Tejano Singer, Emilio, Injured in Weekend Crash

Thanks for clearing that up. Being Mexican, we are really feeling the heat of the whole immigration thing. I have never felt prejudice in my whole 27 years until now. My father was evening saying yesterday you can see in the way people look at you when you walk into a place. I just wish the hate and lies about illegal immigrants would stop spreading so my children don't ever have to feel prejudice in the United States. Also I guess I am what you call an anchor baby as my father came here illegally, my mother US citizen. Also my children would be consider anchor babies as my DH came here illegaly and I am US citizen. I am not saying coming to this country illegally is right but I can undstand why it is done. I think most people would do the same thing for a chance at a better life and to send some money home to their parents. I will be praying for him that he recovers fully and his family. Selena was a great loss to all Mexican Americans and I hope another greater singer is not lost.

I don't understand people coming down on immigrants. Unless someone here is 100% American Indian, all of us are in the US thanks to ancestors who immigrated.

Selena was one of our favorites. When the movie came out my daughter was quite young, but she watched it over and over. At the age of seven or so, she could belt out every song Selena did in the movie (I thank Selena/JLo for teaching my daughter to sing! She matched her note for note!) I cried each and every time I watched that movie...because I knew the world had truly lost a great artist. She was such a rare gem.

I am not as familiar with Emilio, but as with anyone in his situation right now and his family's...my heart goes out to them. When you have such talent to share with the world and it is silenced in such a tragic way...everyone loses the magic in his music to help bridge the gaps. :( I pray he will be able to survive and against the odds come back to carry on his work. Right now tho, I guess just being able to survive would be quite enough.

I've been trying to find video of Gloria Estefan's comeback performance at the American Music Awards in 1991, it was so powerful. I can find gospel performaces from the 80's by little known artists, but can't find that! If anyone comes across it please post FOR Emilio. Sending strength and comfort to him and his family.

I drive by that exchange twice a day going to and from work. It's baaaaaaad even when you are sober and in a small car much less MAYBE drunk and in a a big bus. Prayers for him family, friends and fans.

What is this exchange like? I saw a picture from the link and it looked like there were lots of lanes.....are there several roads merging there or is it an intersection?

!st it starts on the loop with like 5 lanes then it branches into 3 different freeways and all these cars are trying to get in the lanes they need to be in in a very little amount of space. And this is taking place on overpasses not on flat road. Concrete barriers everywhere. They just redid it and it actually, at least IMO more dangerous. I heard on the radio this a.m. something like 300 accidents there per year.

HOUSTON — Even if he survives a horrific head injury suffered in a bus crash, Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira faces a long recovery and an uncertain future, his doctors say.

..............snip............

Dr. Alex Valadka, director of neurotrauma services at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and vice chair of neurosciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, described Navaira as stable.

"In his case, that's good," Valadka said. "We're still afraid something adverse could happen. The main thing we're watching continues to be the pressure in his brain."

Valdka said if the pressure increases, doctors would try medication to control it.

They have/need to know there is great hope! I found this link from the news the day after Kevin Everett's terrible injury, before they knew what the results of the cooling they did on him would be (a version of which Emilio has undergone). Kevin not only survived, he was walking in weeks. He walked out on the field for the Superbowl! By now I'm sure he's running. Again, there is HOPE despite how it seems right now:

Thanks, kato. 300 accidents a year! Sounds poorly designed.

I am glad to hear the update on his condition. I pray he continues to improve.

Wasn't there another similiar accident with a ballteam? Was it anywhere near this area?

Just reading an article in our paper, The Houston Chronicle, that Emilio was not licensed to drive the 26,000 pound tour bus. Even though he wasn't licensed to drive it he routinely drove the bus to their San Antonio home base. They are waiting for blood-alcohol test results and claim he might have fallen asleep at the wheel.

I'm guessing he fell asleep at the wheel. They had played all night at a nightclub and were headed back to SA to spend a few days before heading off to California. I suppose he could have drank while performing, I've seen others do this, but I don't believe he'd be that irresponsible to put his or the bands' lives in danger.

Oh, My! With no license, he is liable personally. Guess that is the least of his worries now tho.

It's been so long since I've posted a link. Years. I have an article about the accident and how dangerous that part of exchange is. I go that way to and from work. That's why I take a Xanax before I leave work. LOL

A report released by the Bellaire PD says Emilio was 2 times the limit drunk.
