The aftermath of Hurricane Katrina

Relatively minor? what a horrible thing to say and belittle the deaths of thousands.

Try saying that about September 11th and see what happens

On an individual level:
I know it can be confusing to decide who to donate to. But if you do a tiny bit of research, the big charities, United Way, Red Cross, Salvation Army, etc, tell you exaclty how they spend your donations .
You may be surprised.
For me, it made the decision easy as to what charity I would give to.
I'll look for some links

Last season during the hurricanes, the beer companies bottled water in the beer bottles for victims. I saw them. We had a nice chuckle about that.

I'm on the Womens' Leadership Counsel of the United Way. For those of you who don't know, the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross are BOTH part of the United Way. Here's an e-mail that I received yesterday:

September 8, 2005

Dear United Way Supporter:

Since our last communication to you, United Way of Metropolitan Dallas has continued to convene and collaborate with our agency partners to provide immediate relief and long-term solutions to the Katrina survivors, some of whom will be new residents in our community.

As part of our on-going efforts, we held a United Way member agency summit, Thursday, September 8 to determine how we can best serve these survivors going forward, while maintaining the commitments we have to the continuing critical needs in our communities.

You may have already seen a United Way presence in the media, and you will be seeing additional local news coverage in the coming weeks. Last Saturday, September 3, United Way of America President and CEO Brian Gallagher was interviewed during a nightly telecast on CNN regarding United Way's role during this critical time.

President George W. Bush met with Brian and other national community leaders to discuss the national strategy of Hurricane Katrina. A transcript of the President's remarks is available at www.unitedwaydallas.org/katrina.

Look for an interview with me this Friday in the Dallas Business Journal as well as further coverage this week on FOX4, and The Dallas Morning News.

Additionally, several updates have been added to our website. For example, it now contains a local area and information section with statistics on the evacuees and resource information on how to find help and volunteer information on how to help. The website content will be updated daily to make sure you are informed of how we are impacting the community during this time of greatest need.

Finally, UWMD hosted representatives Wednesday, September 7, from our Top 30 campaigns to meet with American Red Cross and The Salvation Army where Major Mockabee, Area Commander for The Salvation Army and Cheryl Sutterfield-Jones, CEO of the American Red Cross Dallas Chapter gave an update of local efforts. In addition, area corporations asked United Way to act as the conduit in mobilizing the community by determining partner agency needs and assigning projects to the business community. In the next two to three days, UWMD will add a dynamic area of the website where partner agencies can submit their needs to assist in this effort.

I hope you will join me and continue to keep United Way's efforts in the forefront. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if I can provide further information or service.

Best regards,

Gary G. Godsey

I still cannot figure out why they did not have a staging center outside the disaster zone where people were transported to when rescued. Medical tents and housing tents.
They did after the governor okayed the introduction of federal troops and the Red Cross. She seems to ahve been a major log jam in this scenario, attempting to keep control of the situation. And New Orleans does not to seem to have had cohesive civil disaster response, period, beyond getting people into the Superdome with supplies for two, three days, tops.

Its a lot more JBean~!!!! There are 71 agencies in the Metropolitan Dallas area alone. Each city has its own specific agencies, but the United Way is so varied that its hard to imagine how many people they help. The Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls are even agencies. Here's a link for my area:

Some of us had questions about how this task would handled. Dr. Louis Cataldie is in charge of the morgue at St. Gabriel.

Identyfying victims a grueling task

Every corpse gets a number, but not all will get a name.

Well, concerned, we know he will do a good job. I'm so glad he is in charge.

Five Days with Katrina - Alvaro, 9/1/05

PROLOGUE: On Sunday August 28 I woke up at 5 in the morning to go to my morning job at the Chateu Sonesta Hotel. The night before, we had been warned that Hurricane Katrina was preying her eyes upon us. In the history of New Orleans, there has NEVER been a direct hit by a hurricane. In everyone's mind, this hurricane would follow the same path that hundreds of past storms had done before. However, because of the size of the storm and ferocity which it tore through South Florida, the citizens of the The Big Easy prepared themselves as best they could... this is my tale of the events...

I'm sure that they're all just about exhausted and can't be thinking clearly. It was a poor choice of words, but I'm willing to look past it.

One of the last pics:

I searched and searched for parking lots and broke into three cars. I was unsuccessful in hotwiring all of them (I mean, do ANY of YOU know how to? I mean c'mon, I was raised with a golden spoon and now I'm committing a minor felony). I was getting frustrated when I remembered a conversation Andy and I had with a friend a couple of days before evacuation. He said that he owned a series of trucks and that he would lock them up in his factory. If worst came to worse, he told us that we could do what we had to do. We walked another mile to the factory over by Calliope and Annunciation Street. The factory had been already been looted. They took power tools, hammers, etc. Two trucks lay there untouched.
