"The devil is beating his wife": Dialect maps document U.S.'s many linguistic divides

I once had a boss who was even more suthun than me (if there is such a thing). We were working on a project once, and I needed some things out of my desk. Since my hands were full at the time, I asked the boss, "Would you look in my drawers and..." That's as far as I got. He bowed up (ya'll do know what that means, don't ya?) and said in a very indignant tone, "Why my_tee_mouse! I most assuredly will NOT look in your draws!" When I realized what he thought I was asking, well...:blushing:

Oh I missed so much fun on this thread!

Iced tea unsweetened please but give me a packet of sugar as I will pour a few grains in my tea. If I can taste the least bit of sweet, tea is too sweet. Same with hot tea.

Okay I call, still to this day, a refrigerator an ice box. And I've never owned an ice box or really seen one in person. Why I don't know.

Bathroom even if it is just a powder room...and hey why call it a powder room? Anyone ever find any powder in it?

I grill and barbecue. Doesn't matter if the tangy tomatoey sauce is on the meat, it's grilling and barbecue to me.

I can sit on a sofa or couch, a davenport to me is an expensive couch.

By the way....need some advice on starting a thread. Doing a semi kitchen remodel and I am just overwhelmed with the choices for counter tops. Where do I start a thread on kitchen counter top remodeling? Includes sink, faucet and garbage disposal, but keeping my cabinets.

By the way...most folks I know drink "ice tea," not "iced tea." Guess that "d" is too much work! lol

I am thinking the jury room or the parking lot is where the renovations thread belongs. I know there is a gardening thread in the jury room and other home related threads such as cooking etc I believe are located in the jury room. So that is where you can start it I think.

Go to that section of the forum, look to the top left of those threads and you will see a button called "new thread" click it and you are on your way to starting a thread ShowMe :)

Fun thread!
When I moved from CA to OH there were a few things that tricked me up.
"In the berm" or "look out for the berm" as the shoulder at the side of the road. "Brats" are pretty much any grilled sausage. They did NOT have "tri tip" or "Santa Maria cut" beef. Also, most people there tended to say "going to the grocery" instead of "going to the store or market".

The BEST word that no one knows unless they lived in SoCal is a Sigalert or SigAlert (a horrible traffic jam named after Sig, a long dead reporter).

my gramma would say "It'll all come out in the warsh"

I don't regularly say warsh but sometimes I throw it out just as a nod to gramma

Many Virginians and North Carolinians say WARSH! Lol. Warsh the car, the dishes and the dog! :stormingmad:

Tea, I sweeten with Stevia. My grandma used 2 cups of sugar for a gallon of tea!mp :scared:

Grandma had some good sayings. I remember my grandma saying that also.

When my husband trips I say "Smooth move exlax"

I don't think that's regional though. It think that's a my generation thing. When I see a cute guy I say "Yowsa" pretty sure that's generational too.

Around here it was either that or, "Great play Shakespeare, what do you do for an encore?"

This is a fun read. Now I will go nuts trying to remember what I used to call the shoes we wore in gym and with our jeans or shorts when not in school. I don't remember that anyone wore .. well, sneakers .. in school. Just for PE. Girls, that is. No, I think maybe the boys did wear them in school.

Heck. That was so long ago, now I feel bad that I can't remember. :(

I'm talking the 50's. Aargh! Early 50's.

Was it PF Flyers?

I have a couch but it's also a sofa sleeper. My mother had a davenport.

Sometimes our supper is a sub...a grinder is crumbled hamburger in a hamburger bun w/condiments.

I go to the store or to the grocery store and use a shopping cart. I might call it a basket if I'm going to Target and using a plastic one on wheels.

When I was a kid and walked home from school we stopped at the crick to catch tadpoles or frogs.

Some of my family lives in NC so I might be fixin' to do something. I do know what "Bless his/her heart means"~!~ And I've used it numerous times. I often use y'all...or ya'll. Now I suppose I have to think about which one to use~!

A stool is something I stand on to reach a high shelf, or what I sit on in the bathroom. A stand is something I set something on probably for display like a plant. Or beside the bed for a lamp.

My refrigerator is called a frig but I do remember my grandmother had an ice box and got ice deliveries. Ooops, dated myself. :blushing:

I would never brush my teeth in a lavatory...Eeeewwww. :floorlaugh:

bbm: Yeah ... and then you "rinch" off the soap.

Coming from NYC, moving to the midwest and hearing y'all was something else. Among other things. :)

Where is the map for
Ambu-LANCE vs ambulance

or

PO-lice vs. police?

I would normally consider those north vs south, but up here in NE Ohio, it is more city vs suburbs.

BBM: That's the one I was looking for! The first time someone called an end table a "stand," I thought, "Wuh?"

The other use of the word stool I was looking for is toilet. For me, stool is what you deposit in the toilet!

As for "lavatory," now I wonder what the heck you envision when you say that? Do you think I'm brushing my teeth in the potty?! :floorlaugh:
