GUILTY Spain - Van plows into city center in Barcelona, injuries reported in "massive crash", Aug 2017

  • #221
There are conflicting info about him being located safe. Apparently, he had been cared by Social Services.
Antena3 gave this info, but was disproved.

Need to wait for confirmation (following news in Spanish, helps my learning)

In the meantime, we can't rule out he's in care with the local Social Services and LE is too busy with the chaotic situation.
Or local Child and Adolescent psych wards.

Same for the other missing children: can't rule out that they are entrusted to local Social Services or C&A psych ward

Social services aren't childsnatchers they'd tell LE if they had any children that were picked up in the immediate area.

There are plans in place for the aftermath of terrorist attacks which include police working with social services so people can be reunited asap.

My issue with this is I think missing posters released just after terrorist attacks can start rumours and this can lead to false hope. False hope breaks my heart :(

Hi Hat

were seasoned - quietly we all know what we are trying to share with one another is gonna be crazy

I bounce around during a breaking but its madness

BUT (compared to CNN ) CNN does not correct stuff -- basic stuff - for ages

I learned this years ago from being with you all

amc nbc msnbc etc etc update basic core facts

i took jounalism courses at the BA level

who what when where why core

I get misinformation but from being here -- we get it cleared out by 24 hours , so does the rest of the media meanwhile CNN is still reporting wrong who what when wheres WRONG

They are good IMO for when it is just breaking in terms of getting video but when it turns into the confussion place they end up efffing everyihing up

that is fine -- what has so turned me off to them is they dont catch up generally

MSNBC abc nbc cbs etc are far better on updating imo a big breaking story

(CNN is the worst...I learned that here too with you guys in the MH370 threads, which BTW there are updates)

True.
However, the time children identities to be checked can take a few days. In the meantime, the situation is quite chaotic, LE being overwhelmed by the work to do.
Remember, Spain is not the US !!

There are plans in place for the aftermath of terrorist attacks which include police working with social services so people can be reunited asap.
Hope you are right. However, in a similar situation in Paris, it took a few days to reunite a child with his family after being separated. Sure, Social Services told LE asap, but checking identities is what took longest.
LE doing their best in a very chaotic situation. Remember, Spain is not the US, so such check might be very swift in the US, slower in an European country.
Spain is not US !!

My issue with this is I think missing posters released just after terrorist attacks can start rumours and this can lead to false hope. False hope breaks my heart :(
That's why I always check with MSM and legitimate not for profit associations. Antena3 is a Spanish mainstream media and SOS Desaparecidos is the DN's Spanish partner.
In Spain, contrary to the US, you have to be authorized by the police to release a missing person poster when you are a MSM or a not for profit organization. If the Catalan police authorized the release, they have very good reasons to do so. They might even have asked the release themselves.
Reasons we can't know from behind our computers.

Had it been a missing poster from Facebook without any check by the police and a very legitimate Spanish not for profit organization, that would had been a very different story.

I hear that it breaks your heart, but if the police and legitimate sources authorize the release, they have very serious reasons for making such decision.
Also, I know that Spanish LE work very hard in a very complicated situation, but they have different rules than the US. So, it is certainly not as swift as you expect, not because Social Services are child snatchers who want to keep the children for themselves, but because the procedures and policies for identity checks can take time.
They do as quickly as possible, but it can take up to one week to complete all the necessary checks in such a chaotic situation. (from what I lived after Paris attacks, it took even two weeks to identify all people hospitalized under X)

The California man who was separated from his wife in the chaotic moments of Thursday's terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain, was among the 13 killed at the scene, his family said Friday.

The father of 42-year-old Jared Tucker told NBC News that Tucker's wife, Heidi Nunes, confirmed her husband's death. The Walnut Creek couple were in Europe celebrating their first wedding anniversary and had just enjoyed drinks on Barcelona's wide, largely pedestrianized tourist street of La Rambla when their relaxing vacation was shattered by sharp cries.

BARCELONA SECURITY REFUSED TO PROTECT VULNERABLE 'RAMBLAS' WITH BOLLARDS FOLLOWING NICE AND BERLIN ATTACK

Daily Mail
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4802344/Barcelona-security-chiefs-REJECTED-barriers.html

Barcelona security chiefs rejected calls last year to install barriers at Las Ramblas to protect pedestrians from an attack by terrorists in a vehicle, it emerged today.

The Catalan interior ministry and police chiefs recommended that Barcelona City Hall install massive bollards to protect the boulevard - following similar attacks in Berlin and Nice.

