Sunny the red panda missing from Virginia Zoo, Norfolk, 24 Jan 2017

Why did Ollie go? Here are some theories we've been seeing:

1. Ollie is a political protester
This is perhaps the most popular theory: that Ollie, along with escaped red panda Sunny from the Virginia Zoo, is responding to D.C.'s new political climate by either getting the hell outta dodge, voicing (more like barking) her opinion about the latest executive orders at a demonstration, or laying low to avoid the ensuing chaos.

Sounds like Ollie & Sunny skipped town together! Perhaps headed to Canada? #RebelsAgainstPOTUS #SmithsonianZoo #VirginiaZoo

I'll bet Ollie is heading to the Supreme Court to protest the travel ban. Watch our Trump. #biggame #NoBanNoWall https://t.co/S1kWmpT6Yi

In seclusion until her Supreme Court nomination is announced? https://t.co/YK2W3NCcFs

2. Ollie is sick of the way people are talking about her and females everywhere
In Monday's press conference, Saffoe referred to Ollie as "standoffish" and "not super friendly." Essentially, Ollie is a *****, despite being feline rather than canine. Human females can relate to this designation.

Ollie has been criticized as "very standoffish" and “not super friendly” because i guess there's no right way to be a female BOBCAT either

3. There's an ongoing red panda-bobcat conspiracy
Ollie may be the most recent zoo escapee, but red panda Rusty remains among the most famous fugitives. And Monday was an important day in history for those following his journey.

Guys, Rusty the red panda left the @NationalZoo 3 years ago today... https://t.co/Vq60Fio4Ot via @DCist https://t.co/vuQWpUo5LG

And the furry fan fic for Sunny and Ollie's shared adventures has begun. Somewhere in D.C., Rusty the Red Panda and Ollie the Bobcat are sipping on a $5 latte.

4. People associated with the new administration are big game hunters ... just sayin'
Eric and Donald J. Trump, the first sons of the United States, have a thing for killing large predatory cats. While the two of them are based in New York, they've traveled further in search of thrills.

just putting this out there... #OnePercent #AnimalHunters arrived in D.C. about 9 days ago... https://t.co/wsQ4nsIQOh

Interesting, JerseyGirl. Hmmm. I wonder if Sunny and Ollie were in danger of being deported. By escaping the zoo, they've gained a lot of supporters so maybe it's part of their strategy to protest deportation.

This makes me feel better! Is where are you?

“They love to people watch,” she told me.

I had to ask Mars the obvious:

“Any chance Sunny was eaten by one of the carnivores in the zoo?”

“No,” Mars replied with certainty. “Our keepers go in the exhibits every day. ... They even check fecal specimens.”

Ollie the bobcat was found in the zoo, at the bird exhibit. :)

Here's a link describing Ollie's capture with a continuing spirit of this thread. LOL

“She didn’t go too far, which is really reassuring to us,” Saffoe said. “I think she wanted to go out and have a little bit of fun. See what it was like on the outside and [then] ‘I think I’m ready to come back inside now.’ ”

I'm glad Ollie is home safe and presume all of the birds are accounted for, too. I hope Sunny takes note and returns to the Virginia Zoo. Here is the latest on Sunny, along with new theories on her escape:

Frequent visitors said large branches from a tree in the enclosure had sloped above a pedestrian walkway.

“We used to wonder what kept them from getting out,” said Karen McSpadden, 32, of Virginia Beach. “I guess nothing was.”

The branches looked freshly sawn...

Also of interest at the link:

...A 10-year-old red panda in China was found in August after 242 days, according to media reports. The animal was less than 3 miles away.

I think Sunny is going for the record!

Starting to wonder if he was taken.

If not taken, maybe found and kept? I do wonder as well. I hope they are watching the sale sites for exotic animals.

Sunny still missing, no updates since 2/16

The staff at the Virginia Zoo still encourage anyone who sees Sunny to call the hotline at 757-777-7899, and to not try to touch, feed or capture her.

Poor Sunny. I was just thinking about her the other day. I hope where ever she is she's safe and well fed. I keep wondering if someone with bad eyesight mistook her for a kitty cat like in the Sears commercial from roughly a year ago.

I'm surprised anyone would trust this zoo with another endangered animal.
