The Plaid Blanket

  • #21
Hmmm, now that you say that, I can see where it could be a pillow or pillow case. But it looks like there might be a red throw pillow underneath what I'm thinking is the blanket, so maybe that explains the sort of rectangular, puffed appearance suggestive of a pillow. The colors and the rough look of the material (and the fact that it's plaid and CA said there was a red plaid blanket missing from the trunk) make me think that this could be 'the' blanket.

I agree with you Sarah - looks to me like a blanket over a pillow. The pillow just happens to be red and could explain why the red is not listed as wool (correct?) That blanket could have been holding the fibers from other items, such as this throw pillow, or bed pillow.

Yes, but I don't think it was left there ultimately, because I would think that after this amount of time, one of the roommates would have discovered it and turned it over. I am sure they went through all of their stuff, Amy, Ricardo, JP, etc.
Could have been overlooked at one of their places, but usually people their age/roommates don't have a lot of possessions, and they know what is theirs.
If KC got rid of the blanket, why did she dispose of it seperately from the other items?

I didn't say it was left there?
I can see why it would be disposed of elsewhere - it would have been messy from decomp and if Caylee were laying on it in the trunk - I can see it being gotten rid of at any point between her death and disposal in the woods. When she was placed in the bags for example. Could have been tossed on the ground where the dogs hit even and tossed out after KC bagged baby Caylee.

Given:
1) the potential relationship this photo establishes between the plaid blanket, the "Big Trouble..." tshirt and Caylee staying the night away from home (see date & times of the photos)
2) The blanket in the pic fitting Cindy's description reasonbably well
3) The plaid blanket from the trunk being unaccounted for per Cindy

IMHO it is reasonable to conclude the item in the pic IS the plaid blanket for the purposes of sleuthing further. :twocents:

Nice work

Some thoughts...

A) whether or not the blanket was in contact with Caylee's body at the time of death, if it was in the trunk it would've required disposal simply due to the odor it absorbed

B)More likely, IMHO, the blanket was used to cover/conceal Caylee's body in the trunk, hence it would,ve been directly contaminated with decomp and hair.

C) IMHO, handling the body by handling it in the blanket (vs. directly) would've been more palateable

D) IMHO, the plaid blanket would've been too bulky to fit inside the bags that the body was transferred into, hence, it had to be separated during the transfer process

E) It seems reasonable to speculate that the plaid blanket would've been transferred into a separate plastic trash bag for disposal.

F) Perhaps Casey's hands were indirectly contaminated with the fatty acids via handling the blanket, hence wiping them on the paper towels and transferring fibers to them in the process would explain that evidence.

G) Perhaps Casey expected the odor in the car to dissipate once the body was gone (see JWG's timeline of the odor in the car) as one explanation for why the plaid blanket was not found @ the disposal site. IOW, either being lazy, hurried, or planning to launder the plaid blanket later, it stayed in the trunk when the body was tossed 6/19-20. And, perhaps it was the plaid blanket in a plastic bag that Casey tossed on the morning of 6/27 when she texted Amy that morning about having gotten rid of the odor problem just before the Pontiac ran outta gas @ Amscott. If it were still in the trunk 6/27 in a plastic bag it would've been the perfect means for Casey to think she'd solved the problem by tossing it...simple & easy. And it would've given her reason to believe she'd solved the problem because she would have a new reason to think more time was needed for the odor to dissipate...masking the need to focus on the stain on the trunk mat.

Soooo...where's the blanket? :waitasec: You might consider visiting the 6/27 ping thread for some ideas. ;)

IMHO it would be worthwhile to try to locate the blanket commercially in order to determine if its fibers are candidates for a match. The OSU and/or Target angles are great ideas, IMHO.

After looking at the color photo it looks like a pillow with a pillowcase and not a blanket.

I agree... it looks like a pillow in a pillow sham to me.

So think stadium blankets, hats, etc -- besides shirts can anyone think of any other pics with Ohio State gear?

I can definitely think of one. I [ame="http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4425795&postcount=81"]posted this photo[/ame] a while back in the "Coincidence Or Not?" thread:

I was told by another WS'er that the hat to the far right is an OSU hat.

Q104

* Found apart from the skull, but in the vicinity of the letters of the “Big Trouble…” t-shirt
• Hair: Caucasian fringe hairs, hair fragments, very fine, light brown ONLY piece of duct tape found containing no head hair (per FBI, pg. 565, ¶4)
• Size: ~8.5”x2”
• Fibers: blue cotton, red cotton, off-white (d), black (d) (mostly opaque), grey-brown (d), blue (d) ≠ Q23-Q25
• Photo pgs. 1243, 1244 & 1245; info p. 565, 752

ALL info relates back to the pdf linked below:

http://www.wftv.com/pdf/21252257/detail.html

Are these the fibers we're trying to match?

