Student suspended for doing handstands and cartwheels

Looks like you're confusing pursuing a harmless activity with not following a parental directive for the good of the child.
It's not about the activity, it's about the authority and a student respecting it; hence, my analogy.

Here's the quote from the article:

"Deirdre Faegre was suspended for a week after repeatedly disobeying school officials who told her not to perform gymnastic stunts during lunchtime."

And if so, being told that you cannot do it is not a school rule, but an arbitrary one. It's like a teacher telling you you cannot wear green...
That's true, not every little rule is spelled out, however, there are general rules about student conduct and ensuring the safety of the student.

When I was at school, we weren't allowed to throw snowballs (in a game of tag, even). It was an unwritten rule and the students had to respect it.

It is usually the case that school officials are forced to make decisions and seemingly arbitrary rules to help secure that our children are safe. If the student has a problem with the issue, they should take it to their parents who in turn should bring up the issue before the principal, or further up before the board.

Can you imagine the chaos if every single student would start choosing willy-nilly which rules to follow, which officials to obey/disobey, as if they know best? The officials are there to keep order and it is difficult when you have a student that repeatedly does not listen.

I agree with Jacobi on this..............she wasnt suspended for doing gymnastics per se she was suspended for doing them after being REPEATEDLY told NOT to!!!! She was disobediant-period.
No different than if a student was told to not bring a gameboy or walkman to school but continued to do so.
If she was suspended after having NEVER been warned I can see the problem but clearly she was warned so its a discipline problem.

As for the safety issue..............if she gets hurt who gets sued? The school. If she was doing them in say gym class ,under supervision ,thats a different situation but to just gambol about during lunch(what if she slips? Another student knocks her over?) is inviting trouble.
My daughter is in gymnastics at a GYMNASTICS SCHOOL *NOT* her school!!!
AND her gymnastics teachers have made it clear that girls should NEVER perform or practice anywhere but in the studio where they are supervised to avoid serious injury. The school also does not reconmend the use of backyard trampolines and they asked a girl to leave after she injured herself on the weekend on a trampoline(she was doing flips, flipped right off the tramp. and broke her arm) as its school policy to not perform gymnastics outside of the studio-a policy I agree with.

To my surprise when we moved to Victoria this year, each child at primary school must do 20 mins of excercise every day first up in the morning in addition to normal PE. This takes the form of a run or walk around the oval with supervision by teachers - but no, it's not compulsory for the teachers to run around the oval :) As far as I know this is the only state in Oz which has this rule.
I think it's a good idea as it's making it a habit at an early age. Does the US school system have anything like this? It probably would help with the obesity epidemic the media are saying is happening all over the world.
Poor ole yodabug has to do this at school, then in the arvo I drag him & his sisters around the block for 30 mins  Anyone would think Evil witch Mum is making them walk for 30 km's in the outback with no water! :D

Hi Messiecake :) I keep missing you LOL

I saw the parents of this girl, and the principal of the school, on the Today show over the weekend, and I must say the parents seem to have a screw loose! The dad started talking about schools in some other area inspecting "thong underwear" and "vulva" (can I say that, I hope I'm not breaking rules or offending anyone!), and made absolutely no sense as to how that in any way relates to this situation. It is my understanding that she was performing the gymnastics in the hallway (not on the playground) where doors could open in front of her and other kids were passing back and forth, causing a safety hazard. It is probably more than just some kid doing cartwheels at recess, more likely a child causing a disruption... but that is just my opinion.

After reading through the many comments on this situation, I have to agree with Jacobi and take back my original comment. She/he is correct. It was not about the cartwheels per se, it was about respect and following directions. I would give an example where a child repeatedly disregarded safety rules during some activity that would not be considered harmless. For example, not following directions during a fire drill and staying in the classroom or hiding in the bathroom or something like that. We would probably all agree that this is wrong. And that after being told repeatedly not to do this, some action must be taken. While we may not agree that doing cartwheels during lunch was a dangerous activity, it was made clear to the girl that she was not to do them and she ignored this direction, not once, but many times. It was for this reason that she was suspended.

Now, I also agree that kids do need more chances for play and physical activity during lunch breaks than they often are allowed. But that is a separate issue altogether.

Re "Cartwheel compromise best,' (Your View, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Nov. 21):

The reason I refused to stop (doing cartwheels) was because I was not given a designated area even though my parents had asked for it. Also, the school never made it an issue at the beginning of the year. There are many sports out there and you can get hurt by playing all of them, but they did not allow my sport.

My dad helped me because there are many people in the past who made great changes such as Luther and Galileo and Rosa Parks that stood up to stubborn unfairness. If you do not go against something that is wrong how do you expect to fix your problems?

It is a good thing my dad will home-school me because education these days is not as good as it should be. I will not miss my friends because we have one another's phone numbers and we can see each other any time. Also my dad says that anyone not using the schools should not have to pay for them.

Deirdre Faegre

West Covina

My daughter's 'Letter to the Editor' rests on the quintessential points. Allow me to elaborate. This is about an educrat who has exhibited another disgraceful episode of abuse found in Government Schools endemically. Should the American revolutionaries have not challenged the tyranny of King George III?

