Australian war widow Daphne Dunne - who kissed and cuddled Prince Harry during his royal visits - has died aged 99 just days after receiving a birthday card from the Duke of Sussex and Meghan Markle.

Prince Harry's most devoted Australian fan was delighted when she received a birthday card from him in hospital last week.

War widow Daphne Dunne, who turned 99 last week, is known for kissing the Duke of Sussex when he visits Sydney on royal tours.

In 2018 she met Prince Harry's new wife Meghan Markle outside the Sydney Opera House.

Just days ago, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex sent the war widow a letter congratulating her on her milestone.

“Dear Daphne, my wife and I send our warmest wishes to you on the occasion of your 99th birthday on Friday,” the royal wrote to his well-known devotee.

“We hope you have a wonderful celebration surrounded by family and friends and that you’ve managed to escape hospital!

“Congratulations on reaching this important and impressive milestone before your centenary year next year.

It was signed simply “Harry and Meghan”.


Daphne Dunne had been in hospital suffering from pneumonia for two months when she passed away on Monday.

Ms Dunne called herself Prince Harry’s “biggest fan” when he visited Australia. On several occasions the Prince would stop to chat to his elderly supporter, crouching down to reach Ms Dunne who was in a wheelchair.

I don’t really understand it to be honest I have never bought anything because of a celebrity or public figure wore it. I think it’s better to have your own style and buy what you personally like. I don’t want to look like someone else. What looks great on a Duchess might not look great on you is my view.

I've given up trying to figure out when the baby is due I read an article yesterday that suggested late April or early May. Meghan's looked like she's ready to pop for weeks!

Here are some hints that I recall:

- Meghan and Harry announced that they were expecting at Princess Eugenie's wedding on October 12, 2018. Media reports indicated that Meghan had already had 12 week scans.

- On Christmas, Meghan told fans, "We're nearly there!" I took this to mean that she was entering third trimester.

- On or around February 12, George Clooney said that Meghan was seven months pregnant.

Shortly after Meghan Markle and Prince Harry launched their official Instagram account, @sussexroyal, on Tuesday, the Kensington Palace Twitter and Instagram accounts changed their profiles to center around Kate Middleton and Prince William.

Both pages previously featured a profile photo of Meghan, Harry, Kate and William together at their first appearance as a foursome at the first annual Royal Foundation Forum in February 2018. Following today’s announcement of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s new Instagram, the Kensington Royal profile images were changed to a photo of the Cambridge family. The casual snap, featuring Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and Prince Louis, who turns 1 this month, was used as the family’s Christmas card this past year.
