Um... a "highly materialistic and mercenary approach in promoting connections and status to make a buck" has been quite literally the modus operandi of the British monarchy and aristocracy since the Plantagenets. Queen Elizabeth I famously refused to marry in order to manipulate monarchs and rulers around the world with the fanciful promise of marrying her. There are entire libraries of books written about strategic marriages and leveraging power and wealth for the promise of greater power and wealth.

This thread is getting into absurd revisionist history.

Yes, if you re-read my post, you'll see that I referenced past history of drama and power politics in the royal family. Like most others, I've read the books, seen the movies and documentaries. If you re-read my post, you'll also note my disappointment is that the "celebrity" -driven disruption is coming from the US. Kind of embarrassing for us.
