Sydney’s ‘miracle’ conjoined twins Faith and Hope

One week survived. Miracle.

Includes video with Tracy Grimshaw.

Till date, in the entire world, only 40 cases have been registered of people being born with two faces, a disorder known as Diprosopus or Diprosopia, but very few have survived after their birth, according to the Australian newspaper.

Michael Permezel, president of the Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, said the birth of the conjoined twins is very rare. About one in 30,000 to 50,000 pregnancies produce a conjoined twin, which is the result of an incomplete embryo, but only one in 200,000 makes it to birth.

Conjoined twins Hope and Faith have distinct personalities, say parents
"Faith tends to cry a little more, while Hope takes after her mum and likes to sleep a lot," Mr Howie told Woman's Day magazine.
"Faith blows little bubbles and loves sucking her thumb but Hope prefers the dummy."
"You have to see it to believe it. Sometimes Faith will cry and wake Hope up, who then looks sideways as if to say 'Thanks for that'," she said.

A 10 year old boy from who suffers Diprosopus
Despite countless surgeries, he suffers from severe epilepsy which first appeared when he was four months old. Over the years, seizures have become numerous, in the range of 120 seizures per day.

I consider them or her to be an accident of nature. I don't see them or her as a " miracle" in any way.

At some point, if they have more than just brain stem contents in the brain, the head will become too heavy for the neck to support.

This child or these children, whichever, have ZERO chances of a life with quality and the opportunity to experience the world around them, to learn and to grow,IMO.

Also, many of us commented on how insensitive it was for the conjoined twins in India to be paraded around in the media.
India was more or less excused for doing so, as they have a penchant for showing the seamier side of life.
However, if the parents of the Australian baby or babies truly loves their child or children so much, they would have kept this out of the news and loved them in private and lived with her for the sad infant's lifespan without making the situation a sensationalized international tabloid event.
THEY knew better, and did it anyway. How is that loving? It's not, IMO.

I can't even imagine the pain that these parents are suffering; however, rationally speaking I do not think that there should be any medical intervention except pain management. These babies were meant to be angels.

Wow, there is a 10 year in Missouri with the same condition, but the Mom refers to him as one baby. The baby girls are already showing two distinct personalities. The parents are very special people, IMO.

I think he has one brain. Which is what diprosopus usually is. It's usually is not due to conjoined twins but to abnormal facial development.

"Diprosopus is a congenital defect also known as craniofacial duplication. The exact description of diprosopus refers to a fetus with a single trunk, normal limbs, and facial features that are duplicated to a certain degree. A less severe instance is when the fetus has a duplicated nose and the eyes are spaced far apart. In the most extreme instances, the entire face is duplicated, hence the name diprosopus, which is Greek for two-faced. Fetuses with diprosopus often also lack brains (anencephaly), have neural tube defects, or heart malformations. In some cases, if the brain is formed, it may have duplicated structures. Most infants with diprosopus are stillborn and there are fewer than fifty cases documented since 1864."

I am so glad that these babies were born into a household that is willing to accept them, love them and care for them for as long as they are here on this earth.

Those babies already have what so many tens of thousands of children never have have - Loving, nurturing and supportive parents.

IMO, JMO, MOO
