I believe I heard this morning that flags were to be lowered to half mast in remembrance of SCCJ Rehnquist per Presidential order.

He was quick enough to do that. Why didn't he order it for all the dead folks in NO?

It's like walking into a different dimension. That's just one home out of thousands and thousands. I simply can't grasp the enormity of this destruction.

I've always remembered the rabbi at the big 9/11 memorial service. He said - 3,000 people didn't die. One person died 3,000 times.

Each of those homes belonged to an individual. They sheltered all the bits and pieces that make up our own particular lives and histories.

Apparently, accoring to a risk evaluator, no one is going to want to come to live, invest, open up a business, move to, transfer to etc. to New Orleans because it will still be under sea level.

We're hearing that several large companies, including Shell Oil are moving to Lafayette--I'll wait and see on that one.

Realistically, I think New Orleans will be rebuilt but smaller, with shored up levy systems. It has been below sea level forever, and that has never stopped companies from locating there. That port is a powerful draw to industries. They'll just make sure they have their insurance paid up.

Also, I think no one will be allowed to rebuild without flood insurance. I've been reading about how low a percentage of people actually bought flood insurance! that seems terribly shortsighted in retrospect.

I know several people have wanted to donate goods instead of cash, as they can't spare the cash right now. I have some addresses and pleas from organizations that are helping the affected areas that are ready and able to use goods that can be sent, some of them are copied from other message boards so I hope that's OK to post them here. I haven't personally verified these, so I'd advise everyone before sending to maybe call the organization and verify that they are who they say they are, if you feel leery.

This may be incredibly naive on my part, but don't you think that surely now the levee system and pumps will be improved/replaced? I can't imagine bothering to rebuild if those flood preventions aren't in place.

We have thousands of evacuees here..families in our schools,
churches, store parking lots, some just laying in yards. They have no
place to go. Entire families with small children and nothing but the
clothes on their backs. We're taking them into our homes and anywhere
we can think to house them. The Red Cross will be slow getting here
as they are tied up in Baton Rouge & New Orleans areas. In the mean
while..our community is trying to take care of these people and we're
overwhelmed as there are so many!the Relief Coordinator for our parish (like
your county) and has given me a list of items we desperately need. We
are not asking for money...only items needed for these people. If you
can help with whatever you can send we would be most grateful! Myron
& I will make sure they are distributed where needed. We have alot of
donations of soap, toothbrushes, etc so we're ok on those for now.
The following are items we have none or very little of and need
desperately:
*Baby Items: baby wipes / disposable diapers/ formula / baby
bottles / baby shampoo / baby blankets >anything for babies
*Purell or some type hand sanitizer
*Pillows / blankets
*little T-shirts ( babies to childrens sizes)
*Over the counter pain relievers (tylenol, motrin, tums, alka
seltzer, pepto bismol, band-aids, etc)
* color books / colors / board games / books (for kids in shelters)

Thanks for posting that information. I called the church & confirmed their requests. I just emailed my state chairman for the RI Junior Miss Program so that we can get some things together & send them down to Mobile. That city has been so gracious & wonderful to us.

Baylor, here in Waco, has said it would offer free schooling for any LA student already paid up in a LA college. (Considering Baylor is a +/- $15K/semester university, that is quite generous.)

I'm not a huge Baylor fan, but this is great.

Well what your saying here is totally different to what your own President said.
He stated in a press conference (in your media) that criticism being made that there isnt enough help getting into N.O because everything is in Iraq is totally INCORRECT.

He stated Iraqs (budget/people/supplies etc etc) is totally seperate to your countries plan for disasters wether it be natural or terrorists etc etc.
He actually held up his hand when he was describing it (so Iraq was 1 hand your country the other hand). Iraq is not interferring with your governments response to Katrina and thats what your Pres said!

I watched his speach on tv and that was my yesterday. I cant remember what station it was of yours. Our cable is showing nearly 24 hour coverage on one channel and it is covering all your networks so its getting very confusing (what channels what).

Believe it or not i didnt post just to sledge America, i posted because i truelly believe (as well as many others) the people YOUR people have been let down by your government.

Oh and please remember that after the Tsunami your government criticised many of those countries for BADLY MANAGED PLANS for NATURAL DISASTERS and also Australia was told by your government that we need to step up and manage the Pacific/Asian region better. Australias popualtion is 20 million!

I will also try and find a transcript on that tv interview that your Pres did.

That is absolutely correct. It would be foolish to do so and given the short amount of funds....why would you risk it? There are other areas to invest in but respect the French Quarter and the historical aspects but don't have thousands living there to be exterminated once again.The Mississippi River runs a long way...ports can be everywhere. Just trying to be practical but loving New Orleans at the same time.