Here are the facts and this is the timeline:

09/28

After picking up my daughter, she divulges that she was admonished for doing cartwheels at lunch on the playground. I considered the event anomalous and probably involving extenuating circumstances.

09/29

After picking up my daughter, she explains that she was admonished once again and without leaving the campus, investigated by finding the instructor involved. Learning that such intransigence originated from Patton and finding her gone for the day, I emailed her the following day expressing incredulity at such repressive behavior.

09/30

My wife meets with and Electronic mail correspondence sent to Patton. No compromise is offered.

10/28

Nearly a month later, she responds perfunctorily by electronic mail without offering any compromise. A phone call from Patton offers no compromise and I dutifully warn her that I have already alerted the media about this episode.

My daughter begins to receive detention time at lunch for her civil disobedience. A model student and citizen who has never questioned authority heretofore, believes she has a compelling case and dutifully and politely accepts her punishment for approximately two weeks leading up to her suspension on Wednesday, 11/10.

If Patton had sincerely concerned about Deirdre’s safety and the “safety of others," she would have found an area that accommodated her passion as any decent person would have. But safety was only a ruse--a distraction to her predilection towards pathological control of these authoritarian, psychotropic medication, indoctrination and incubation facilities that are known as public schools.

I made one stop to my local newspaper. I never chased or manipulated the development of what became, an international media frenzy. It wrote itself. This pathological priestess in the tradition of Eva Peron has now been disgraced by her arbitrary arrogance, been forced to recognize Deirdre's Cause of the Cartwheel for posterity and has, wait for it. Are you sitting down? Set aside an entire football field for her to be herself. Why could that have not been arranged at the end of September? Maybe you should reread the facts stated herein.

It would be easier to compromise philosophy and integrity and gain the notoriety that has been claimed as our purpose. It would be relatively easy to be elected as either a Democrat or Republican, receive campaign bribes from the teacher’s unions and ignore the comprehensive malfeasance found in Federal Education. Back in 1983, members of the Reagan-era National Commission on Excellence in Education wrote that, "if an unfriendly foreign power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might have viewed it as an act of war."

So if this episode was about my Libertarian activism, why has there been so little attention made about it? I have insisted to the media that my Libertarianism not be mentioned. This is about children being children and nothing more. Remember, I had alerted Patton in a phone conversation that I had discussed this with a local reporter regarding her 'mother may I' paternalism prior to her suspension. Though forwarned, she huddled with the collective ‘intellectual genius’ of Edison Schools and the West Covina Unified School District and drank the poison anyway. She thinks as any government goon; she cares only about her own. It is their school, not ours, as this nanny of nonsense protects her own rather than our own. She is counterfeit.

Free education for all children in public schools

I have never, ever concealed my contempt for the gulags of government education. The commissars of the state indoctrinate these 'Stepford Children' to insure their own control of our destiny without the slightest knowledge of the general population, which obviously includes this High Priestess of Handstands.

Originally heralded as innovative, San Jose Edison Academy assumed the mantle of the typical incubation centers that have harmed all children to some degree whether their ignorant parents know it or not; and do so with our money.

Unfortunately and lamentably, it was and remains our best option though I implore my fellow citizens of a much better way--alas one that is competitive, conducive to greatness and remains beyond the pale of the Federal Leviathan; The separation of school and state. It can be found here: http://www.honested.com

The only relevance of this episode is that my daughter was denied the right to be herself. My daughter was never told to violate this arrogant and arbitrary edict. I just never insisted that it be followed. So much for what one critic has called my evil master plan; adherence to and affection for the US Constitution—Article One, Section Eight where no mention of government schools can be found.

As one blogger put it, “Of course, we all know that cartwheels are just a gateway activity to harder actions, such as round-offs. ”And another put it so succinctly, "go revolutionary cartwheelgirl..."

"First, God created idiots. That was just for practice. Then He created school boards."

---Mark Twain

So the next time you hear about something as remotely abusive as thong underwear inspections [in San Diego] or vulva examinations [for genital warts without parental permission in Pennsylvania], I hope you think of me as something other than an irresponsible parent. And if not, please stay home on election day, and let me help you with a legal excuse from jury duty.

Im sorry but to compare your daughter disobeying school orders to NOT do cartwheels to Rosa Parks is wayyyyyyyyy off base and very ,very offensive.
If she wants to do gymnastics, take her to a gymnastics school. Why should a tax payer funded, government public school adjust their rules and regulations to accomodate one child who wants to show off as thats all this is.Shes at her school to learn not to do gymnastics.
Her "civil rights" were NOT violated in any way, shape or form. She was told not to do something and she continued to do it-thats a discipline problem, thats your parenting issue-not the schools.

AND furthermore Sir if you do not like the way the public schools are run remove your child and put her into a private school or homeschool her yourself.

