Families and detectives closer to answers in 40-year-old Mezo/Flores cold case out of San Miguel
May 19, 2020
''Five-year-old Teresa Flores and four-year-old Martha Mezo were kidnapped May 17, 1980, as they were walking to Martha’s house on Mission St. from the Witcosky’s Market.

The girls were missing for nearly two weeks before private contractors at Camp Roberts spotted their bodies in the Salinas Riverbed just north of San Miguel.
Detectives are not releasing how the girls were killed but did say Teresa was raped''.

''DNA evidence may hold the key to the truth.
“In 1980, [detectives] were able to locate some valuable evidence. It was worked on in 2005, but they weren’t able to make progress,” Det. Cole said. “Recently, I sent that evidence to a private lab and they have been working on it and made some progress, but unfortunately, the lab got shut down, because of COVID-19."

Teresa and Martha were last seen by family members leaving the Witcosky's Market around 11:30 a.m. after buying snacks.''

''Detectives said once the forensic labs open back up, it could be just a matter of weeks for the results from DNA testing to come back.

Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office at (805) 788-2157.''

A bit confused, did it turn out that Lucas and Toole did not commit this crime after all? speculation.

''Teresa L. Flores, 5, and Martha J. Mezo, 4, disappeared from downtown San Miguel, where they had gone to buy icecream cones on May 17,1980. Their strangled bodies were found two weeks later buried in sand under a bridge in the dry Salina River bed near Highway 101 and Camp Roberts. Martha Mezo had been beaten about the face and body and Teresa Flores had been raped. Lucas said he and Toole forced them into a car, drove seven miles to the murder site where Lucas raped Teresa Flores and Toole beat the younger girl. Lucas led officers to the site and drew a picture that accurately depicted the location of marks left on one of the bodies''

Perhaps they want the DNA results to put paid to it. Lucas was a liar and bragged about confessing to everything brought before him just to mess with LE.

Christina Flores and her sister, stand in front of the new billboard in San Miguel asking community members for information regarding their sister's, Teresa Flores, 1980 murder.
''Detective Cole believes there are still people in the community with vital information.

“[Tips] can confirm what we know and in some instances, it can actually point us in a direction that we need to go so it's extremely critical,” Detective Cole said. “I know there are people, I have spoken to people who still live in this town who were here when this incident happened.”

Yes we heard that too years ago but it wasn't true from what they heard. I don't know If those details are accurate but will say it was horrific.

Very scarce information on the case, but they have most likely interviewed the person responsible, more information would be needed however to render an analysis on this case.

I will say however that theres a very high likelihood this individual has re-offended after these 2 murders.

Also in reference to anything pertaining to Henry Lee Lucas or Otis Toole take literally everything they said with a grain of salt, they were extremely unreliable as far as confessions go, and were known to admit to almost anything.

Now there are several stories on why they did, but the prevailing theory had to do with a book deal one detective was attempting to cut with Lucas and Toole, sadly this was mostly substantiated through various sources.

Remember that at one point the police, feeling Lucas, was lying about the majority of his crimes, fabricated a fake murder and back story and like clockwork, by excluding the one detective n question, Lucas admitted to it.

Lucas and Toole both had said many times they loved to toy with Law Enforcement, and basically ran with a narrative based, of what info they were given .
