'Search for more vans'

The New York Times reports that three vans had been rented under Driss Oukabar's name.

Barcelona police were frantically searching for the two other vans, combing the streets and underground parking garages, a national police official told the paper.

It is not known if one of the vans was used in the Cambrils attack.

A counterterrorism expert, who was briefed on the details of the investigation, told the Times the police believed the plot initially involved the use of explosives and a large truck.

“Part of the plan was they tried to rent a larger truck, but they didn’t have the right permit and so they ended up getting” smaller vans, said the expert.

Nationalities of victims

The injured and dead came from 24 different countries, the Catalan government said on Friday in a statement, ranging from France and Germany to Pakistan and the Philippines.

Belgium said one of its citizens had died in the Las Ramblas assault, while The Hague said three Dutch were injured and a Greek diplomat reported three nationals had been wounded - a woman and her two children.

In Australia, Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop confirmed that four Australians had been hurt in the attack, while one person is missing.

With video here, civilians filming and staring at dead terrorists.
Listen to the man's voice, he is swearing in disbelief, telling that the perps are wearing explosives, there are two, there's another one ....

https://youtu.be/q-nlbgViaMk

It sounds like or seems like the police quickly honed in on the network responsible here and when they did, these guys tried to go out with a bang, and using suicide vests or belts tried to blow others up. Happily, they were unsuccessful.

This shows us once again how these maniacs are always already on the radar of the intelligence and LE communities in Europe. They know quickly who to go to when something like this happens. I just don't understand why they can't effectively deal with these creeps before they commit terror.

"Tío" used in Spain in the way the guy on the video was using it is kind of like"dude" but more derogatory.

I'm happy none of my family lives in Barcelona. It's quite scary.

Also, I saw a post by KZ about how Barcelona is very liberal and welcomes refugees. That's pretty much all of Western Europe. Refugees are unlikely to be to blame for this. The Muslim
cmunity IMMEDIATELY spoke out against this atrocity and it is horrific that there exists a population of monstrous terrorists among the Muslim population who are mostly peaceful.

"A nurse has described the horror of trying to save a little boy's life in the Barcelona terror attack.

The man, named only in reports as Albert, was near Las Ramblas when a van ploughed through the crowds of pedestrians at speed.

He told Nice Matin newspaper: "I saw about eight or nine dead on the ground.

"I am a nurse and with a doctor we tried to resuscitate a little boy but it was no longer possible... It was chaos.

Tio means uncle and tia means aunt.
Apparently, there is also another usage of tio in Spain, like in the US someone might call someone else "brother," "bro" or "sister" although they're not related. In this case, Gitana said that the term tio has a more negative connotation. That is just my understanding. I didn't view the video.

I was just watching the news on CNN. They said a third arrest has been made but it's not the driver. He's still on the run.

Morning all. My head is still buzzing with last nights news. I forgot to thank you all for your contributions, I guess I was too busy. So THANK YOU ALL! :takeabow:

Today is Friday, and Friday is an evil day, even more so after afternoon prayer.

Let's hope LE manages to thwart whatever plans there may be.

Meanwhile, can this thread be moved to rampage killings an terrorist attacks? Coz' that is where it belongs.

Thank you for your contributions to the thread ZaZara. I hope this cell doesn't have more attacks planned too. Something needs to be done about these monsters being able to hire vans around the world. Though what can be done I don't know. They also need to consider road blocks in this part of Barcelona too to prevent a recurrence of this tragedy in future. However unfortunately I know it is impossible to totally prevent an attack like this from happening.

First victim named

The first victim to be named in the Barcelona attack was an Italian father of two.

Bruno Gulotta was on holiday with his partner and two children, according to his workmates at Tom’s Hardware.

The company’s Facebook page said it was in mourning.

The Telegraph adds:

Gulotta was crushed to death on the Ramblas by the terrorist lorry while strolling down the Ramblas hand in hand with his five-year-old son who his wife, Martina, managed to snatch to safety in the nick of time, she was quoted as telling friends.

Martina was following her husband carrying their seven-month-old baby girl, Aria, in a rucksack she was wearing on her chest when Bruno was run down, la Repubblica newspaper quoted her telling his workmates.

Martina grabbed their son Alessandro, aged five, and rushed both children to safety but Gulotta, aged 35, was killed instantly."

May Bruno Gulotta Rest In Peace

There were allegedly 12 of them, five down, three in custody including the brother who says he has nothing to do with it. That means 6 or 7 still on the run.

Think about that! Their MO is what Gilles Kepel calls 'third-wave jihadism'. Low-tech, horizontal killing sprees. Long term aim: civil war.

If they have another van, some gas canisters and are willing to go to paradise, they may attack anywhere at any moment. No happy prospect, not happy at all.

Driss' brother appears to be the central person of interest:

This is Moussa Oukabir (18), brother of a detainee. The Mossos search for him as the author of the attack in Barcelona.

Moussa Oukabir allegedly drove the van in Barcelona.

What we know so far

Kevin Rawlinson
The death toll of the attacks in Spain has risen to 14 people; two of whom have been named: Bruno Gulotta, a father of two, with and 44-year-old Elke Vanbockrijck from the Belgian town of Tongeren.

