Steven Powell was involved in disappearance

Where was Susan during this visit? Do her friends remember Steve coming to town?

What IF he did come to town, but he didn't even visit. What IF his sole purpose for coming was to search and find a spot to put Susan's body? What IF once he found said spot, Josh met him out there while Susan was at work/ boys were in daycare? He may have even provided Josh with the poison at that time (if poison was used).

I have also been thinking about Josh's trip to the point of the mountain after he was informed that the police were at his house. Could he have also been getting rid of his clothes at that time?

I am trying to remember WHO took josh to get the rental car. There was something about josh at a parking lot when he was stopped with the van, by LE, and then someone picked him up. Didn't Peterson take him to drop the car back to the rental office and that's when his hands were all red?

Sorry to quote my own post but I had some more thoughts to add.

I hope that details come out that may help solve where she is. One thing I am curious about is WHY josh rented the car; WHO had the conversation with him that they took him to get the car at the rental place. Was he insistent on renting a car when offered rides or the use of a friend's vehicle. Was he shifty at that time or acting his normal jerkiness. Did he seem troubled or panicky or moody? Peterson spoke about the red hands and him applying copious amounts of lotion to them but what was josh's demeanor right before he got the rental. What physical condition was he in? Soon after blue cap video came out, we speculated elsewhere that his left eye looked all red, like it may have been scratched or something. This was 'before red hands'.

Just a side note about car rentals . . . whenever I have had to emergently rent a car (ie: car broke down or wreck) the rental company comes to pick me up where I am . . . drives me back to their office to fill out paperwork and then I go on my way. The only time I need a ride from someone is when I turn the rental car back in.

Hm... now you've got me thinking about that supposed sledding outing earlier that evening. Remember? He is said to have taken the boys sledding on some local hills?

Curiouser and curiouser.

Steve Powell skipped work a day after Susan disappeared

Steve Powell’s two sick days coincide with his son renting a car and putting 800 miles on it.

According to search warrants unsealed by a Washington judge on Friday, Josh Powell called his father at 12:14 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, 2009, about the same time Susan and their sons Charlie, then 4, and Braden, then 2, returned home from church.

JoVanna Owings, a neighbor, spent that afternoon with Susan at the Powell’s home and joined the family for a late pancake and egg brunch prepared by Josh Powell. After the meal, Susan said she was tired and needed a nap. Owings left, as did Josh Powell, who said he was taking their boys sledding.

A neighbor saw the Powell’s van return about 8:30 p.m. that night. Josh Powell later told police he left again around 12:30 a.m. to take his sons camping in Utah’s west desert, leaving Susan at home.

I find this really interesting:
"The day after Susan was reported missing, Josh Powell rented a car at the Salt Lake City airport. He returned it two days later, having driven it more than 800 miles."

Does it seem weird to anyone else that he rented a car from the "airport"? Usually the airport is a long way to drive to . . . the rentals are always more expensive @ the airport than one in town. Did Josh meet anyone at the airport that day and time? (ie: SP, or Michael?) Why the airport? Why not a local (in his neighborhood) rental?

Some hotels in the area will offer free shuttles to the airport if you are staying there. I know of people who just show up in the lobby of certain hotels near Sea-Tac and jump on the shuttle without anyone batting an eye (they use that for a friend to drop them off and pick them up without staying at the hotel).

This airport car rental is real HINKY! (IMO)

Encrypted drive is a challenge, I know many who would try or may have knowledge of how to. LE could make copies of that drive if their stumped and make it public. They may not want the contents public but what's the choice here if it were cracked.

Just my impression of glossing over post here, SP had motive and opportunity.
I don't think this will stump the FBI, as I stated earlier in this thread- the FBI has a cyber-crime division, I know someone who works in it! Not necessary to hire the public...

I believe it was Jen or Kirk who took him to get the rental and it was Peterson who took him to pick it up...and then stated his hands were very red and he kept putting lotions on them. It was then also that he kept talking about what he had to re-purchase because LE took them. ie: phone, comforter, etc.

I have taken a step back now and am really questioning why all this info is coming out with sightings, investigation into MP, AP, etc...and focus switching to SP since JP offed himself? Why not this attention to SP as a POI from LE? Were they really thinking he was a POI from the beginning....and if so, why did it take until last summer (8/11) for any search warrants? From 12/9? Why not put all the pressure on the Powell 'clan' way before the honk and wave?

