Texas School District Will Let Teachers Carry Guns

Around my town recently one teacher/coach has lots of drug charges and another was recently arrested for sexually assaulting a girl a few years ago. My own high school daughter had red marks on her neck and arm from a flirty lunatic substitute teacher who tried to physically "keep her after class". She punched him in the nose, kicked his groin, and slammed his head into the wall before getting away. If he'd had a gun she'd probably be dead now. They don't even require teachers to get a drug test. Some of the female teachers act like nervous wrecks, too. If they start toting guns, then the kids and I will consider education elsewhere or be elementary school dropouts.

Drug tests for teachers are required in PA. (Along w/ a complete physical)

I think offering teachers classes in hostage negotiation, self-defense, and restraint holds are the next step--NOT guns.

I've been attacked in school before. At that time the school policy was to "take" it. No self-defense or restraint holds were allowed. The last time it happened I was protecting a student from a "parent" (not hers) who was on campus illegally to beat the ever-lovin' crap out of the student. The student suffered only a scratched arm while I was slammed repeatedly against a metal door frame. Afterward, I spoke w/ the board explaining that I was trained years ago in restraint holds for another job, and I could have prevented my injuries and the whackos escape if the policy were different. They changed it.
The district I'm in now says I'm allowed to use any reasonable amount of force to protect myself and my students. I will.

Why not have a School Officer there? A cop who patrols the school only?

I would be OK with this had I not met some really dangerous teachers.

Jeez. I work in a school. The pay and stress are terrible, and now I need a bullet-proof vest and helmet to protect me from my fellow teachers. That's great for moral. =) Do vests and helmets come in different styles to match my outfit? I'll need a cowgirl style for my denim jumper.....

If the problems are so serious in that school, they need help, not guns. Holey moley, it sounds like the school board and super have given up on the kids. Just shoot 'em.

If I had a child going to that school they would immediately be removed and we would find another school...that is the stupidest craziest thing I have ever heard!!!

Many districts do have an armed liason officer, that would probably be the best scenario, however I would imagine funding for this is hard to come by in a smaller community. In the article I read on CNN, it stated the police response time wouold be in excess of 30 min. I would'nt feel safe having my children go there WITHOUT an armed teacher/officer present.

When I was in high school, I was on the rifle team. The experience taught me a great deal about respect.

Of course, this is happening in Texas

Allowing teachers to pack heat is only making things less safe for all involved.

The day they allow guns on my campus is the day that I QUIT. :nono:

What about a cop on campus? We had one that wielded a gun. Well, he did until he shot a pig on school property.

It was during a football game. Someone released a greased up pig and no one could catch it. Officer Frank took aim and put the pig down. He lost his ability to carry a gun for a year.

Just to be clear, we're talking about an isolated community with an extended police response time. And the teachers who carry will be subject to extra training and evaluation. Many larger districts across the country already have armed officers in the schools. This is'nt really that big of a deal.
