The victim told law enforcement that she had been abused by Brenda Spencer, 38, and Branndon Mosley, 41, since 2018, when she was removed from school and held captive in the couple's home.

Over the years, officials say the victim was forced to live in a dog crate, before being chained up in a padlocked bathroom, then put in a bare room with just a bucket as a toilet.

She was also reported being beaten with a belt and sexually abused by Mosley.
Teen escapes after being held captive, abused by South Jersey couple for years: officials

A couple allegedly pulled a girl out of school in sixth grade and held her captive in their home for years, housing her in a dog crate and later, a padlocked bathroom, as they abused her, prosecutors say

Detectives searched the home and found the girl allegedly had been subject to squalid conditions, alongside dogs, chinchillas and other animals. They also learned a 13-year-old girl who also lived in the home had been removed from school years earlier, also allegedly at Spencer's discretion.
Couple arrested after girl escapes NJ home, alleges years of captivity and abuse

An 18-year-old woman told police she escaped from the couple's home in Gloucester Township with help from a neighbor on May 8, 2025, after being held captive at the residence since 2018.

NEW JERSEY - Horrific is how a next-door neighbor described what a girl told her after escaping a NJ home where officials say she was confined and abused by a couple in Gloucester Township for seven years.

Susan says she and her son frantically scrambled to help the girl, eventually taking her to a hospital, where she was treated for two days.

"She said they kept her in the dog crate. It was horrific, it was disgraceful. We were both in tears, me and my son. We couldn't believe it," she said. "She told me they cut her hair and shaved her head as punishment."

I can see this house from my own. It’s CLOSE. No one even knew they had children living in that house.
I spoke to the mother, she walked her Great Dane past my house. Seemed nice & normal 😱

This has rocked our little, boring, quiet neighborhood and sickened us all.

Oh my gosh, I can imagine the neighborhood is aghast. To know such things were happening right there beneath everyone's noses. You just never know what is happening on the inside behind closed doors.

Interestingly, the victims‘ relationship to those accused is never defined. I ASSUME Spencer is the victims’ mom since articles say the children were pulled out of school at her discretion. I guess it’s better to be vague than incorrect.
Yes, Spencer is their mother and he is the “step father”
I am not certain they are legally married

She was let out when family visited? What in the actual were the family doing?!

I mean the shaved head wouldn't necessarily have been a big red flag to me. My teen daughter purposefully shaved her head as part of a trend a few years back. But I always gave her license to do whatever she wanted to her hair, wild colors, shaving it, whatever. Because it is hair, it grows back.

I do suspect family and other visitors should have picked up on non verbal cues and victim's demeanor and that of those others in the household tho.

I agree about the shaved head but with this as bad as it is, there’s no way no one just didn’t notice

I know for a fact no one in the neighborhood knew or suspected they even had children.

I did notice the other day that every window was covered with that film that looks like a plant design. Bars are on the basement windows, that’s weird for this neighborhood.
They have these LED lights outlining their house, looks like Christmas decorations. They must be on a timer they come on every single night.

Christmas time they had these fantastic huge deer on their lawn - I loved those. I remember stopping with my husband and telling them so.
Seemed so friendly and normal.

I’m talking about the family that came into the home and visited them and that was the only time she was let out

I’ve never noticed vehicles visiting that house. I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but I highly doubt it was often.
I’m going off of what the articles said.

An alarm system would alert the couple if she tried to leave, and she was only let out periodically, including when family would visit.

She stated that she would be let out of the bathroom when family visited the residence.
