A 36-year-old Swedish woman has given birth after a womb transplant donated by her 60 year-old friend.

The baby was born prematurely weighing 3.9lbs (1.8kg) and mother and baby are now doing fine. This is the first birth from a transplanted womb, and the mother had to take immuno-suppressant drugs for a year to stop the womb rejecting, before conceiving via IVF.

There have been 11 previous womb transplants in medical history but none have resulted in a live birth. The medical team are located in Gothenburg. Infertility experts are thrilled by this news because there's been a lot of controversy over whether a transplanted womb would ever be capable of carrying a baby full term.

The Swedish lady in this case was born without a uterus.
