This poor man, groomed for sex in his workplace. Unable to speak out. Held submissive under financial threat. Unable to tell his marriage guidance counsellor or his wife of his living hell. A little bit of vomit crept up my throat.

11:00am: Mr Baden-Clay said his wife often wrote affirmations in her journal.

"She would often write 'I'm not depressed, I'm not depressed'," Mr Baden-Clay said.

"But as the pressures, if you like, of family life, growing a business and raising three children, I felt that if she kept telling herself that she wasn't depressed ... then I had more of an expectation that she was able to do more when I wasn't around and we could have more of a relationship.

"Because as it was we were almost living separate lives. When we were together she would go to bed ... and when we were apart she would look after the children and do everything else."