The ohio buckeyes plaid blanket from sears is made from cotton.

RE: pics

FWIW...there are at least 2 other OSU pics...one of Casey in a red OSU jersey and one of Caylee in an OSU shirt IIRC. Not much in the background on either of those IIRC.

RE: where might the blanket have gone?

Just FWIW. IF DC knew he was looking for a bag with a plaid blanket in it...that would be one explanation for why he was rather agressive hacking @ the plastic bag with his pocket knife in the video @ the Brackenwood house. IOW...it seems unlikely he would've been so careless if he thought Caylee's remains might've been in the bag. Also, FWIW, the Brackenwood house would have been passed just prior to the time Casey sent the text to Amy (@ ~11:03AM, IIRC) per the pings. Why Casey would've chosen this location vs a dumpster doesn't make sense to me...justa thought. And, since I'm already out here :poke: on another Bond's limb  there's room to suggest Casey stuffed Caylee's clothes (the ones she would've been wearing before being changed into the "Big Trouble..." shirt for the night...the ones she would've been referring to IF she uttered the comment about Caylee's clothes not having been found yet) in the plastic bag with the plaid blanket. DC would've been dispatched to find this bag since it would obviously strengthen the tie between Casey & the crime.

And if I wanna to hop up and down on this limb :Jumpie: just to try and see if I could break it I'd offer that the bag of plaid blanket and clothes is what Casey was after @ ~4AM on 7/2 when, IMHO, she revisited the disposal site in Tony's Jeep... and the stench necessitated her getting rid of it so quickly @ the Brackenwood house so the odor didn't permeate Tony's Jeep. What was that cracking sound? :waitasec: Did you hear that? :ouch:

Is that the 'Big Trouble' t-shirt she has on in this pic?? (with the plaid blanket that may or may not be the one from the trunk)

Are you guys sure that's a/the 'Big Trouble' t-shirt?
I zoomed to 400 percent and can make out the word 'BIG' on the top line.
Cannot make out the long word on the second line.
The third line looks like the word 'Photography' to me.

Big _____________ Photography.

It was determined that these pictures were taken months prior to June (March 2008 iirc).

I like your thinking here BJB and I think it is possible that a lazy Casey tossed the bag with the plaid blanket (and maybe Caylee's clothes) into the dumpster at the Amscott.

From Cindy's July 9th deposition:

Questioner: “Do you have a specific recollection of what else was in the blue bin?
Cindy Anthony: I know typically, when I would see Casey’s car, there would be a blanket that was–like a red-plaid blanket and then her car-seat covers. Those she could have taken out.

So I guess the blue bin was in the trunk and contained the plaid blanket...which was not there when CA looked through KC's Sunfire after the A's retrieved it from the impound?

Notice how CA doesn't answer the question. She says 'typically' and not what she actually saw in the blue bin on July 15, 2008. Imo she knows whether or not the plaid blanket was in the blue bin. Since she doesn't say 'yes' but says 'typically', I'd conclude that the blanket was not there on July 15.

If I'm not mistaken, there is another blanket* that was recovered along with the remains but was found in another area (not directly by the skull and bags).
I'm not sure we've discussed it or if it is tied to the case. Seem to recall seeing it listed on the OSCO log sheet though. :waitasec:

At first I thought I was mistaken and confused a blanket with a rug that was found in lane 7. I continued looking until I came to the OSCO Letter dated January 9, 2009, to the FBI Evidence Lab that lists items being turned over (Post 339 of Official Docs thread, FBI Lab Hair Investigation Report, pdf. 140/198).

*Q110 One miscellaneous blanket (Item #32, H-60493)

Because it is listed with other items found at the end of Suburban Drive, I'm assuming the blanket was found there too.

I see what you guys are saying about it maybe being a pillow sham, but I am not convinced of that.

Look closely at this photo - the far left bottom corner edge. It appears to me that it is a blanket hanging over the arm of the couch. Probably placed over a pillow, however that couch appears to be pretty heavily 'stuffed' anyway (for lack of a better term). Further, and this may be a stretch, but it appears to me that the edge is fringed (by Caylee's leg).

--respectfully snipped; BBM

I'll join you on that limb and say that maybe...just maybe...that Missing Piece of duct tape that AZ has referenced is in that same plastic bag, hanging out with the blanket and clothes.
