Mike Coupe, the Chief Executive of British supermarket chain Sainsburys, has been given a two-year jail term in Egypt.

Egyptian authorities accused Mike Coupe of trying to seize cheques connected with the collapse of a business the British retailer had invested in.

Coupe was sentenced in his absence and a spokesman for Sainsburys says he refutes all the allegations. He was not employed by Sainsburys at the time and news of the sentence, made last September, has only just been released.
