Or, even be able to pass the new draconian standards, that will look for anything you have done, or not done, in the last 40 years. I wouldn't be able to pass that gauntlet.

Hm. So most people have done sexual assault in your opinion? I think most women have been assaulted but I don’t think most men are assaulters, are they?

So, the US Constitution went into effect in 1789. Do you believe we should still be conforming to the norms of that time? Do you believe the founding fathers foresaw the times in which we're living now?

IMO, we're seeing some cracks in the Constitution now.

Fine, go ahead and trash the best framework of a government that has lasted, endured, and continues to be something people from every country in the world wants to be a part of...

Sure, it is not perfect. Things change. But for all of Kavanaugh's flaws, he really knows the law. I was impressed by the effortless performance he had for 32 hours, of often, bombastic, sarcastic, aggressive inquiry, on his knowledge base, writings, and rulings. He knows the law. And that is impressive.

I am pretty sure that most people have some things from their past, especially high school and early college years, that could be construed as illegal, unethical, inappropriate...or some sort of disqualifying situation, who knows...

I find it fascinating that you actually used the word "draconian," considering the US Constitution was drafted 229 years ago.

Here's a link to the amendments to the Constitution....so far:

List of amendments to the United States Constitution - Wikipedia

Including the blessed 2nd amendment. And, the first.

Why? Is there some info on that?

The protests, many incl. violence, the red hangers, the death threats...all began a week or two ago for Collins and those on her staff.

Too late. My high school grandchildren are incredidibly bright and are incredibly liberal as are my children who are even more liberal than I am. And my children’s in laws who are also liberal.

We are Minnesotans from a long line of left wing whackos. Families united! And my grandson’s gf’s family is liberal as well. Oh no!

My granddaughter dropped her bf the very night he did not give her a birthday gift. Lol. The grandparents are left wingers but am unsure what the parents are.

None of us appreciate liars and people who blame others for their problems. Own your problems. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps.

What does your family being liberal have anything to do with my post?

I don't.

This is relevant - because they are doing it right now!

And hey I just gotta say I have always found this amazing.

You gotta be fair to me tho. Via vocation I was somewhat acclimated to walking on the unit and seeing people talking to chairs or ashtrays plants or whatever.

And I had understandings of why that was occurring.

But it just tickles me silly knowing that right now and throughout the entire evening morning and afternoon our leaders are standing up in our capital and talking to empty chairs all night long. Right now. The light on capitol dome is on - they are doing it now!!

When I first discovered that they do this is quite often (it was Bernie ! who i like a lot) i just played the wide shot about 10 times.

Who on earth came up with the notion that there is some benefit to the leaders of our nation talking to chairs for hours - well...................................................

been a grueling 10 days - take a chuckle - it still so cracks me up

go to 32!

Blast from the past: Susan Collins on the allegation that Franken had sexually harassed his sleeping colleague on the plane , when he was a comedian, by pretending to grope her breasts, and the first few hands on my back allegations, which Franken denied:

Collins:. "I find the allegations credible, appalling, disgusting, and degrading. Sexual harassment and assault have no place in the workplace. (Calls on Senator Franken to resign)."

No hearings or calls for investigation by Collins, no questioning of the accusers or their credibility, no due process. That was Collins then, and then was not very long ago, though my g-d it sure feels like decades ago already.

And here's one very important distinction between Franken and Kavanaugh: Senator Franken was ELECTED. Collins saw no problem in demanding that a Senator chosen and duly elected by the majority of voters in his state be forced out of his elected office without due process.

K? K has never been elected to any office. He has made political & power connections his entire life, and has been groomed and promoted and protected from the get go on through until today.

He wasn't " entitled" to a SC seat, wasn't elected to the Court, and faced far more serious allegations than Franken ever did. Yet.... Collins believes K was treated unfairly, although he was given the opportunity not only to be heard, but to be coached, to be shielded by both the WH and Senate republicans, and without ever having to be put at risk by having the FBI interview him?

We get it.

Franken - pictures.

Very, very different set of circumstances.

Most give speeches to put their remarks into the permanent Senate or House records. Members are allowed time to do this. The Senate chambers don't usually have members present unless there's a floor vote in process or during formal debate on legislation or other senate business. During those periods, time for speeches is limited. If a Senator has something important he wants to enter into the official record, on legislation, issues or business, they give a speech when votes or debate aren't taking place.

Yes, it looks silly, but it's an official procedure.

Abiding by the Constitution has little to do with "conforming to the norms of the time".

It was written with the conscious thought that it would surpass changes in society and be applicable in fairness to all times.

These men were smart, smart enough to realize the future would bring change they couldn't conceive of, and yet they managed to cover most of the bases necessary to establish a fair document that would carry the US far.

Just so I know, are there different "believable" categories of sexual assault?

What's the criteria? Pictures = it happened, no pictures = it didn't happen?

Or is it a partisan thing?

And yet, there have been 27 amendments to the constitution, thus far. One of which some cling to tooth, nail and firearms.

"These men" could never have imagined what this world has become.

Really? Never took medication for depression? That is a serious mental illness. Never flunked an exam? That is an indicator of poor concentration, and probably unsuitable for SCOTUS.

Or, perhaps you have lived a life of perfection, and privilege. Most of the rest of the great unwashed have less than stellar histories.

Pictures that show what actually happened generally are acceptable proof in court.

The comparison made between the Franken situation and Kavanaugh's was not a valid comparison, due to photographic proof.

Lawrence did an incredible piece tonight.

Actually the founding fathers never expected anyone but white men to rule the land. Woman could not vote. AA were not able to vote. There actually was no anticipation of democracy in the context we think of it now .

The country was designed to be run by white men with means and owned land - it was fascinating!

What this world has become has nothing to do with a standards as they were chosen and written and conceived of in the Constitution.

The basic tenets of that document still hold true today regardless of what the world has become, they knew that when they wrote it.

And it's precisely the way they wrote it that allowed for those amendments to be made... they knew that might be required but only under certain circumstances which they allowed for.

The study of the Constitution is intricate and fascinating.

One gag photo

There was one gag photo in Franken's case, back from when he was a comedian. There were no other "pictures" supporting the allegations. Some photos of him posing, that don't show any actual groping. In Kavanaugh's case, if you want proof of questionable behavior, look at his yearbooks. The second woman who accused Kavanaugh of exposing himself supposedly had witnesses as it allegedly happened at a party.
Witnesses generally count as evidence, no?

Too true, and even for those who have led an exemplary life... there is always something that can be considered dirt by some.
