If anything, it looked like the older man (in his 60s or 70s going on 7) was trying to intimidate the student, who showed restraint and looked at him in amusement and begrudgingly held his ground. It's funny how people can draw all these conclusions from the looks on the kid's face, almost like it is mindreading.

Maybe the older man should be held to a higher sense of responsibility and act more like a mature adult, instead of beating a drum near the kid's face. I would expect someone older and so distinguished to act that role. Everyone wants to hold the 16-17 year old to all these high standards, but not the adult? It must be that red hat.

Outrage as non-Native youth wearing #MAGA hats taunt and disrespect Native elder
Nathan Phillips, Omaha, is a Vietnam-era Veteran who hosts a sacred pipe ceremony at Arlington, was taunted in D.C.

Native Twitter has gone ablaze as a Native American elder singing the AIM Song in Washington DC during the Indigenous Peoples March was ridiculed, taunted and mocked by a group of non-Native youth.

The video, which was posted by YouTube account holder KC NOLAND, was also screen captured and shared on other social media accounts with views shortly gaining tens of thousands of views.

The elder is Nathan Phillips, an Omaha elder who is also a Vietnam-era Veteran and former director of the Native Youth Alliance. He is also a keeper of a sacred pipe and holds an annual ceremony honoring Native American veterans in the Arlington National Cemetery.

I watched a few different videos and read a bunch of comments. Either person could have stepped away and made this a non issue honestly. My problem is a pack of teens, on a school trip, showing no respect to others. It can’t be a coincidence that these kids had issues with more than one group of people.
As a parent I still wouldn’t stick up for my child. If my child showed that little respect for others I would be completely pissed, and embarrassed.

I can agree with the other students in the background were disrespectful with their mocking chants, but I don't think the young man with the drums in his face did anything wrong.

From the accounts I read, it seems the older man walked up to the teens, as they waited for their bus. The teens were not blocking anyone. They were waiting for their bus, and were approached by the activist old man. So, what are you supposed to do when some old man, walks up to you while waiting for your bus, and start beating a drum in your face. This whole story seems a lot of make believe outrage over nothing.

The Covington Kentucky Mayor and the Kentucky Secretary of State also respond

In an op-ed for the Cincinnati Enquirer, Covington Mayor Joe Meyer titled “March confrontation doesn’t represent city’s values,” Meyer said, in part, “The disrespect shown to a Native American elder, who happens to be a Vietnam Veteran, was particularly offensive...let me - as Covington’s mayor - be absolutely clear: No. The videos being shared across the nation do NOT represent the core beliefs and values of this City. Covington is a diverse community, in areas of race, national origin, ethnicity, religious preference, sexual orientation, and income.”

The mayor summed up his commentary on the incident stating, “Covington is proud of being a welcoming City where bigotry, discrimination, and hatred will not be tolerated.”

Ugh, this is a longer video. So much hate, so much disrespect all around. If you go to around the 1 hour mark you can see a bit more on how it unfolded.

ETA link to video.

On the school website, it looks like one kid is showing hand signs of some kind.

Yes, that's definitely a bad hand sign. White power. Very sad these young people's minds have been poisoned so early in life. There's probably a lot of peer pressure in school to fit in with these types of kids, so I'm not ready to blame all the parents in this situation. Even if you're teaching your teen the right things at home, they may cave to those beliefs at school to be accepted in the "in crowd".

I am confused. Isn’t this a Catholic school? What are they learning there?

You took the words right outta my mouth, and my heart. I am so glad to have seen the entire video before jumping to conclusions.

That young man did nothing wrong.

I've been to DC marches before (but not this one). What you see and hear in the full video above is pretty much what these things are like. Loud, obnoxious people yelling at each other is the norm. But as "out there" as many of them are, they believe in and are passionate about their cause. That's where this incident slid off the rails.

Those kids were supposedly there to participate in the "Right to Life" march. If that's their cause, then what was their beef with both the Yahweh guys and the indigenous people? Were they opposing reservation abortion clinics? Is that even a thing? All I heard out of those kids were racial slurs and Trumpian catch phrases. Also note that the Yahweh and Indigenous groups stayed within the areas they were in to start with. The kids were the ones who encroached their way into these groups, and with no purpose other than to be aggressive and confrontational about... nothing.

As a side note, I found it interesting that there isn't a cop or security to be seen anywhere. Maybe having massive marches while the NPS police are down due to the shutdown isn't the best idea?

This isn't even political or based on a legitimate issue. It's just shameful ignorance.

Just nauseating.
EXACTLY RIGHT! Shameful ignorance!

Hey Everyone,

Unless you have hardcore evidence of what a hand signal represents let's not turn this into something it is not.

Do not speculate if you are going to turn this into a right or left argument. Show the evidence, otherwise discuss the facts.

Thank you
