Muskegon crime mysteries: Talfrieda Covington, a pregnant mom, found stabbed many times outside home

Talfrieda Covington was a nice young lady. There’s no other way to say it. The friendly, loving single mother had none of the lifestyle habits associated with violence.

In the early summer of 1991, the 28-year-old Muskegon Heights High School graduate was taking adult education classes and wanted to attend Muskegon Community College in the fall, hoping to get secretarial or medical work.

“Frieda” didn’t drink, do drugs or go to clubs. She had no criminal involvement. No gang affiliations. No street life.

None of that insulated her from a cruel, early death that remains unsolved after 21 years.

Covington was found around 6:45 a.m. June 30, 1991, on the sidewalk in front of her home.

A grisly Muskegon police photograph of the crime scene, not shared with the public, tells the tale. Six weeks pregnant, Covington had been stabbed more than 20 times in the abdomen, chest and back.

“It was brutal, heinous,” said Muskegon Police Det. Matt Kolkema, currently assigned to the long-cold case. “It was a crime of passion.”

Cockett said she and her family have no idea why someone would do this, or even who did it.

“As far as why, we don't know. Who, we don't know and we haven't given up. We know there's someone out there that does know and they're walking free,” said Crockett.

Cold case: Convicted killer charged in pregnant mother’s 1991 slaying

The man accused of killing the Muskegon woman is in prison in a robbery and double homicide at a Grand Haven jewelry store.

'MUSKEGON, MI – A man in prison for a double homicide is suspected in the 1991 killing of Talfrieda “Frieda” Covington, a young mother pregnant with her third child.''

Anderson is serving two life sentences in the 2008 robbery and killings of Robert Karell, 61, owner of R.K. Jewelers in Grand Haven, and customer Louis Paparella, 77, of Roosevelt Park.

Anderson’s brother, Dmitri Anderson, 56, was also convicted of two counts of first-degree murder and sentenced to a mandatory life sentence without parole.''
