I think you're absolutely right about that. The candle theory imo is trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. It doesn't work.

I've often thought that the wax could have been the result of some school project. Did you ever shave crayons onto wax paper and then fold and iron it to create a "stained glass window" effect? Maybe it wasn't candles at all but crayon wax on the shirt as a result of a school project or experiment. Oh, well, it's a possibility, right?

ETA: Just thought of another possibility. Remember those little wax "bottles" that contained something sweet? Maybe it was from one of those. Just throwing that out as another possibility.
