But he could have been born in Scotland or Ireland, are there records?
I've searched Scotland and Ireland and drew a blank

If he was born anywhere outside the UK but in a British family, then they migrated back to the UK when he was still a child, or even as an adult, he would still be British, no? But no birth records in the UK.
Of course you may be right. I'm throwing all possible scenarios into the mix. I find it odd that I can find no footprint for the man inside the UK at all

Which sites do you use to search Scotland / Ireland records?

Thanks Sar! Isn't it just the weirdest thing? I have never not found a single footprint. Even "Steven F Allford" brings up zero google results which is so odd.

Could the name be misspelled? (for example Stephen Alford) You have probably taken this into account already. If so, ignore! :)

Not necessarily. British citizenship has always been automatically passed on through a father, however citizenship has only automatically passed through a mother since 1983. People born to British mothers and foreign fathers before that date can apply for citizenship through the mother, but they do have to actively apply.

Given his age, he could have been born to British parents in one of the colonies in which case there wouldn't be a birth registration in this country.

Bizarre tale. I knew the Daily Mail would be all over it.

I'm not a big fan but they're usually the first to report "gossip" and almost always have the most photos!

They also say:

It is not known where in the UK Mr Allford was originally from, although he is believed to have spent some time living in Spain.
Investigators have discovered he has a conviction for fraud from a court in Catalunya.
The prison the unnamed Finnish suspect has been sent to - Alhaurin de la Torre near Malaga- is understood to be the jail Mr Allford also served part of his sentence in after being convicted.

Surprising the Daily Mail haven't located where in the UK he is from. They're normally the first to comment on the price of any home he's lived in

I know, I was going to mention house prices! We need the tradition DM "sad face" pics too. It's very mysterious, seems we're not the only ones struggling to find out who he is. I wouldn't be surprised, given the nature of the situation, if his family have requested privacy. It seems likely he's estranged from family/friends if he was homeless in Spain. He might have no family. We might never find out.

I'm surprised the Finnish guy is charged with manslaughter. SA died from choking on his own vomit after too much to drink. Are they saying, had Finnish guy not tied him to the bench the choking might not have happened? Was he tied in such a way that the vomit could not come out of his mouth? Or are they saying Finnish guy forced the alcohol into SA? What is the manslaughter charge for?

I read (can't remember where) that that manslaughter charge was because he was tied up prior to death. Ergo he wouldn't have choked if he wasn't tied up in that position

Thank you sar! I hope they can prove that. Defense might argue he would have choked anyway.

Ooh i remembered reading bout this in the dm in the last week, never thought to check here!!! Thanks cags!

My inlaws live in marbella, so we fly in and out of malaga every school hols, so at least 6 times a year. I have never once seen anyone outwith the airport, I dunno how to quite word this but remotely dodgy or homeless looking. But it really can be very quiet in the surrounding area, even in the height of summer.

A very bizarre and sad story, why would you tie someone to a bench?

"The British tramp found dead with ham on his naked buttocks and his genitals in a tuna can may have been targeted following a row over food, investigators now believe.

Steven Allford was found face down and bound to a bench near Malaga airport on October 21.

A specialist prosecutor had agreed to investigate the bizarre case after a homeless group said it could be a hate crime based on victimisation of vagrants.

But the arrest of a giant Finnish vagrant on suspicion of Mr Allford's manslaughter has led to new clues which investigators are pursuing in the hope of unraveling the bizarre end to his life."
