Susan Powell's parents finally see their grandkids
Last Update: 10:05 am

Chuck and Judy Cox, the parents of Susan Cox Powell who disappeared from her West Valley home in early December of last year, had a wonderful visit with their grandkids on Saturday in a Puyallup park. It was the first visit they’d been able to arrange with Josh in more than 3 months.

If the pictures do show up on a certain website, that would be another kind of proof – proof of who is behind that website. (Like we don’t already know.) I hope … it wasn’t a one-time “photo op.”

We think the Powell search once again illuminated the quality of Park’s leadership. He not only helped turn a potentially difficult situation into a positive experience for all involved, but he did so with sensitivity and tact.

The remains of woman's body was found about 12 miles east of Idaho Falls in a remote area last week by a motorist. West Valley City police confirm they have been in contact with Idaho police there as part of their investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell. A local newspaper reported the body was found by a driver who pulled over and was searching for a better cell phone signal.

West Valley police said the body has not yet been identified, but say it is likely not Susan Cox Powell. "We just got a call back from them a little while ago they're pretty confident that this is a female that has been missing from their area for approximately three years," said Capt. Tom MacLachlan of the West Valley City Police Department.

Just north of Ammon, Idaho, nearly three and a half hours from West Valley City, Utah, a driver looking for better cell phone reception stumbled upon the decomposing remains of a woman.

Idaho Falls Police Sgt. Phil Grimes told NBC affiliate KPVI News, "There is certainly some suspicious circumstances at the scene and that's about as far as I want to go at this point."

Back in Utah, detectives are looking into whether the body could be that of Susan, who has been missing since early December. "We're always interested in events going on in other areas that may relate back to your case," says West Valley police Capt. Tom McLachlan.

West Valley police are keeping an eye on the discovery of a body in Idaho Falls, but detectives say it's unlikely that it's that of missing West Valley mother Susan Powell.

"(Idaho authorities) are pretty sure it's one of their missing-person cases from three years ago," West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan said. "They're pretty positive it's going in that direction."

KPVI News, the NBC affiliate in Idaho Falls, reported the badly decomposed body was found Friday off a road by a man whose truck got stuck.

As of Monday, McLachlan said his department was not going to send any officers to Idaho but rather would let detectives there handle the investigation.

The skeletal remains found three days ago in the Ammon foothills were sent to Boise for an autopsy this morning. The remains were found near the windmills, when a repairman spotted them.

Idaho Falls police and Bonneville County deputies are investigating. They say the remains look like they are female, but that hasn't been determined.

Cold case files have been opened including Amber Hoopes and Stephanie Eldrige.

Monday a Utah news station is reporting the remains could also be those of missing Utah mom, Susan Powell. IFPD have not found any evidence proving that. Police say the remains looked like they had been there more than a few months.

EXCLUSIVE: A new search is planned in the west desert for Susan Cox Powell
Last Update: 2:36 am
<snipped>
Another search for Susan Cox Powell in Utah's west desert is now being planned. The search will target two areas beyond Simpson Springs that were not covered in the first search last month.

Chris Willden of Strategic Tactical Group was among the leaders of last month's search. He said, "I'd like to see 50 volunteers come out with us as well as some of the people we had last search." The first search was closed to the general public. Only people with law enforcement, military or specific search and rescue training were allowed to participate.

The same prohibition will be in place for the next search. However, this time around Willden is offering to train anyone who wants to help. "We're going to conduct a two day basic training course: What to look for, how to handle evidence, and obviously what to bring out to the desert." The course will cost you a weekend and $10. The money will cover training materials. If there is any money left over, Willden said, "That's going to help with extra supplies, especially water ... and fuel for vehicles. We want to put as much fuel in as many of the vehicles as we can just so it helps cover their costs."

The idea for another search beyond Simpson Springs is so new that no firm date has been set yet. Willden is aiming for the middle of June. That should give him enough time to gather volunteers and organize the training.
