As school year approaches, DHEC data still shows schools aren’t ready for in-person classes | WBTW

"As the school year approaches, DHEC data still shows schools aren’t ready for in-person classes. The recent disease activity data provided by DHEC every Monday is the data that Accelerate Ed recommends school districts follow when thinking about re-opening.

Accelerate Ed says schools should not re-open for in-person classes until the level of disease activity is “low” for the county the school district is in. As of the Monday update, every county in the state still has “high disease activity.”

SOUTH CAROLINA
Update - Wednesday, August 12

‘Wearing face masks works’ DHEC says as it announces 712 new COVID-19 cases, 45 more deaths in SC
"Also in Wednesday’s news release from DHEC, Dr. Linda Bell provided statistics about how well face masks work to help fight the spread. Since face requirements have gone into effect in many cities and counties in South Carolina, those areas have seen an overall decrease of 15.1% of total cases, compared to before the requirements were in place, DHEC said. Jurisdictions without mask requirements have seen an overall increase in total cases of 30.4% during the same time frame, according to DHEC data.

“We will be in a much better position in four to six weeks if South Carolinians practice physical distancing and use a mask,” Bell said. “The residents in jurisdictions that acted first are seeing the benefits earlier. This shows the sooner prevention measures are adopted, the sooner we all benefit.”

102,143 confirmed positive cases (+712)
Probable positive cases = 831

2,057 confirmed deaths (+45)
Probable deaths = 87

"Total Tests Received" - 857,773
Percent Positive - 19.6 %

Kershaw County Council votes against enforcing face mask mandate

This was one of the first counties in the state (maybe the first?) with a coronavirus case way back in early March

"But councilmember Tom Gardner, who proposed the ordinance, believes that dealing with enforcement is not the council’s job. "We are elected to take care of our constituents and health and well being is part of that," said Gardner.

Although this ordinance was voted down— the council members WIS spoke with did agree that everyone should wear a mask in public places.

"I told them last night at the meeting that I would much rather wear a mask for 60 days then a ventilator for two weeks," explained Gardner.
