What I find saddest about this whole mess... Remember all the early talk about H&M spending a few years in Africa? No question that is what H wanted to do, and I'm guessing he believed she was on board with it. Now Africa has turned into Canada, and I think his life is going to be very, very different than he expected.

I don't think MM will ever set foot in England again.

MOO
Chelsey Davy goes to Africa quite a lot to see her family and MM does not like his ex gfs... JMO

Let's say they are worth $30M. Does anyone have a conservative estimate of what kind of income that would give them every year?

IIRC, the historical average rate of return in the stock market is 10%. If we take that as a high estimate, $3 million per year. Before taxes, so effectively $1.5 million after taxes. Nowhere near enough to support the kind of lifestyle they've been living.

I wonder if their recent trip to Africa was for MM to check it out & she decided it wasn’t for her/them. Iirc from the time they wed it was expected they would move to Africa. Could be the absence of press made her uneasy. Moo

@Gardenista pure speculation but I bet PH has a portfolio heavy with emerging market funds & makes a handsome profit. Again, moo

We're back, wahey long may it last!

Was dying to discuss with fellow royal watchers if anyone else had noticed just how ragged Harry's cuticles looked when he was doing the rugby draw last Thursday, he must be a biter and it must have been an anxious week for him

Thought the speech he gave was interesting maybe a bit too much about himself and Meghan and not enough about what the charity has been doing, maybe a press release/instagram before the event would have been better so the focus could have been on the charity.

This line really stood out to me "Finally, the second son of Diana got hitched", I thought it was really interesting that he described himself in that manner (surely its more remarkable that hes the 2nd son of the next King) but also hes so well known in his own right, I don't think anyone would really describe him as Diana's 2nd son.

I'm disappointed that it seems like they're still going to take taxpayer money for security.

I think it would have been a great PR opportunity for William/Charles to go to the Sentebale event to show their support. I hope its all patched up in private or at least getting there

Whatever about that, the Prince Andrew and the Queen outing this morning was terrible. I get not casting out your son but I hope they don't think that Harry's departure means that Andrew should be doing events again.

but I think they will enjoy perks & privileges, on a different level, the kind MM desires. Glitz & glamour of Showbiz. I think she much prefers to be photographed with stars rather than the homeless. I never felt MM to be sincere, everything seemed like a photo op. Even her first outing with QE, she intimated they were very close & sharing secrets. At that point I’m guessing QE vaguely knew her. Moo

Excellent assessment of the situation! That’s the way I see it as well ...

is he fidgeting with his wedding ring? Lol. I’m sure a body language expert will have a theory. Good catch on the cuticles. Poor lad, I think he must be a wreck.

Their future business endeavors will require them to be out promoting themselves frequently.
The netflix deal thats been mooted I assume would require the whole press tour we see movie stars go on like late night talk shows, press conferences, press junkets etc.

I think H earns much more, only bc I have friends that won Powerball, after taxes they got appx $65 mil. They spent very little, investing in the markets. With such a large holding the financial institutions are working & watching their money 24/7, always shifting into new funds, etc. plus, some people have a bit of an edge......Jmo

MM would find that heavenly.
She seems to want the world at large to like & want more of her but goes about it wrong, imo. she’s easy to dislike as far as I’m concerned.
Wonder if she thought Kate might be her bestie, similar to JM? Of course Kate is poised & conducts herself quite differently. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Kate complain.....trying to recall. Moo

She has been there a few times, even before she met PH, but IMO that was more for a photo opportunity or to add to her resume.

PH statement: no other option and he feels great sadness.

OMG, should we shed a tear? There sure were options. Suck it up. You were born a royal and trained to be one. Don’t see PW and Kate whining. Instead, they are composed and, yes, royal.

PH: ... and, what do you expect to gain by moving to Canada?

Harry has made a fool of himself to the whole world. He looked horrible giving the speech. He could have cleaned himself up some.

Such a mess. I do hope that if H and M are still together, that H can adjust to the new life style in a new country away from everything he has ever known. He sounded a bit whiny to me in that speech. I don't have much respect left for him.

What happened to Africa, why Canada??? Why not the Bahamas??
Why Canada? I have never been to Canada but there is something in Canada for M.

I thought they both wanted to go to Africa.

Right but I thought the last trip was more to determine if she liked it. Idk

Exactly. This is the Internet age. Anything they do in Canada will be in the DM in minutes. Or People, National Enquirer....
As far as living under intense scrutiny- this is the same PH that was caught underage drinking, smoking pot, naked in Las Vegas and he managed to cope with 24/7 coverage after those events. I'm sure DM and Piers Morgan's coverage and criticism should have been water off a duck's back for him. The difference is MM took umbrage when she found out the British Press took a delight in exposing her for the hypocrite she is.

I’ll say it again, I fear we will wake to tragic headlines one day.......
He absolutely looked unkempt. He’s probably sleeping little, so many things to do, people to see & places to go before his big move.

For big returns, you have to invest aggressively, which means higher risk, which means some of those big returns will be offset by losses. It would be very, very unusual to consistently beat the market.

If these reports are correct, the money is invested fairly conservatively, and it's through a trust, so he doesn't really have control over it...

Since age 21, Harry and William have also been receiving a $450,000 a year investment profit from Princess Diana's estate, which they pay taxes on to the UK government.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle plan to become 'financially independent,' but they're already worth about $30 million — and none of that money belongs to the crown

Both Prince William and Prince Harry received a $10 million inheritance from the state of their mother after her death. Reportedly, the money comes in the form of a trust that pays each about $450,000 annually, starting out at age 25 (Harry is 35 years-old right now.)

I think the $450k sounds low, but the trust may specify how the money is to be invested or may have a limit on how much can be paid out annually. No doubt the princess and her financial advisors never anticipated Harry actually living off his inheritance so they may have designed the trust to provide for future generations.

They can't live in Africa b/c the juxtaposition of their lifestyle with that of the citizenry makes them look ....um...bad. She said as much in the Africa documentary. She's not wrong.
