A recent Islamic State document includes a list of grievances against Spain for wrongs done to Muslims since the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa on July 16, 1212, when the Christian forces of King Alfonso VIII of Castile routed the Almohad Muslim rulers of the southern half of the Iberian Peninsula. More than 100,000 Muslims were killed in the battle, which was a key victory in the Catholic Monarchs' "Reconquista" of Spain.

The document said that since the establishment of the Spanish Inquisition in 1478, Spain "has done everything to destroy the Koran." It said that Spain tortured Muslims, including burning them alive. Therefore, according to the Islamic State, "Spain is a criminal state that usurps our land." The document calls on jihadists to "reconnoiter airline and train routes for attacks." It also calls on followers to "poison food and water" with insecticides.

The document concludes: "The actions of your ancestors are the reason for our actions today."

Hateful beliefs do not differentiate between skin color , religion, etc.

White supremacists are horrific. I know someone who tried to help a person like that leave his beliefs -- because his ideology was not only hurting himself but could lead to further acts of violence.

Sounds like a fantasy... but I wish we could put everyone who carries out violence because of their hateful beliefs and exile them to an island where they cannot hurt innocents and have to just deal with each other.

The restaurant is called Luna de Istanbul. This is a small Turkish restaurant on Carrer Tallers, located close to La Boqueria Market.

Witnesses on the ground reported that two men linked to the attack headed into the restaurant.

Initial reports suggested that the armed men took hostages in the restaurant, but police have since dismissed the claim.

Euhmm... no. They have been going at this for years. Barcelona and the Catalunya region are a hotbed of Salafism and Salafism provides both the mental and physical support for Jihadism.

Spanish Police and Secret Services have done a tremendous job in preventing terrorist attacks. The last big islamist attack was on March 11, 2004, the Madrid train bombings by Al Qaeda. 192 people were killed.

Police officials have suggested there could be a connection between the Barcelona attack and two explosions earlier in the day in a house in Alcanar, a small town in Tarragona about 100km south of Barcelona, in which one person died and 16 people were injured, including police and firefighters who were investigating the first explosion and were hit by a second blast. The explosions had initially been reported as gas explosions.
