Oh wow! Interesting new developments! I'm not surprised though.

Wasn't it DT who told LE that they had dumped the laptop?

IMO it is not feasible that these two walked so confidently thru the crowds with bombs in their backpacks without absolute knowledge that they were safe! They were not out to kill themselves. So, to have confidence that they were in control of detonating the bombs, there had to be prior practice. And lots of it!!

Also, remember they were driving around with another pressure cooker bomb in their car the night of the shootout, so they were really at ease with being around what they built. All of this points to prior knowledge and use in my mind.

bbm - acc to this article there had been text messages from TT to mom saying 'I'm willing to die for Islam'.

4) I've been looking at pressure cookers currently available from Macy's just to remind myself of their relative size and bulk (I used to own one many moons ago but we didn't get along very well). I think they would fill out an average backpack pretty well and produce a noticeable bulge, not to mention the likely weight if they were filled with various metal objects. Looking again at the CCTV of TT and DT walking by on the street, TT's packpack doesn't look very filled out to me, certainly not as much as I would expect it to be with a bulky pressure cooker inside. A couple of the models available from Macy's are described as being around 8" x 11" so they're quite big. DT's bag does look fuller, but he has it slung by one strap so that may make the contents bunch to one side or to the front, plus it looks as though it's double-pouched to me. Just my observations.

respectfully snipped for space

Interesting observations, devon. Food for thought!

Re the backpack - could it be that they had a backpack within another backpack? That would explain why the one left at the scene looks different from the one they were seen carrying.

CNN reporting one of the arrested males returned to his homeland for a visit in Dec. 2012, was no longer enrolled in school as of early January 2013, but was admitted back into the U.S. on Jan 20, 2013. Legally he should not have been readmitted to our country.

Another unemployed person who can afford international travel? (Yeah, right, maybe his parents were paying for his travels.) Why come back to the U.S. if you are no longer attending school?

ETA: I am really quite upset to learn how poorly our "agencies" seem to be doing in tracking these things.
If anything at all good comes out of this, perhaps there will be changes/upgrades to the system of tracking people who are on a "watch list", who are here on student visas and are no longer a student, etc.

I am so tired of hearing that "this agency did not communicate with that agency".

-- A source briefed on the investigation says that one of the Kazakh students facing charges, Dias Kadyrbayev, was first handcuffed and taken in for questioning by FBI agents April 19, hours before police captured Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Kadyrbayev was released and then taken in for questioning again on the morning of April 21, according to the source.

-- One of the reasons Kadyrbayev was of immediate interest involved activity on his Facebook page. The source says that while Dzhokhar was on the run -- at 3 a.m. on April 19, Kadyrbayev deleted a photo showing him and the suspect having dinner together, according to the source briefed on the investigation.

-- The source said that Kadyrbayev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev both changed their Facebook photos early Friday morning within 15 minutes of each other.

Yeah, that's the same feature I'm looking at, but it's hard to work out what part of the bag it's on. I don't really know how to do arrows etc on pics but the 'strap' part I'm looking at is directly below the 'L' in ATLANTA in your image. I'm not sure whether the long strip lying out to the left of the bag is a strap or a shred! :detective:

Yeah, that's the 'stripe' part I was looking at, too.

The thing is such a mess, it would seem to be a significant part of the bomb attack (and was initially looked at in that regard). Hopefully better pics will come out during the trial--if there is one.

OMG! I go outside to spread the mulch...and all h@ll breaks loose!

I remember hearing that the two men were here on expired visas also. I think that came out around the same time we were all glued to this website trying to find DT in Watertown.

I do think one gigantic change that will come from all of this is that someone is going to have to address that "agency did not communicate with another agency" issue. Sadly, it has taken this tragedy to alert our government to this huge whole in our security.

Apparently the boys are saying they didn't know anything about DT's involvement in the bombing, but there is speculation that the boys threw away DT's laptop after his picture was released by the FBI.

Do any of you think that the FBI found the laptop in the landfill, and they found evidence on it that incriminates these guys? The timing sure fits.

Yes, that's possible, but it would add to the overall bulk. TT's backpack just doesn't look bulked out enough to me.

And then there's still this object, sitting by the bin in front of the Forum, right at the spot where the Richards family later stood. About the size of a pressure cooker. Might just be rubbish..................................

Image at link, It is my opinion that they found it or what ever they were looking for, They left after 2 days. I don't think they would have left after just 2 days empty handed. jmo

Wonder if the female was arrested today because she is a match to the female DNA found on the bomb? They had taken DNA from more persons than just KR IIRC.

That's a good point. Did I read that the female is DT's girlfriend?

One official said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev contacted the three after FBI agents released photographs of Tsarnaev and his older brother Tamerlan and asked them to dispose of the items.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/01/us/boston-attack/index.html?hpt=hp_t1

The bombers either didn't care, or thought there was no threat of them being seen at the marathon, because they walked about in plain sight. They also seemed confident that they wouldn't be caught, but alas, their pictures showed up on TV, and now they panic.

Don't believe there has been any indication a female has been arrested.

-- The three men arrested in connection with the investigation will appear in federal court at 3:30 p.m., the U.S. attorney's office tweeted Wednesday.

-- Murat Kadyrbayev, father of a student in the United States who was arrested Wednesday in connection with the Boston bombing investigation, said last week that his son Dias and fellow arrested student Azamat Tazhayako own a BMW that garnered attention in the investigation. The car had a decorative license plate reading "Terrorista #1." The plate was a joke from friends in Spain, Murat Kadyrbayev told the Kazakh news website Tengri News and STV channel in an interview, Tengrinews.kz reported.

Wasn't these student's apt. the one where they found bullets all over the floor? Upon LE's return visit a U-Haul truck was brought, however, nothing was taken. I thought these were two important statements, however, odd that a truck was brought yet nothing was taken from the apt.
The question still remains, where were the bombs built? Any reports of TT seen around this particular apt. before the bombings? How far is it from TT's apt in Cambridge?
<bbm>

Methinks those are special u-hauls ... with very big ears ;)

Well that explains why we've had news vans outside UmassD since 11am or so! They must have gotten tipped off early? Because I drove in behind 2 news vans, and a third was already here. I checked the news but saw nothing - so they must have heard early.

This continues to bother me. The shredded backpack clearly has two things that TT's backpack did not. The first is a white rectangular tab similar to the one the Craft security people standing nearby had on their backpacks. Second, the straps also appear to have a stripe, possibly beige, running down them. TT's backpack did not have that stripe. Now, it could be that what appears to be a stripe is actually strap lining exposed...but that bold white rectangular tab cannot be explained away. It's simply not there on TT's backpack--that I can see, anyway.

Some of the clearest backpack photos I've seen, incidentally, are here:

http://cinemaelectronica.wordpress.com/

*Warning: do not scroll all the way down if you are adverse to gruesome death photo of TT.

So to me the exploded backpack looks like we're seeing a lot of inside material (makes sense as it exploded) -you can see on the strap sticking off to the left that the "stripe" is lining - the black material on either side of it is rough-edged, like the part that's glued around the outside when the strap is put together.

If you look at the original security video: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-201_162-57580325/fbi-releases-video-of-2-boston-bombing-suspects/
I'm looking around 0:39 where you get a clear shot of TT's backpack, and you can see a perpendicular stripe on the shoulder strap, near where it connects to the backpack part. I think that's the stripe you can see under the L in atlanta in that one image.

Hmm I don't know anyone that would joke about their friends being terrorists, especially go as far as buying a license plate that says that.
