Terror attack thwarted

I have pale skin and Scottish ancestors, but I sure hope my horror and condemnation of Tim McVeigh's act of terror wasn't perceived as my obligation to protest what someone of my ethnic or religious origin did.

(and back in the day the Scots were as barbaric as they come) :o

Sorry, I'm with Karole on this. I think people of faith do have a special obligation to speak out when their extremist brethren are so out of line.

And I said as much about Christians immediately after 9/11 when Falwell and Robertson took to the airwaves to blame the attack on gays and feminists. (The response from Christians here and elsewhere was excellent, BTW.)

I understand what DK is saying about not wanting to give Phelps any more publicity, but in general I have no doubt DK will speak up against evil when it comes from Christians.

I'm flabbergasted!

==========

A spiritual leader of Rockford-area Muslims commended authorities for intercepting the alleged plot and reiterated "the Muslim community's condemnation of terrorism in the name of Islam," said Shpendim Nadzaku, imam of the Muslim Association of Greater Rockford.

Asked if he had ever met Shareef, Nadzaku said: "No one in the community has any clue as to who this person is — he's completely anonymous."

I hope this Imam is leading the way down a new path for all Muslims to feel free to condemn this kind of thing.

Well, news today says this kid is a convert to the Nation of Islam (see: Louis Farrakhan). I guess the NOI is too busy today with their support rallies for Mumia Abu-Jamal (killed officer Faulkner, see other thread) to release a statement about this young man.

I wonder if Keith Ellison is attending any of the Jamal rallies?

Gidget### lives just down the road in Belvidere.

My sister-in-law and her family live within walking distance of that mall.

YES I certainly do live just down the street! I saw this on line this morning and was very f@!&ing freaked out! We were just at that mall Thurday evening getting Tyler's pictures done at sears! and to see santa. (see pic in my siggy line)

I am just glad they caught the stupid S.O.B before he did anything!

Over the summer some wack job went into that same mall with a machete (SP)and was screaming he was going to kill people, he was right by the play area and mothers and were running and grabbing thier kids and screaming (as I would be too in that situation)

I would say they need to step up security there, but what would it really matter? They would just bring in more Rent-A-cops. which IMHO means nothing!

Evidently he is a Muslim convert. Since he's only 22, I doubt he converted more than 2 or 3 years ago.

Maybe a John Walker Lihnd situation - rebellion against family, against our govt.; troubled teens can often join up with sects or groups with dangerous ideologies; in this case radical Muslim.

So, you figure blowing up a mall for allah has probably been a lifelong dream and his conversion to islam is just a coincidence?
