Highlights of South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster's press conference on Friday afternoon, June 26:
  • McMaster says “we have to follow the rules,” strongly urges wearing masks
  • A plan is being formed to allow limited visiting at nursing homes for immediate family members only
  • McMaster: “Isolation causes unintended consequences”
  • McMaster says mandating masks is impractical, but strongly urges people wear them
  • McMaster says cities can impose their own mandates
  • McMaster is declaring a new state of emergency, says no further restrictions will be lifted until the rate of infection goes down
  • DHEC announces 1,273 new cases, and 1 new death, the second highest number of daily cases.
  • DHEC says 906 people are hospitalized, which is the highest rate seen yet.
  • Horry County has 82 new cases (Myrtle Beach area)
  • McMaster said he is not considering closing beaches again, saying it’s left up to the individual cities
  • DHEC recommends anyone who has been to the beach to get tested as they’ve “likely come in contact” with someone who is positive but asymptomatic.
  • Statewide hospital capacity is around 75%