(...) they opted instead to increase police presence on Las Ramblas and other vulnerable areas.

And it came in spite of reports the CIA had specifically warned that Las Ramblas could be a target for an attack.

BBM

Everybody seems to love Barcelona, but Barcelona does not love you back!

In the words of mayor Ada Colau: 100% security does not exist!
The question was about bollards, not about 100% security.
One look at the Berlin Christmas market, one look at the Nice attack would have been enough to see that both atrocities could have been prevented with those massive bollards.

Yet you and your loved ones were free to risk your life on the Ramblas in Barcelona.

BTW the terrorists had wanted to hire a truck instead of a van, but they did not manage to hire one. And they fumbled a bit with the propane cylinders. So, in a way, Barcelona got off lightly because things could have gotten a lot worse.

TATP, 'THE MOTHER OF SATAN' FOUND IN THE RUINS OF THE HOUSE IN ALCANAR

El Pais
https://politica.elpais.com/politic.../1503081839_345646.html?id_externo_rsoc=TW_CM

Investigators combing the ruins of the house that exploded last Wednesday in Alcanar (Tarragona), alleged base of operations of the now disarmed terrorist group, have found traces of the explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP), better known as the mother of Satan.

The finding reinforces the thesis that the terrorist group that has caused 14 deaths in Barcelona and Cambrils had plans to commit more extensive attacks. Among the pieces of rubble, beams and butane gas bottles, the Mossos have detected samples of TATP. The remains of the explosive point to the frustrated intentions of the terrorists to carry out attacks with deflagrations whose impact would have surpassed the current number of victims.

TATP is an explosive commonly used by members of the Islamic State deployed in Europe, found in attacks such as Brussels, Paris or 7-J in London. The mother of Satan can have two aspects: dry and powdery, which causes it to be extremely unstable, or gelled with water or acetone, which makes it more stable.

The three basic compounds of TATP are acetone, hydrogen peroxide and sulfuric acid, products that can be purchased at any drugstore. Their preparation may take days, but it is simple, according to experts iof the anti terrorist units.

I'm so sorry to read the updated number of fatalities and huge number of injured. They and their families are in my thoughts and prayers. Thank you for the updates I'm in hospital with a bad kidney infection so haven't been able to watch the news networks I would be able to at home.

I hope you heal quickly! I've been in the hospital this last week, too. [emoji173]️

and Greg, I am always glad that you so often can put faces with the names of victims. it makes these awful stories more real-life, as awful as that can be at times .... but not just a distant news article that can be ignored.

They need to do everything they possibly can reasonably do to protect their own citizens and tourists. The police are not going to be able to prevent this kind of murderous attack in the future. I hope the people of Barcelona insist on changes being made by their government.

Thank you Spellbound for your kind good wishes. I think it is important to focus on the victims as people with names, faces and families of their own and not have them be remembered solely for how they died. It is very difficult reading and posting about the victims of these terrible tragedies especially the children.

Acetone!!! Short story: Small Beauty Supply shop a block from my home, owned and run by foreigners (Eastern). I went in one day to buy nail polish remover and they said they were out. I thought that was very strange. Makes me very suspicions.

One Canadian has died and four others have been injured, Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister, has said in a statement.

We join Spain and countries around the world in grieving the senseless loss of so many innocent people. We must stand firm against the spread of hate and intolerance in all its forms. These violent acts that seek to divide us will only strengthen our resolve.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/l...-terror-attack-suspects-killed-latest-updates

There are so many victims nationalities involved it truly is a global attack affecting so many families and countries.

It is very easy to get a hold of by these prospective terrorists a trip to the beauty supply store, then the hardware store and follow the online ISIS step by step bomb making recipe guide and anyone can make a bomb.

Greg, a thank you from me too for showing us the names and faces of the victims! I read there are three Germans among those affected, but last time I checked their names were not released and it wasn't clear whether they had died or were injured. If you come across any more info please post it (as I will too if I find something). I'm German and I keep thinking of my three fellow Germans.

The Italian foreign ministry identified the second Italian killed as Luca Russo, who was on holiday with his fiancée. She was injured but was not in serious condition.

He was from Bassano Grappa in the northern province of Treviso and worked at a company in Padua.

Both Luca and his girlfriend Marta Scomazzon were volunteers at the Green Cross, according to local police.

According to local media, he was 25 years old and was an engineering graduate.
