I would like to discuss the 90 minute time period Terri reported she spent driving around rural roads trying to calm the baby who was fussy.
From a local point of view, I am just not buying it. Speaking as a Portlander, I find the whole idea of driving around random roads for 90 minutes for that purpose very unlikely.
Let me give you some background. Portland is known as one of the most Green cities in the nation--maybe even "the" most green. Oregon had the first bottle bill, and we are usually at the forefront of other green ideas. Right now the legislature is working on law that would ban the use of plastic grocery bags, for one small example.
The Portland Metro area has a very strict growth boundary and zoning laws. We are big on in-filling and creating greater density within the city rather than creating suburban sprawl. We spend extra money on our electric bill to support alternative clean electricity. We recycle like nobody's business. We have many forms of public transportation. We have strict auto emissions regulations to prevent air pollution. You get the idea.
So, from this lens, it is nearly unconscionable to contemplate driving that behemoth extra long pick up truck around for an hour and a half, wasting all that $3.00 gallon gasoline, simply to calm a fussy child that could be calmed much more quickly and successfully at home in a rocking chair. It just does not fit our Portland area mindset. Not at all.
I think she was up to no good during that 90 minutes. Driving around to calm the baby is a big fat lie.

My sister and her husband are ultra-green types. She recycles, they garden, they support local campaigns for the environment, she bought a Prius as soon as they came out.
But. Their second baby was a colicky, fussy baby and sometimes the only way to get him to sleep for more than a few minutes at a time was to take him for a drive.
If anyone had suggested to my sister at that time that driving her colicky infant son around was a waste of gas or not environmentally sound, well, I'm not sure her reply would be anatomically possible or suitable for publishing!
For some reason I had the knack of putting him to sleep, so my sister hired me for three months as his on-call nanny (they already had one full time nanny), specifically to help put him to sleep. That's how desperate she was. Ninety percent of the time, I could put him to sleep (no driving needed) and successfully transfer him into his crib but there was always a small chance my special auntie mojo would fail. And that's when the big ol' fuel hog Suburban came into play.
Then when my nephew became a toddler, the poor kid became prey to ear infections. Sometimes it was difficult to tell if it was really the beginning stage of an ear infection, teething or just a cranky toddler because he got in the habit of pulling at his ears when he was upset (according to his doctor, this is normal for kids who have a lot of ear infections).
One sure way to figure it out was to put him in his car seat and drive him around for awhile. If he was teething or just overly tired, he'd go right to sleep while riding in the car. If he was beginning an ear infection, the car ride didn't put him to sleep.
So, I need more context with which to judge. Did they have a history of driving baby K around to soothe her?
If so, then I'd say that it sounds believable to me.
But if the Hormans had no previous history of driving her around to soothe her, then it's clear that the driving around was out of character, to say the least.
