Susan Atkins wants out of jail to die...

This is an interesting recent article from the Press Enterprise (which covers Riverside and San Bernardino Counties) regarding the Susan Atkins compassionate release issue:

Possible release of terminally ill ex-Manson family member Susan Atkins fuels outcry

"No matter what the head of the department of corrections rules on Manson family member Susan Atkins' bid for compassionate release, the public will be able to weigh in at a hearing if she lives that long.

Prison officials at the California Institution for Women near Corona have recommended to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation that she be given compassionate release because she has less than six months to live and no longer poses a threat to society. The department of corrections is reviewing her case, but regardless of its decision, the California Board of Parole will consider the matter at a public hearing, said corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton.

Atkins, 60, may not live that long.

The board will meet July 15, but it remains unclear if it will take up her case that soon.

Atkins underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor and has been hospitalized since March. However, the growth could not be fully removed, said her attorney Eric Lampel.

"The doctors have given her two to three months to live. It's important to note that she didn't ask for compassionate release. Her doctors did, and the prison recommended it," Lampel said. "Even if her release was granted, she probably won't ever leave her hospital room."

California's longest serving female prisoner to be considered for compassionate release, Atkins' case has fueled public outcry and put the state's compassionate release law to the test.

"These murders were awful, and even though it's been about 40 years, the murders left a lasting impact," said Thornton, the corrections spokeswoman. "I know that people feel very, very strongly about this, but what they need to understand is that this is a legal issue. She meets the criteria (for compassionate release) under the law.""

I can't feel any compassion for Susan Atkins, especially after looking at photos of Sharon and finding this one of her right before the murders.

That's a great article! Thanks. It's interesting to note that this is not Susan's request, but the doctors. Honestly - with late stage brain cancer, I doubt she is aware of too much.

I live within the area of where the Press Enterprise is located, just about all my neighbors get it.......I just read it online.

Most interviewed or have written responses are NOT in favor of a compassionate release.

Based on the responses I have seen on this thread, I am NOT surprised!:)

Is her case completely cold? Do you ever hear from detectives?

I don't want to get the thread too off topic, but I really have no idea what happened to your sister but you have me deepest sympathy.

Since family members of the victims have said they are not wanting the release that settles it for me. After viewing the crime scene pictures of the butchering that was done IMO she should have been put down many years ago so it seems she has already received quite a bit of mercy.

THIS is the very essence of the meaning of the word compassion. It is not a pick and choose action. I believe that God has compassion equally for all of us. If we are to be like God, how can we practice selective compassion?
Where is mankind's humanity to man ( or woman) in this situation?

Maria

Dear SJ and SCM,

You have hearts of gold. I can certainly feel where you are coming from.

I think each case should be looked at individually. In this case, with her crimes, sorry. My compassion is gone.

She had a website once that was so weird. She kept changing her part of the murder. Making seem like she really wasn't a bad person, just someone who kinda killed a few people...Jeesh.

This is the real person with babe in her belly that was murdered along with others. Sharon was 26 years old. Awfully young with her life before her. Just think she could have been a grandma by now or she could have been stricken by cancer too. She never lived long enough to find out.

I think it's natural that we all think about Sharon when we think about the Helter Skelter murders, killing a 8 month pregnant woman is about as brutal as it gets, but there were other victims also, 1 was Steven Parent, an 18 year old boy who would have started college that fall, he had his whole life ahead of him :(

I agree. One of the things that has haunted me since I first read about this case is the fact that the Manson group used to go in people's houses as they slept. Sort of a trial run. This is another invasion of privacy and another sinister aspect to who they were. Violation of privacy and violation of life.

I looked for a pic of Steven, and if you can stand to look at the photos, go here. Warning.. they are the brutal crime scene photos. Before, and after.

These poor people were butchered. You cannot possibly look at this and think that Atkins deserves a compassionate release. The shame in the aftermath of all of this is that she is still alive.

Compassion won't ever be coming from my mouth. No compassion was shown. This is horrible.

I had forgotten how horrific it was, and this thread has me googling. It really is the most evil of all evil.. that mass murder slaughter that she was such an eager participant in. And her statements made afterwards, her memory of the incident, were not made under the influence of drugs. Her actions throughout the court proceedings showed no remorse.

I predict that there is no way that she will be released to die. She will die in prison. And rightfully so.