What is really going on?

I think LE are on to something and are keeping it close. IMO

I think the point that some posters were trying to make was "encryption cracking" can be so elusive that even the FBI are unable to do it after spending months trying. . . (ie: Duncan/Shasta G kidnapping & murder of Dylan). Some of the posters here have those skills and would like to offer their help in assisting with trying to ensure the files are able to be accessed.

The hope is that LE consider using the talents of volunteers who are willing, able and committed to cracking the encryption. We all have the same goal . . . and there are many paths to the top of the mountain. So far, we have not heard that the FBI was able to crack the encryption. People in the "know" about these matters have commented that it really can be nearly impossible to get the exact sequence and the exact keys perfectly to break the code.

There are other posters who believe FBI can do anything and we should not question their ability. I understand both sides - but I really lean toward using all of the resources available. At this point . . . I doubt it could harm the case against Josh in any way. He is gone and only Susan and the truth are left to be found.

One of my earliest thoughts was SP did meet JP that evening during the "sledding trip" and then hid in the van for the trip back into the home. Question is did the kids see him? Could the kids actually recognize him--if they did ---since he apparently wasn't a welcome Gmpa and so far away? BUT, could it have been another family member...since LE is saying he was in WA on the 7th?

I hope the FBI cyber-crimes division gets to it. I'm not sure why it hasn't been done by now. I was thinking the FBI could do it too, am I impatient?

BBM The airport would give him more anonymity, it's a busier place and counter people might not remember details. Also, they didn't live that far from the airport.

Over the weekend, I saw a show on the case of Nashville lawyer Perry March, who was eventually convicted of killing his wife, who was threatening to divorce him and take the kids. He killed his wife and hid her in the woods nearby. Then his father came and picked up the body, along with bloody clothes, etc., and drove them to Kentucky where he says he put them in a pile of brush that was being cleared for burning. Both got away with it a long time. Perry also up and moved with the kids almost immediately after his wife's disappearance. Perry also claimed she ran away with another man.

Note that this case would have been in the news prior to Susan's disappearance. I remember it being all over various news programs. With JP's love of CSI-type shows, he might very likely have heard of it. Did he and his father devise a new and improved version of this crime?

Let's say the FBI started today on a fast dual core computer, the files, assuming there aren't too many (and there probably isn't) and the key isn't too long and complex, could be decrypted sometime in 2018.

The FBI does combine the computing power of all of their computers when they need to, but I'm not so sure they would consider this case a top priority.

However, IF they would allow the combined computer resources of many volunteers, it could be done a lot sooner.

I have zero doubt that the 800+ miles Josh drove in the rental car has something to do with meeting up with his father.
I am 99% suspicious that all the phone calls with his father up to her disappearance were plotting her demise and discard.
I feel 100% sure Steven Powell will NEVER talk.

I think this case has reached an end unless LE can come up with any circumstantial evidence against SP to prove involvement such as ATM receipts, surveillance video along his route...and even then...they will be hard pressed to make charges stick.
The only hope for a closing end here is that some hiker or spelunker happens upon Susan's remains one day.
Unless, the charred evidence found yet unidentified, was already the end of the road.
One thing we know for 110% sure is that Josh murdered Susan that night..NO DOUBT.

BBM.

You're partially right. I agree here on Earth this case has reached an end. I don't feel they will ever find Susan. I too feel 100% confident that Steven helped his son murder and discard Susan (even if it was only giving him advice on how to do it). I think Steven was 150% complacent in her murder.

But I don't think this is the complete end of the case. It's only been partially handled. I have every confidence that Josh was handled accordingly by our Higher Power. The only remaining item to handle is Steven and perhaps Josh's siblings if they contributed.

Sometimes good things happen to very bad people. The fact that Josh and his father escaped justice for the murder of Susan is a tragedy. They might have escaped justice in this life but will certainly not in the next.

Where do you get your information?

Amateur computer geek and true crime enthusiast. I estimated the time of computing based on articles I've read the last few days. My search term was: "decrypting files." Also: "FBI computers."