Spanish police are searching for Moussa Oukabir, who they believe was driving the van in the Barcelona attack. He is the younger brother of Driss Oukabir - one of three people arrested by police thus far.

The UK Foreign Office confirmed it was helping a “small number” of British citizens caught up in the Barcelona attack, though it would not say whether they had been injured.

Here is what we know about the related terror attacks that took place on Thursday and Friday:

Cambrils
A second terror attack took place in Cambrils, a coastal town around 120km from Barcelona, in the early hours of Friday morning.

One person was killed and five bystanders and one police officer were injured – two seriously – when they were reportedly deliberately hit by a car.
The attackers were wearing fake suicide vests according to Catalan officials cited by El Pais.

The Audi A3 used in the Cambrils attack was removed by police. Its back window was smashed and it was lying upside down.

Police officers shot dead five suspects, some of whom were wearing what appeared to be explosive belts.

Javier Zaragoza, the head of the Audiencia Nacional, the court that deals with terror offences, said on Friday that those killed had no known links to jihadism.

Barcelona

The first victim of the Barcelona attack was named as Italian father-of-two, Bruno Gulotta. He was on holiday with his partner and children, according to his workmates.

Spanish police are hunting teenager Moussa Oukabir, who is suspected of being the driver of the van in the Barcelona attack.

A minute’s silence was held in Barcelona’s main square, followed by several minutes of applause. Spain’s king Felipe its prime minister Mariano Rajoy attended. A minute’s silence was also held at the EU buildings in Brussels.

A seven-year-old Australian boy, Julian Cadman, became separated from his mother, who is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Authorities say the Cambrils attack is linked to the terrorist assault on Barcelona on Thursday, when a man drove a van into pedestrians in Las Ramblas, killing 13 people and injuring 100 more.

Two suspects arrested on Thursday are being held on suspicion of links to the Barcelona attack, but police say neither of them is the driver.

A second van that was believed to have been used as a getaway vehicle for the Barcelona attacker was found abandoned in Vic, 80km away.

Isis has claimed responsibility for the attack in Las Ramblas, but this could not be verified.

Alcanar

Officials are also linking the two attacks to an earlier explosion that destroyed a house in Alcanar, killing one person and wounding at least one more. Police now say they believe explosives were being prepared at the property.

Alcanar is around 200km (124 miles) from Barcelona and 90km (56 miles) from Cambrils.
Sant Just Desvern
On Thursday, a shootout at a police roadblock in a town close to Barcelona left a man dead. Police said it was not connected to the attack in Las Ramblas.

On Friday morning, it emerged that the dead man – the owner of the car – was not in the driver’s seat and had in fact been stabbed to death.

A hunt is now underway for the person driving the car to the roadblock.
It is possible that this incident is also linked to the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, and the explosion in Alcanar

THIS IS MOHAMMED HOULI, WOUNDED IN DE EXPLOSION IN ALCANAR THAT PRECIPITATED THE ATTACKS

The explosions of Thursday night at a house in Alcanar (Tarragona) that the terrorist cell used as a laboratory, left several injured, including Mohamed Houli Chemlal (20), a native of Melilla. This fact would have been decisive, according to sources of the anti-terrorism forces, for the jihadistas to precipitate their plans and to attack in Las Ramblas of Barcelona and in Cambrils.

In the social network for young, named Kiwi there is evidence that Mohamed Houli and Moussa Oukabir (17 years) know each other. And it so happens that Moussa, Driss's brother (the detainee in the Girona town of Ripoll), the alleged perpetrator of the massacre in the center of Barcelona, is placed by police sources, at the wheel of the van that has left the at least 13 dead and 80 wounded.

As for him, Mohamed Houli also resides in Ripoll and is not unknown to the locals of the municipality. There he studied at the Abat Oliba Public Institute and has also played in the Ripoll Soccer School team. He responds, therefore, to a profile of someone fully integrated in Catalan society.

At the same time, Mohamed Houli was responsible for renting one of the vans linked to the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils (Tarragona), as the Interior Minister of the Catalan Generalitat, Joaquim Forn, reported on Friday.

Along with this, the councillor has explained that there could be a relationship of "kinship" between Houli and the five terrorists killed by the Mossos in Cambrils. In this sense, he has detailed that the kinship is not on of family, but that he can not establish the specific treatment between the different components of the terrorist cell.

Speaking to Cadena Ser, Forn also has told that it is under investigation if there were explosives in the house of Alcanar in which the explosion occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning. In addition, although he did not want to detail a lot of information due to the "maximum discretion" required by the investigation, he affirmed that they are carrying out searches in "addresses in different locations in Catalonia".

In this Kiwi network, Moussa Oukabir, the friend of Mohamed Houli, wrote two years ago: "On your first day as absolute queen / king of the world, what would you do? - Kill the unfaithful. I only let live Muslims who follow the religion"

Evil has many faces, for instance this sweet babyface ....
IMHO it is next to a miracle that he survived the explosion. There was not much left of that house. Only one corner was still standing, the rest was rubble.
