WASHINGTON (AP) — Pentagon: US airstrike targets Islamic State in Afghanistan in retaliation for deadly Kabul airport attack.

@OrenCNN

The US military says it has killed an ISIS-K planner with a drone strike. President Joe Biden vowed to strike ISIS-K, and US Central Command says he has, less than 36 hours after the terrorist attack that killed 13 US troops and scores of Afghan civilians.

That was fast. Hopefully it sends a message that it is that easy to prevent an uprising.

I keep seeing this claim in USA news - that the USA evacuated 100,000 people. That surprised me, so I looked into it. The USA did not evacuate 100,000 people. The USA evacuated 4500 USA citizens.

"The surge allowed the U.S. to rapidly evacuate over 100,000 people, including special visa holders, ethnic minorities, and others who faced persecution by the Taliban." (link)
Per Reuters, these are a few of the countries that evacuated far more people than the USA.

"The United States and partners have evacuated about 105,000 people since Aug. 14
...

Washington has so far evacuated 4,500 U.S. citizens and their families

Canada had evacuated or facilitated the evacuation of around 3,700 Canadian and Afghan citizens.

Britain has evacuated more than 13,700 British nationals and Afghans

German military has evacuated 5,347 people, including more than 4,100 Afghans.

100 French nationals and more than 2,500 Afghans had reached French soil after being evacuated

Italy said that by Aug. 26, 4,832 Afghans had been brought out of Afghanistan

Dutch government said on Thursday it had evacuated 2,500 people from Afghanistan since Aug. 15

Qatar said on Thursday it had so far helped evacuate more than 40,000 people to Doha

UAE said on Thursday it had helped evacuate 36,500 people to date"
Factbox: Evacuations from Afghanistan by country

Very good catch, and an important reminder to look past the soundbites and headlines. We need to recognize and be thankful for the efforts of each ally.

Yes, there was a question about it today that got answered. Not sure if we're making them get vaccinated but they get tested. I saw that out of 900 processed at one location 11 tested positive. I don't know if that's good or bad in terms of what we were expecting. And Covid is an issue because:

Just 0.58% of Afghanistan's population is fully vaccinated, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

The U.S. Has Set Up A Mass Vaccination Site For Afghans Arriving In Virginia

Agree.

Will they need the Covid vaccine as well? I'm serious.

So then why is WaPo reporting that 8600 Afghan refugees arrived at dulles two days ago?

And the billions all the western allies hold. It's not like Afghan money was in Afghan banks. Whatever was designated "theirs" was in bank accounts in highly regulated institutions. So there's considerable leverage over them and the Taliban are going to need money to operate the country. Just math really. And I'm hoping that's how we can, in some small way, keep an eye on the girls & women. They are really counting on us especially. And I do feel obligation there. At least morally.

I find the plight of these Afghan girls so compelling. These girls never knew the Taliban, grew up under US/Afghan control and were as western as you can be in Afghanistan. And I feel like we have essentially, well, trafficked them to the Taliban. I'm just really horrified, angry &/or sad given the day. But I'm definitely trying to do what I can to make sure we exert American and international pressure to at least buy these girls some kind of safety in some part of Kabul.

The Best Friends Group said Afghanistan can’t go back in time to burqas and women sealed away from modern society. And as the Afghan security forces lose more villages and cities to the Taliban, Zarghoona’s Class of 2021 and their mentors consider them one of the last and best hopes for the future. These girls are very talented, skillful, wise and smart,” their principal, Nasrin Noorzai, said. “Young boys are fleeing the country. But girls remain.

NO NO NO....they want the Billions in aid.

3 days early. Fantastic

I was hoping they'd actually be out well in advance. And I figured security would require it. And I just want it to end.

I was being sarcastic. Sorry I didn't make that clear. Three less days to get US citizens and other westerners out.

I think they should all of eligible age be vaccinated. <modsnip: Leave American immigration policy out of the discussion.>
Not doing so is dangerous and downright crazy in my opinion. I'm very tired of being at the mercy of this horrible virus and of our residents dying.

Don't know. The article is from August 27, 2021. Perhaps the stats were as up to date as possible ... at the time of publication it was accurate?

Regardless, 100,000 evacuations is not an USA achievement, it is something many countries achieved together. The USA media should emphasize factual truth.

My point was that more refugees (twice as many, roughly) are reported to have arrived at Dulles two days ago, than your link from today. Trust me. I'm not praising the US on this.

I'm so happy that 105k, plus, have been escorted out of there!

I never want to see our states divided due to any terrorists.

Ever!

Last UK flights leave Kabul TODAY | Daily Mail Online

The last British flights will leave Kabul today, leaving up to 150 Britons and more than 1,000 Afghans behind as time ticks down to the Tuesday withdrawal deadline.

Gen. Sir Nick Carter said on Saturday: 'We haven't been able to take everyone out and that is heartbreaking. We think that we've got most of the Afghans but I think there will be high hundreds who won't have come out ... and something has prevented them from coming, rather than any processing problem from our perspective.'

He warned the withdrawal was entering its most dangerous phase and said 'we should be holding our breath and thinking really hard of that last aeroplane.'
