.

Olckers says docs given to her was not of sufficient quality to check heights of other peaks. Didn't give colour, hi-res copies.

Sample status report of wooden bench listed full profile, low-level mix. System agreed there was a low-level mix of something.

Fingernail swab of Martin #VanBreda showed Rudi's profile. Artefact peaks present. Result used showed full profile mix, no artefacts.

"You manipulated uncertain data to try get a result" - Galloway to Olckers.
The witness defends this point.

https://twitter.com/CapeTownEtc

Foreign peaks noted in blood spatter swab on wooden bench. These not present in Van Breda family profiles, Olckers says

Foreign peaks present in the profiles not mentioned in state report to the court - Olckers

Foreign peaks means that there is an unexplained peak

What does that mean? Asks Judge Desai

I can't answer that, says Olckers

"There could be a low-level mixture present in the samples."

Olckers says she can't be sure what it is

Alleles or peaks, Galloway asks. Peaks, she says. Present in profiles that Otto's reports didn't mention at all

Desai: "What is effect?"

Olckers: "It could be a very low-level profile which is present of which we see only this one peak."

On duvet, low-level mix and no artefacts stated. Can't categorically say if its an allele or part of a profile, Olckers says.

"Foreign peak can't be explained." Dr Olckers says neither she nor Lt Col. Otto can state what it is.
