Murder investigation launched following disappearance of father and son in Spain

The disappearance of a father and son in the Costa del Sol is being treated as a murder investigation, police have confirmed.

Daniel Poole, 46, and Liam Poole, 22, went missing after travelling to Malaga in March 2019 to play golf and look at holiday homes.

The pair from Burgess Hill checked into a hotel but had not been heard from since.

More than three years on from their disappearance, police have told the families of both that they are now treating the case as a homicide investigation.

Sussex Police claim that Spanish authorities are no longer investigating the disappearance of the pair.

A police spokesman said: “We are taking legal steps to take the primacy of the investigation as the Spanish are no longer investigating the disappearance of Danny and Liam Poole.

This! I am surprised that some people are surprised there are no answers five years later. It is that type of world, plenty of practice, so they leave no trace. This is not a British tourists gone missing case; far from it.

Arrests
Two arrests have been made by UK police investigating the case of a father and son who disappeared in Spain more than five years ago.

Daniel Poole and his son Liam, from Burgess Hill, travelled to Malaga in 2019 and a decision to treat their disappearance as a murder investigation was made by Sussex Police in 2022.

On Wednesday, the force said two men had been arrested, questioned, and released under investigation pending further inquiries.

An appeal for witnesses is still ongoing and detectives are offering a £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and charge of any person responsible for the pair's disappearance.
A man in his 30s from West Sussex and another in his 40s from the Merseyside area were both arrested on suspicion of the murders of Danny and Liam, Sussex Police said.

Wow, I’m so pleased to see there is movement towards justice for Daniel and Liam. I have to say, I didn’t expect these arrests to happen in the UK. I expected them to be in Spain or elsewhere in Europe. I do wonder if these were trusted acquaintances and something all went horribly wrong.
