Family launch appeal for 23-year-old Brit missing in Madrid

A family in the UK have launched a desperate appeal to the public to help locate Nixon Smith who has not been heard of since catching a flight to Madrid on November 19th.

Missing posters have been issued by family and friends in the hope that someone may have spotted the 23-year-old on the streets of the capital and tell them that he’s safe.

"As far as we know he has no reason to run away or go into hiding and has no previous history of living on the streets," his friend Hollie Jones told The Local.

"He was previously in Malaga on holiday before he flew into Madrid on 19 November and went missing. He doesn't speak Spanish."

Nixon was due to fly home to Birmingham after being issued with an emergency passport at the British Consulate in Malaga following a robbery which left him without belongings, funds or a phone.
It has been confirmed that he took a flight from Malaga to Madrid but did not take the connecting flight to Birmingham ten hours later.

The appeal state he may be “distressed, confused and not instantly recognisable”.

Mr. Smith is said to have dark brown hair, green eyes and is 1.80m. According to his family, he has an ear, nose, eyebrow and lip piercing and a tattoo on his upper left arm.

Smith did not use his emergency passport on a connecting flight from Madrid to Birmingham. Smith is believed to still be in Madrid.

I wonder why they think he’s distressed. Just because of circumstances-robbed in a foreign country? Or because of a sighting of him appearing distressed? More info would go a long way here.

His brother Jake made an appeal on his Facebook page, asking anyone who has any information to help his family locate Nixon.

'I’m writing this because Its my birthday today & as much of a free spirit my brother is he loves his family. I’ve had no contact, hence the need for this status,' he wrote.

Nixon has dark brown hair, green eyes, is slim and 1.80m (5ft 11) tall.

His family said he has an ear, nose, eyebrow and lip piercing, as well as a tattoo on his upper left arm.

The appeal says: 'We believe he is still in Madrid. Uncharacteristic of him not to have made contact. Nixon may be distressed, confused and not instantly recognisable.

'Please get in touch if you have any information that may help or have any possible sightings, we just want to know he is safe and ok.'

As it says above, he has failed to make contact on his brother's birthday. That's an event that even a free spirit won't miss, and signals something is very wrong.

There may have been CCTV of him, or just the speculation that the reason for his not contacting his brother is that he's distressed/confused. If he were completely in his right mind, he would have remembered to email his brother.

Hunt for missing Brit tourist not seen for 22 days since he was mugged in Spain

Heartbroken parents have made an emotional plea for the return of their son who has been missing in Spain for 22 days.

Nixon Smith, 23, missed his flight home from Madrid on November 19 after he was mugged and lost all his possessions.

Now, his panicked parents Diane Smith, 50 and Dave, 52, are "worried his sick" about the Geography graduate.

Surely he was seen in surveillance video at the airport. Was he seen leaving the airport? Getting into a taxi or Uber?

Maybe the footage was already erased? Although I would think that an airport would keep surveillance footage for a while.

I think it's not likely he got a taxi, did he even have any money after being robbed? Does the embassy provide some cash in a such a situation (together with the emergency passport)? Or maybe his parents wired him some. Would be good to know.

Uber also unlikely since his phone was stolen too.

I wonder if he knows someone in Madrid and decided to go see them.

It has been confirmed that he took a flight from Malaga to Madrid but did not take the connecting flight to Birmingham ten hours later.

Flier says he landed in Madrid at 22.32 pm. His connecting flight was 10 hours later. Not a stretch to assume he left the airport to find a room to sleep. But where and what happened next? Again, it would be helpful to know if he had any cash on him to pay for transport, a room, and food.

I'm very surprised there's no Spanish flier readily circulated! Many Spanish people don't speak English at all.

Does he have a keen interest, talent or passion? Maybe there's something in Madrid he wanted to see or do.

Was his holiday in Malaga cut short because of the robbery? Maybe, when he arrived in Madrid he realized he wasn't ready yet to go back home and decided to stay on. Maybe he didn't want to disappoint his family who might have arranged for the flight home, so he didn't call them?

Just my speculation.

I feel it might have been airport security cameras recorded him going off in the dark and so they searched and his body was found outdoors around the airport, somewhere no one goes in the winter.
