South Africa - Nick Frischke, 22, tourist from Germany, doesn't speak English, Cape Town, 15 Feb 2023

  • #21
Hope is fast fading that missing German tourist Nick Frischke, 22, will be found alive after three of the five men arrested for being in possession of items belonging to him confessed to robbing and stabbing him.

However, Frischke’s family remain hopeful of his safe return.

Three of the suspects appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday where their case was rolled over to yesterday following their arrest over the weekend.

The trio allegedly admitted to robbing Frischke, with the Hout Bay Community Police Forum (CPF) reporting that Frischke’s backpack and cellphone were recovered, as well as a kitchen knife.

Two other suspects joined the trio and briefly appeared on Tuesday before Magistrate Goolam Bowa where the case was postponed to Monday for further investigation.

However, according to a report by a German broadcaster, RTL News, one of the three accused on Monday confessed to being involved in an attack on Frischke in Karbonkelberg which is a small peak forming part of the Table Mountain National Park. They claimed that one of their accomplices stabbed him.

CPF chairperson Anthony Chemaly said a search was planned for today. Residents had also planned a candlelight vigil, expected to be held for Frischke later today at Hout Bay Beach.

In an attempt to express their sympathy to the family, the local community on Monday staged a peace walk throughout the Hangberg area, while also encouraging the community to speak up.
Hangberg Dreams founder Zulfa October said since the news of Frischke’s disappearance, numerous searches were conducted to no avail.

I hope his family is being offered any support they need. Imagine this happening to your child who just wanted to explore another country. I hope anyone involved in harming him is found guilty and never released from prison. IMO.

Doesn't look or sound at all good from what we are hearing. Surely the suspects can say where they lrfthom if already admitted stabbing.

This (first illustration) is where he was hiking, and where the suspects say he was harmed by them. As the crow flies, he was 11 miles from where he was last seen at the V&L Waterfront. It seems possible that he was befriended and lured (driven) to the location near Hout Bay (where he was stabbed).

Looks like he might be in the water, which I suppose means that he may not be found.

Police said they have not called off the search for the missing German tourist who disappeared in the Western Cape over two weeks ago, but their search teams have been withdrawn for the moment.

Igshaan Fisher, Jason Abrahams, Vanroy Petersen, Carlo Guenantin and Melvin Guenantin have been charged with aggravated robbery after they were found in possession of Frischke’s belongings.

The suspects have pointed out the area where they say they robbed the man on the 15 February, but they claim he ran away. And he has been missing since.

I hope I'm wrong too, but if they were at the summit and they stabbed him, that might be how they decided to hide him.

The five Hangberg men arrested for possession of items belonging to the missing German tourist Nick Frischke have appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court, where their case was postponed to May 4 for further investigation.
Igshaan Fisher, Jason Abrahams, Vanroy Petersen, Carlo Guenantin, and Melvin Guenantin have been charged with aggravated robbery.

They were found in possession of items belonging to Frischke after a search was conducted by police a week after the 22-year-old’s disappearance. Their faces remained concealed as magistrate Bowa Goolam said there was an order made last Monday not to reveal their faces.

[...]

Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said the disappearance of Frischke was under investigation by experienced detectives assisted by uniformed members and other stakeholders, who are searching the area where he was last seen.

“Be advised that it is not in our nature to disclose information that is too close to the investigation or to come to any premature conclusions before the case has been finalised,” he said.

Swartbooi said secluded areas such as Hangberg had the potential to pose a risk, and urged the public to be cautious when visiting isolated areas or to do so in groups to avoid becoming a victim of crime.

What is the v&a waterfront?
It is a shopping centre with quite a few restaurants. It also offers a variety of boat excursions. It is quite an upmarket area with lots of tourists.

Not Alfred...but Albert! The Victoria & Albert Waterfront.

Queen Victoria was married to Prince Albert.

But this place is ALFRED! Who he?!

I refresh often, hoping that there's an update. Given the latest news, I had a reduced expectation that he would be found alive. Now, it looks like a question of whether he can be found.
I'm becoming doubtful they will find his body. The Atlantic ocean is at the bottom of all these cliffs, and that would seem the obvious place. I think he may have been beaten, knocked unconscious, robbed of his possessions and thrown in to the sea.

Cape Town - As searches for for missing German tourist Nick Frischke continue in and around the Hangberg area, the optimistic community of Döbern, his hometown in Germany, is planning a “March of Hope” for him on Sunday.
Frischke, 22, has been missing since February 14 and was last seen hiking alone on the Hangberg trail.

Since then, the community of Hangberg, organisations the NSRI, Western Cape Government Health EMS rescue squad drone team, Emergency Medical Services rescue squad trail search and rescue team, a police K9 search and rescue team and Wilderness Search and Rescue have searched but to no avail.

[...]

Frischke’s father Andre Hallwas said the Döbern community had 3 000 inhabitants who all knew each other.

“Since Nick was also active in the fire brigade, the people here were very affected and everyone wanted to help in some way. The March of Hope takes place because everyone is hoping for a miracle that Nick is still alive.

“Personally, I think this action is very good so that the people of Cape Town can see that we are all very affected but also helpless at the same time,” he said.

It’s a month since 22-year-old German tourist Nick Frischke went missing after setting off on a hike alone in Hangberg, Cape Town, on February 15.

Multiple search parties of community members, drones and sniffer dogs have turned up no leads on Frischke’s whereabouts.

[...]

The best piece of evidence to locate Frischke is the hiking app he reportedly used under the profile name, RunFire7, to find his way on the Sentinel trail above the Hangberg community. The app was opened a quarter of the way up the trail and was used regularly to try to stay on track.

TimesLIVE video has taken these co-ordinates and plotted them on a 3D map to show what could be Frischke’s final documented steps.