I have mixed feelings about this whole thing. To begin with, I think the administrators at the school could have acted like grownups and not spoiled brats not willing to compromise even a little. For them to ruin a child's "record" by suspending her for this is complete b.s. Be that as it may, I have always told my children that during the school year, anything they're not allowed to wear/do/bring at school is the way it is. After all, they've got to learn one day that everything they're ever going to do will come with its own set of "rules" that they are going to have to learn to deal with and adjust to. I can see that schools need to minimize "distractions" so that every child can get a decent eduction. However, I also feel that they're taking away too many "freedoms" in school and its sad. They seem to want little walking, talking robots and not individuals with their own personalities. Some schools actually ask parents to put their children on medication when the kid is simply doing things that any normal kid does.

I guess the bottom line here is that the school did what it thought was best and the parents of the child will have to do what they think is best. While rippling the waters can sometimes be a good thing, taking this huge of a stand is a serious step. I hope the parents of this child teach her that she's going to have to learn how to pick her battles.

I also completely am shocked by the comparison to Rosa Parks.

 Let me get you a tissue. She does go to a gymnastics facility several days a week as she trains for her goal of making the Olympic team. If government wasn't administering education, physical education could include gymnastic disciplines. Precluding the need to pay for training, 'ala carte.'

I am a taxpayer that is part owner of that school, so I appreciate that perspective also. These genius' should have 'done cartwheels' to accomodate her talent. There is something about individual choice that bothers totalitarians.

There was no codified prosciption of cartwheels on campus. Nor should there be. They are a safe 'rite of passage' for young girls. No adjustment necessary. She is an honor student, decorated in October for scholastic achievement and 'Courage.' And as a model student, now must be recognized for her statesman-like citizenship.

She will be removed from the gulags of government indoctination on my schedule--not yours or theirs. For, as you have correctly pointed out, I pay for this school.

The collective International shame that besmirched her and her wretched education establishment resulted in a 'change of heart.' Edison, Vladlovic and Patton put their plural genius together and came to the conclusion that "It made the school look bad...." and gave her a football field. These people live in an Orwellian universe. I warned her...

Give a child credit for having a brain, and they will use it.

Repressive authority brings rebellion.

If a child was being disrespectful or unwilling to do the class work, send them to the people responsible for not steering them the right way, the parents.

My family had 3 teachers in it, but an even greater influence in my life has been exposure to what psychotherapists have to go throu with children. In every case I could say the parents and not the child needed the therapy.

And the elementary school kids here are not allowed to play Red Rover.

Red Rover is DANGEROUS!

I personally broke my collarbone playing Red Rover. I did it when I was trying to protect my broken arm (which I broke the day before when I fell out of the tree) I tripped and fell.

I might have been a wee bit accident prone. A fact that my parents did not appreciate since we all had to be interviewed for child abuse.

I lived in Alaska during my Jr. High School years. Basketball was HUGE up there. My sister and I were in the girls' locker room before a game one night and she did a cartwheel. Unfortunately, there was a girl standing behind her and the back of my sister's heel hit the girl in the mouth and drove six of her top front teeth right up into her face. She had to have about four major reconstructive surgeries. Since that was many moons ago, thankfully, my sister wasn't kicked out of school, nor were my parents sued. However, one must realize that it wasn't an isolated incident and teachers who see this sort of thing often must do what they can to prevent injuries to other students. While I do think its silly that the school couldn't have found a "safe" place for this girl to do some cartwheels, I can understand the school's need to try and make it a safe place for everyone.

Don't you think anything can be dangerous? I cant think of a single thing that can be said to be 100% without a risk. Thinking back on my childhood, I am amazed that anyone from my generation survived to adulthood. We played...and we played hard from sun up to sun down. Yes, we had our share of broken bones, stitches, concussions etc..but we survived. Now we are all wondering why our children are becoming overweight at such an early age. Could it be that we as adults are so paranoid about an injury that we are discouraging the very things that help keep them in good physical condition?

Crap, I lost a huge reply!!!!

Long story short, I think that the tight budgets, crowded classrooms, etc. make it impossible for schools and teachers to do the sort of things that they allowed when we were going to school. They want all of the kids to fit into the same sized hole and the ones that don't, whether they be "special needs" kids, talented, risk takers, rule breakers or future human rights heros, they just don't make a place for them.

This case had a happy ending ultimately because the father obviously saw that his daughter needed to learn in a different environment than she had at her school and he was able to make that place for her.

For those of us who have children whose needs are not being met in their current schools, we have to go outside to find experiences and tools that meet their needs.

This has become ridiculous on the schools part. I mean if she repeatedly disobeyed, it's because they didn't give her an area to play as she wanted. Come on folks, it's cartwheels. When I was a teenager, shorts were not allowed in school and the principal sent me home during exams. Since any type of skirts were not banned, my sweet smart thinking grandmother said "find the shortest most revealing skirt - then go to school and ask the principal if that's better". So I did.

She shouldn't have been suspended. That's my 2cents :twocents:

Last year my dd's school banned shorts above the knee but forgot about skirts. They got around to correcting their error and the first one to be sent home for breaking the rule of skirt above the knee was a TEACHER!!!! LOL
I tried very hard to get some of the boys to wear skirts above the knees to help the girls protest, but ... no dice.
