At this time, Investigators believe that this incident is isolated and there is no danger to the public. A homicide investigation by the Sheriff’s Office is continuing at this time.

I think they might have an idea who committed this crime.
Possibly a family member, wanting an early inheritance maybe,

Could also be someone that they have helped along the way!! Poor couple, sad and terrifying for them.

Hmm with their elderly ages and the mention of “Oconee” immediately Russell and Shirley Dermond came to mind… looks like Oconee County SC is roughly a 2 and a half hour drive (125 miles) from Lake Oconee in Putnam County GA where the Dermonds lived. Probably no connection of course but it’s always too tempting to make potential connections when there is a similar unsolved crime near (ish) by 🤷🏻‍♀️ I will say I never really take authorities at face value anymore when they say there is no threat to the public, I don’t think that statement alone indicates they have an idea who did this. We’ll see. RIP to poor Sandra and Larry 😟 (“traumatic injuries” ugh 😞)

The area appears quite rural with possibly only 2 residences on that road. There is also a church nearby.

This was my first thought as well. A weird coincidence.

The Dermond’s sprang into my mind instantly on reading this headline.

Ruled homicide. Found deceased.

Thanks for starting a thread for this.
I found it interesting that the sheriff did not want the coroner to comment on details of the traumatic injuries that caused their deaths.
My first thought was that LE has a suspect in mind, like others have suspected.
Their house is not isolated but definitely rural. It is pretty much right next to Chau Ram Park. That would open up the question of if a stranger visiting the park might have seen them and thought they would be an easy mark. My husband and I have been there before. It is fairly popular with hiking trails etc.
I’ll add, Oconee County SC is not very close and has little in common with Lake Oconee GA other than the name.

Thank you for pointing out the differences between Oconee in SC and GA and making the point about the Chau Ram Park.

Yes the proximity of both the park and the church to their house seems like there would loads of strangers orbiting fairly close to their home fairly regularly

Thanks for starting this thread. Oconee is one of the nicest outdoor areas in this state with several cold cases on their books so I hate to think of another threat on the loose in those hills.

It's lovely up there, love the scenic Hwy 11 drive. I hope they have some leads on this!
