Josh Powell speaks: My wife, Susan, left us behind

Puyallup, Wash. • Despite pressure from police and the public, Josh Powell has remained tight-lipped about why he thinks his wife disappeared or how she might be found.

But this week the husband of Susan Cox Powell broke his silence to say his wife is “extremely unstable,” and that he believes mental illness drove her to leave her family behind.

Only reduced scrutiny from her family and the public, he said, will speed her return.

“She knows she will be chewed up like hamburger when she comes back,” Josh Powell said in a Wednesday interview with The Salt Lake Tribune.

He complained his wife’s family has created an image of her that puts her under too much pressure.

SALT LAKE CITY -- The Salt Lake Tribune reported Friday that Josh Powell has finally spoken out about the disappearance of his wife, Susan Cox Powell. But a family spokeswoman says Josh's new claims are baseless.

Feds want Susan Powell’s childhood journals, father-in-law says

" The father-in-law of Susan Powell says federal agents came to his home wanting the childhood journals she kept.

Meanwhile, with the anniversary of her disappearance next week, police have issued a new flier asking for the public’s help in finding the missing wife and mother. Events commemorating or reminding people of the disappearance also are planned.

In e-mails to The Tribune, Powell’s father-in-law, Steve Powell, said agents from the U.S. Marshals Service arrived Nov. 16 at his Puyallup, Wash., home.

"The U.S. Marshals asked about Susan’s childhood journals," Steve Powell wrote. "Of course, we are happy to cooperate with law enforcement in any way we can."

WEST VALLEY CITY -- Just in time for the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of Susan Cox Powell, her husband is apparently floating a theory that she ran off with a St. George man who went missing around the same time.

A website maintained by Josh Powell was updated Saturday with several supposed "parallels" between his wife and Steven Koecher, who was last seen Dec. 13, 2009, in Henderson, Nev. The posts strongly imply that Josh Powell and his father believe they went to Brazil, where Koecher served an LDS mission.

Puyallup, Wash. - The home didn’t use to have a fence.
A year ago, Steve Powell’s home had an open backyard, like most in this community in suburban Seattle.


Then his daughter-in-law, Susan, disappeared from the West Valley City home she shared with Josh Powell and their two young sons. Josh Powell moved in with his father after being named by police as the only person of interest in his wife’s disappearance.


The brown, wooden privacy fence went up not long afterward, said Brooke Thomas, a neighbor in the Silver Creek subdivision.
“When he’s out,” Thomas said of Josh Powell, “I watch to see what he’s doing.”

It’s not documented, as far as I know, in the Cox family.”

Strained relationships » On the anniversary of Susan Powell’s disappearance, one thing about her unsolved case is clear: Family relationships already strained by divorce and her case have fallen apart.

Washington court documents from the 1992 divorce show a divided household with the Powells’ five children —Jennifer, now 36; Josh, now 34; John, now 33; Michael, now 28; and Alina, now 25 — siding with different parents.

Jennifer Graves, 18 when her parents divorced, wrote in court documents she feared her father would hurt her mother. She described calling police once after a family argument in which her brothers and father tried to grab court affidavits away from her mom, pushing her in the process. She wrote Steve Powell later tried to talk to her and her sister, Alina.

“Dad came in and started talking to Alina. He said, ‘You didn’t really think I was going to hurt mom, did you?’ She said, ‘Well, yes. I was scared,’&#8201;” Graves wrote. “And she really was scared. She was screaming and crying hysterically when Dad and the boys were grabbing mom and trying to get the envelopes ... she was terrified, and my dad was trying to convince her that nothing had really happened.”

Conjecture on Powell pours salt on wounds

Nothing like a punch to the gut on an anniversary you never wanted to observe.

It was a year ago yesterday that 28-year-old mom and housewife Susan Powell disappeared from her home in West Valley City and a year ago this coming Monday that 30-year-old Steven Koecher, a resident of St. George at the time, was last seen walking away from his car in Henderson, Nev.

For the 12 longest months of their lives, the families of these two Utahns, gone without a trace in the prime of life, have had to endure despair followed by repeated disappointment as exhaustive law enforcement investigations and massive volunteer searches have yielded no credible leads in either case.

Now, as the cold of December returns, a new twist has emerged about what happened to them.

Susan Powell and Steven Koecher ran off together, it is being speculated. They're alive and well and living most likely in Brazil, where Koecher was once a missionary.

It's a scenario that transforms Susan and Steven from victims into cheats and crooks.

The sole source for this conjecture comes from a website, SusanPowell.org, maintained by Susan's husband, Josh, and Josh's father, Steve Powell.

Small, dedicated groups hand out fliers on anniversary of Susan Cox Powell's disappearance

WEST VALLEY CITY — "Hi, my friend Susan has been missing for one year today. Do you think we could hang a flier in your window?"

For four hours, Kiirsi Hellewell goes from business to business in West Valley City, trailed by three of her children, armed with tape and fliers and the sheer determination of someone who has been searching for a full year since Susan Cox Powell went missing from her West Valley home.

All but once, the response was something along the lines of:

"Give us four."

"We've seen you on TV."

"We hope you find her."

"We're sorry she's still missing."

So is Hellewell. Since the day last December when Powell was reported missing, Hellewell has carried the torch, organizing search efforts, ribbon-tying events and flier campaigns. When asked if Powell's disappearance is always at the back of her mind, the response is immediate.

"More like the front of my mind," she said. "It is always, always there."

A new search was conducted in Utah's West Desert for any sign of missing West Valley City mom Susan Cox Powell. An all-volunteer group fanned out along the northern shores of the Great Salt Lake in the first search this year of the missing woman.

Police search Powell home in Washington

About 20 investigators from West Valley City and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department served a search warrant on the home of Joshua Powell and his father in Puyallup, Wash. on Thursday afternoon.

Steve Powell said he was at work on the phone with his family when the search of his home in the small subdivision of South Hill began. As of 4 p.m. Mountain Standard time, Steve Powell was on his way home to see what was occurring.
