Galloway cross-examining. Points out he didn't install it or maintain it. Rabie doesn't know the name of the system.

Rabie based his findings on his knowledge of security systems.

Any indication its system wasn't working that night like it's supposed to?
Rabie says he can't say.

Fence was tested that night and 2 witnesses said all was in order, Galloway says.

Both security officers said no alarms or reports from Parow received. If office didn't contact them, wouldnt be aware, Rabie says.

Officer at Parow room didn't receive any alarm activations. Rabie says red line would show on screen. If didn't see it, won't know.

Rabie says he would argue with Wyngaard, who says he drove along fence with light to check it. Not good monitoring to do both.

Video recording showed a buck, but nothing untoward or strange, Galloway says.

Rabie says there is a misconception that if you have electric fencing, you are completely safe. This isn't the case.

You don't have to be an expert to get over electric fencing, Rabie says. Easiest option is to get over it.

If more than one person, higher chance that you will be seen? Yes, Rabie says. Easier to get in, but likely to be spotted.

Concept of false alarm not impossible. Rabie says its called a 'nuisance alarm'.

Adv Botha re-examines. Cameras clearly visible? Rabie says he can't say.

Rabie concludes testimony. Next witness only expected tomorrow. Start at 11:00 as he is returning from Namibia. Adjourned.

Double-storey house between Taljaard and #VanBreda home, Blows points out. Op't Hof's house closer, across road. No building in between.

Murders took place before 4:24 according to cellphone records, agree it happened while you were asleep? Taljaard agrees.

Was put to Op't Hof noise she heard was family watching Star Trek. You hear it? I was sleeping, so no. Didn't hear banging sounds

Taljaard didn't hear shouts for help, attacker laughing, or Teresa Van Breda asking what was going on, as per Henri's untested version.

Fact you didn't hear it, doesn't mean Mrs Op't Hof couldn't, Blows says. Taljaard agrees.

JJ I am sure you and others will remember from the OP case that neighbours either side often do not hear much. The sound waves spread in an arc away from the murder scene and often do not reach near neighbours (either side of building involved). I will see if I can dredge up the diagram of what happens to noise.

Door for Henri testifying is still wide open both in terms of keeping that option to Desai directly & in the "summarised" plea.

Judge asks whether there is any precedent for a case like this. Good question. Counsel seems to duck a direct response.

Jaco Pietersen, former security manager at De Zalze Estate, is Henri #VanBreda's fifth witness.

DM-OpUAX4AAyAe2.jpg

Adv Galloway objects to him testifying as his involvement at De Zalze ended in February 2014. Questions Pietersen's relevance.

Pietersen worked at De Zalze just over a year, as well as Thorburn. Previously worked for the SAPS

Francois Mouton was previous security manager. Marcia Rossouw, the current security manager, succeeded him

Adv Botha asks him about insufficient camera coverage, with only 35% of De Zalze's fencing under surveillance.

Zone 32 had a thermal rotating camera. Remotely monitored. 1 camera focused on Spier gate, river monitored by another camera.

Lists all the camera types and its positions at the time of his employment.

Fencing was a security concern because fence was old and not as effective as modern fencing, Pietersen says.

Bridge at Kleine Zalze river was also a concern as it allowed public access to restaurant and guest house, Pietersen says.

Second half of Pietersen's term they designed a gate to fit to river at crossing.Closed with electric fencing down to water level.

Pietersen is describing the security flaws throughout the Estate. One wonders if those areas have been addressed post-27/01/15?

Photos taken by Pietersen while employed at De Zalze. Showed typical damage to fence caused by the river.

During his tenure access cards were often lent to friends, family, staff. He had to address it often with residents,Pietersen says.

Pumphouse near R44 easy to climb and gain access to De Zalze before barbed wire installed, Pietersen says.

Pietersen says that there was a known issue with tenants lending out their access cards to friends, staff and family

In 2017, he photographed pumphouse from outside estate. Holes in base of fence.

Airfield gate had anti-dig foundation. Stops people, animals from digging underneath. Limited to residential, farm boundaries.
